  • From the Ashes
  • The Amorous Adventures of Bold Sir Hans Capon
  • Band of Bastards

According to recent player reports the game runs well on the Steam Deck.

Note that you may already have the base game in your Epic Games library as it was a freebie back in February 2020 (thanks to congo for the heads-up).

Beat me to it. Great game

    Playing it right now

This is a game I desperately wanted to get into, but could never get into. It's beautifully created, and the lore is incredible. But the action gameplay systems are just so aggressively jank that you feel like doing anything other than talking is just going to result in a spanking.

      I dunno, I won the tournament…

I can understand why you'd feel that. You start the game as a peasant with no combat training and I think the game reflects that in the combat mechanics. Once you get some experience and decent gear, combat becomes a lot easier and intuitive.

One of my fav games of all time

    • +4

Did you do all of the training with Bernard? The combat is pretty much unplayable until you unlock perfect block and master strikes.

Once you level and gear up a bit the lower level enemies feel fine to fight, but some of the stronger ones just parry every attack that isn't a master strike. And eventually you even stop feeling the motion sickness!

    • +3

Initial combat = train with Bernard + kite enemies with bow on horse as much as possible, once you looted enough corpses for top gear and your fighting skill is high enough with master strike or w/e, you're pretty unstoppable.

    • You can also mod this so the window to perfect block lasts ages and basically makes combat a cakewalk, if that's your preference

Uhhhh…I just bought on GOG a couple days ago for $12 for the Royal Edition :(

  • +1

Have tried to get into this game a couple times as I keep seeing posts eulogising about it but I just can't get past the jank. Don't get me started on the combat either, it is some of the worst I've had the misfortune of experiencing in any game. Having said that for $5 it's worth the gamble, seems like a hate it or love it kinda game and you might love it.

The problem with the game is also its point of genius - which is that you're just a regular guy being subjected to period-accurate Eastern European situations that escalate. It's a fantastic idea in principle, but I simply couldn't find my way to the fun.

    • +3

The initial skill of the character gives the impression of horribly buggy sword combat, but as you skill up it becomes much easier to play

  • how's this on the Steam Deck?

  • +1

    This was free on Epic.

You remember early 2020 like 'twas yesterday

Wow it has been that long..

Just purchased, thanks OP. Don't forget to add/install the free HD Texture Pack DLC if you have mid to high-end hardware.

Loved this game. There are a few mods to get around the boring aspects like lockpicking on Nexus

    • +1

Lockpicking I found ok imo it was just the whole saviour schnapps system that just bugged me

But yeah mods fixed that right up

  • +4

Brilliant game. I recommend playing this now, then getting amped for the sequel early next year

My tip for KCD; Make sure to train with Captain Bernard as soon as you arrive in Rattay to unlock Master Strikes.

  • +1

I know (git gud) but I used the duels-only mod that disables group combat (enemies only 1v1 you, additional enemies wait their turn to fight) and it made the game so much more enjoyable.

For anybody who has finished it already from Epic and is considering another playthrough with the DLC like I was, it looks like the DLC was all pretty poorly received, with the positive review ones sounding like the most skippable.

I tried to do a 2nd playthrough without rushing the main quest this time, to level up etc, but there's not really anything to do in the world, no optional side quests to go off and bump into like Elder Scrolls, so it only really works when rushed by the main quest and not having time to get completely OP.

    • +1

No side quests? There are loads of side quests, such as a long chain of quests that see you helping out the refugees from your home town.

Totally disagree on the DLC. While the quality is variable, A Woman's Lot and the Amorous Adventures of Sir Hans were really good. Band of Bastards was decent, but a little short.

      • +1

There is a small number, but not a viable 'go off and ignore the main quest for hours' number like Elder Scrolls. Which is fine, it's a very impressive game on a relatively small budget, it's just not quite as open ended like the big budget games are.

It's cheaper to buy the Royal Edition and then the Deliverance Collection lol - $9.85 ($5.99 + $2.86) vs just $10.46 to begin with.

There's also a free HD Voice Pack DLC available, though I'm skeptical that you'd be able to tell the difference unless the original voices are heavily compressed.
