  • Anyone know how redeeming Star wars outlaws is done? Do they email your associated ebay email with the code?

    • Any update Captain Howdy? I note we should also be able to both Star Wars & AC Shadows too. I asked their helpdesk about it and they had no idea - said they will email within 10 days.

    • I messaged eBay seller and they provided code to both! Winner!!!

    • Got both codes through from HP eBay today. Did message them a few days ago to check.

    • I have now received both codes now too. I would also suggest just contacting on the eBay purchase. It seems to be much faster.

I initially had tried through the support page on the HP site, and through their WhatApp. They created a case/ticket on their site, but there hasn't been any significant update. Contacting through eBay was basically immediate and the code given straight away.

Commenting for some information on these systems in the future. I purchased the RTX4090 version, arrived quickly, all good.

This is a very well put together PC. The OEM HP RTX4090 is installed as a structural element to the case, all components are ATX compliant, just a very nice system. Coolermaster 1200W ATX5.0 PSU, WD NVME, just nice choices there. Cable's are very neatly arranged and secured. Minimal bloatware (McAffee only), the Omen gaming app is actually kind of nice too so I'm keeping it installed for now.

A few things to note for these systems though:

    1) The CPU cooler is inadequate for running the 14700F at stock power limits and speeds. It's a tiny 92mm 2 heatpipe thing. Factor in changing that right away (I've replaced mine with an ID Cooling Sweden 226-XT 120mm. 140mm Coolers will not fit). There is room at the top of the case for an AIO watercooler too, with plenty of available motherboard headers.

    2) There are no heatsinks on the motherboard VRM's. Probably fine if running at the 65W powerlimits that are set on delivery, but a bit of a worry if running at stock speeds. $20 will get you some heatsinks on Amazon.

    3) The 1tb mechanical HDD will be the loudest component in the system and should really be disconnected. A very strange part to be in there considering you've got a 2tb WD black NVME drive… there is room for a second NVME drive on the motherboard.

    • Thanks, do you intend to run some LLM on it?
      Runs LLM ok?

      • +1

Nah just gaming, 4K120 HDR is pretty demanding.

If you were running LLM's or stuff requiring 24/7 high CPU I really don't think the 14th gen Intel's are a wise choice.

        • Ok thanks

          • @congo: You can run local LLMs without overclocking this particular CPU but not too big models because of VRAM constraints. I would suggest after year buy another motherboard with a new CPU and second hand 4090GPU to have a dual GPU build system.
Also, in the meantime you can maximize the RAM with 98gb RAM kit running at 5200MHZ CL40 or buy anything above this for future proofing. Total RAM would be 128gb, which is ok.

            • @3fornothing: Isn't the GPU VRAM more important than CPU & Ram?
Looking to run llama 3.1 70b.

              • @congo: Yes it is but running llama 3.1 70b will require a lot of quantisation. Also, having more RAM will help with ML models that generally require them.

    • +1

I also bought this and it came quickly. Also, Can you please suggest some heatsinks from VRMs for this prebuild? For the AIO watercooler, do you think 360mm can fit or 240mm needs to be fitted?

      • +2

No way to get a 360mm AIO in the front of the case, the RTX4090 is too big and would block it.

A 240mm AIO would fit up top if it's using the slimmer Corsair blocks, but you would be stuck with a 'pull' configuration which isn't ideal. The ID Cooling Sweden 226-XT I've put on there has been great, you don't want to be overclocking anyway and it handles the heat just fine. I added some nice Silverstone fans up top and to replace the cheap exhaust and temps have been great.

I bought a cheap heatsink kit off of Amazon for the VRM's, all good. Probably a bit unnecessary. I'm kind of factoring in this motherboard being the one component that will fail so in a year or so it'll need to be replaced.

        • Thank you for the input. I will have a look at the Air cooler and fans you recommended.
Would a Arctic 240mm at the top work fine in this build?

          • +2

@3fornothing: No it doesn’t fit. I have tired with Arctic iii 240. Ended up with an air cooler
            Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120

      • Not AIO but I just ordered the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120SE from Amazon for $60 to replace the current cooler. Will report back.

        • Reporting back… Phantom Spirit wayyyyyy too big and tall.

          • @TedAsso: Are the thermals good? I don't mind the size.

            • +2

@3fornothing: Sorry wasn't clear, too big to fit - have to return. The height of the Phantom is super tall, I pulled out my ruler and we are talking 0.5-1cm clearance to the case once installed. But the biggest problem is the overhang due to the double heatsink design and the fan size - it won't fit because the Kingston Fury RAMs are too tall. So I am a disappointed and will need to investigate a smaller cpu fan - AIO or aircooled. Not super urgent because I am not playing demanding games and temp have been pretty stable so far.

Playing around with the inside since I had the case open, it is pretty cramped in there due to the size of the 4090. Looks like you need to remove the GPU to replace RAM and SSD which is troublesome.

              • @TedAsso: Thank you for your input. I think a small 240 AIO cooler from the top would fit. I won't be removing my SSD but might install RAM, so that I think I will just try to put them without removing the graphics card. Let's see what happens.

                • @3fornothing: The GPU seems to block the bottom clip of the rams. I haven’t tried but do want to upgrade to 64gb (2x32) at some stage.

                  • @TedAsso: Do we need to upgrade using Kingston Fury Beast only? It's a UDIMM RAM only. Can I max it out to 128gb with 248gb RAM Stick?
The Motherboard is ArcticU on the HP website which says that we can use 4
32 gigs of RAM to max out at 128gb.

Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 fits nicely

          • @rd: Bought it yesterday and fits nicely but the fans are in the inside and can't see the fans with the RGB because at the front RAMs are big.

            • +1

@3fornothing: https://imgur.com/a/0K3Cnzi You can put the pan on top of the RAMs I think?

              • @rd: @rd, these are the peerless assassin 120s?

                  • @rd: Thanks - looking at the stats seems like the Peerless Assassin has a lower clearing (35/51mm) vs the Phantom Spirit (40/60mm) so maybe I messed up my measurement? You didn't find that the heatsink was blocking the ram? Did you have to "notch up" the fan so it is higher? Last question did you reuse the existing bracket that was on the original motherboard or did you have to use the included bracket from Thermalright?

Might have to re-investigate getting the PA or PS again.

                    • @TedAsso: I used the bracket from Thermalright. It has enough space to insert another stick. Yes I raised the first fan a bit higher. You can see from photo it is not completely flat. But only few mm I am OK with it.

Thanks for your thoughts. I also purchased the system and was impressed with it given the price. I echo your comments above re: cooling and the random inclusion of HDD. Would also add that the RAM is 5200 and I understand is by default underclocked to 4800 so this is something I would also consider upgrading.

      • +1

I think you can change the clock speed in BIOS to 5200. Need to have a look whether it voids the warranty or not.
But will definitely upgrade my RAM to 128gb for AI purposes.

        • It seems like they provide the option to 'overclock' the RAM in the Omen Gaming Hub app. Wonder if there would be any harm doing this if it's effectively underclocked by default. It reads as 4400 MT/s in this menu as default.

  • +2

Also as a PSA - I noticed last week when checking the warranty of the system that it had already started in May… I have no idea why it is set that way. There should be an option to "dispute warranty period" on the HP support page but wasn't available to me. I asked helpdesk to sort it out and they said sure it will take 3-4 days. As at this morning, my warranty is still incorrect.

    • I also had the same thing with my system. I'll have to get in contact.

If anyone is worried about the Intel 13th and 14th gen issues, HP has released their update with microcode 0x125, which is supposed to help stop/mitigate it.

It's a bit convoluted, but you have to go through Settings>Windows Update. Update everything, let it do it's thing. Once everything is updated, a new option will appear under the same section in Advanced Options>Optional Updates. There should be one called HP Inc. - Firmware -15.25.0.0. That will contain the update.

I've had mine updated for quite a few days and no problems to report.

    • Thanks Captain Howdy for highlighting this, the bio update was hard to find and I wouldn't have found it without your instruction. After the update, the computer suddenly reboot itself about 10 times… I thought I bricked it but it was fine.
