YouTube Premium Options?

My Ukrainian YT Premium account has sadly been found out. Before that I was using a yearly Indian plan until they required a local payment method.
Is there a new method/country that can be used? Is it down to crowdsourcing family plans, and if so are any people interested in joining one?

Full disclosure I would be happy to pay proper prices for YT Premium if they offered a tier that just got rid of ads! I'm not interested in their music offering or their 'exclusive' content, I just don't want ads. And since that is all the value I derive from it, paying $17 a month is more than I can justify.

Have any friends from India who still have local bank accounts? FWIW this is a good business opportunity for someone in India to charge a bit on top to set up accounts there and accept $$ payments here.

    • Got an indian friend who has cards but they all require 2FA via SMS and he doesn't have an indian number currently. Will check in again though thanks for the reminder.

      • When your payment was rejected, any impact on your account? I'm always worried that my main gmail account will get suspended for this kind of shenanigans

        • +2

Don't use your main, gmails are disposable

@nocure: I haven't and this confirms me to not do it either. Good to hear similar opinions.

        Brave browser.

      • I did this for years on firefox but over the past 6 months youtube became so slow to load or just wouldnt load videos at all with my ad blocker pro activated. So I had to turn it off for youtube sadly. They are trying everything to force you over to chrome.

What about watching youtube on tv?

I use the youtube app, unless there's another app that does the same thing, but ad-free?

I've been paying for Indian YT Premium for the last few years without a hitch. Even updated my card when the old one expired

    • how did you go about updating your card? did you have to VPN and log into YT India again or just update it from AU YT?

      • +5

        Update from Au TY

        Add a backup payment method
Then switch from primary to the backup (and delete old primary if necessary)

Same. No issues… Though we're told there is a price rise in October.

  • My Ukrainian YT Premium account has sadly been found out.

What happened? Did YT ban your account or something? I moved from India to Ukraine last year and have been fine.

    • +3

Received an email along the lines of 'we believe the country your Youtube account is based in is not accurate, premium will end after this date'.
When the date arrived, access ended!

      • Did you subscribe through iOS in-app or direct with Google?

    "I just don't want ads."

    Adblock plus
    Ublock Origin
    Ghostery
    SmartTube+
    etc

    • +11

      On your phone:
      Install firefox
      Add Ublock extension
      Uninstall Youtube app
Now links to youtube open in phone's browser, which blocks ads. No payment, VPNs or further effort required.

      • -1

You can't uninstall the youtube app. It keeps sitting there

        • Android or iPhone? You absolutely can uninstall it on a normal phone you have full control of. It's pre-installed but not essential.

        • You can disable it in android. I have previous as I use revanced

        Sorry for your loss.

      • +3

TV has a HDMI port, you don't have to run Tizen unless you want to

      • iOS you can sideload YTLitePlus via AltStore, Sidestore, Sideloadly…

        • It's best to keep this to yourself…

      • Brave browser on iOS for YouTube.

My Indian YT is still working.

Nice, mine stopped working when my card expired and when it asked for a new card it had to be an indian one.

    • Lol do you get indian music recommendations? Some are pretty catchy!

I'm using Philippines - $10 for a family plan per month, just went up from $6. No issues.

    • What do you need to sign up for a phlipines account?

      • Just a VPN - I went with Philippines after trying Turkish signup kept rejecting my card. No issues using normal Australian card in the Philippines though.

  • I'm in India but have a plan in place in case I cannot remain in India, which I'm afraid will happen soon. Multiple options depending on your requirements for music or video, just search.

I got an email saying my Indian YouTube premium was going up in price. Have to click on a button to accept, do you think this is something I should be doing through a VPN?

    • +3

I did, but i doubt its needed.
It just lands on a page in the youtube music app saying agree to price change.

They already 'know' you arent in india listening or watching anyway ;)

      • Which VPN do you use for India. I set it up a year ago and need to accept.
I tried without the VPN and I got an error message saying that you card could not be linked.

I did not try to add a new card but it took be to the purchase page anyway

        • I have surfshark which has a virtual indian option
No idea if it's actually being detected by google as india though :)

      • Once I click agree. It took me to bank page for payment confirmation. Charged INR 2.00 for verification.

  • +2

I'm still using my Indian account, in fact today they sent me an email notifying me of a price increase (a whole 40 cents!)

    • How did you calculate the increase of $0.40? Per my calculations it's an annual increase of ~$26

      • +1

        129 rupee to 149 rupee

I'm with Argentina ~A$5 for the family plan.

    • Same here with no issues yet.

      • Just received an "Update your form of payment to maintain YouTube Premium access" on my Argentinian Account.. hmm will scour the forums.

        • Yep mine has gone too. Might have to try the Apple gift card method.

Look for Youtube Revanced. Its stock youtube without ads. I've been using it for years without issue. https://www.reddit.com/r/revancedapp/comments/13rqbiy/revanc….

    • +2

That link didn't help for me but it prompted me to set up revanced.

Here's the guide you need to follow to set it up:
      https://www.reddit.com/r/revancedapp/s/KgFpWq39vB

Takes about 10 minutes. Twice as long as it takes to set up stremio!

    • I just did this but the new patched version of youtube cant be found anywhere on my home screen I can only open it from within the revanced app. Any ideas?

EDIT: Disregard, I just disabled the original version of the youtube app then found the newly patched version and added it to my homescreen. All good now.

  • You now need a credit card issued in the countrty you're VPNing too.

  • Got an email today, India increasing prices to ₹299.00/month. Hope accepting the increase doesn't cause location issues.

I use YouTube alot, why wouldn't I pay for it. People have subscriptions to Netflix, Stan, Disney etc and watch one show a month

      • -2

I guess it's because I was with YouTube from Day 1 where it was always free because it contained people's home videos and fun silly videos. Those days are gone and now it's filled with crud so I'm confused what content people feel is suddenly worth paying big money for.

Mind telling me what you get out of it?

        • -5

I don’t pay for YouTube because I don’t see it as a great source for quality information. I mostly use YouTube for watching old wrestling segments. I’m not interested in the majority of amateur videos from people that have nothing better do with their time than create videos for other amateurs, who are essentially after likes and subscribes trying to make some money from it or get free stuff.

Recently I watched a few videos on YouTube from people reviewing routers and the DF64 gen 2 coffee grinder, however I wasn’t overly interested in their opinions, I really just wanted to get a better look at the product itself.

I collect 1080p Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays, and the majority of amateur YouTube reviewers of these provide inaccurate info, and are incorrect and wrong with their evaluations regarding their quality, there are far more experienced and knowledgeable people that post on the Blu-ray.com forums who don’t create YouTube videos, than there are people that review them on YouTube… And I believe it’s likely the same for many other products too, people with the highest level of expertise don’t regularly release videos on YouTube.

          • @[Deactivated]: I too like to watch reviews and products and old nostalgic or funny stuff. None of that has monetary value though and all of that was free as part of YouTube from the beginning. There has been no added value to justify the cost they ask.

@Guybrush57: It’s like $3 a month to not have ads, it’s hardly breaking the bank for some convenience.

              • @Randolph Duke: Agree. My family watch 3 hours total per day on average of you tube. So that’s 90 hours a month split over 9 devices that all address the one account. It’s worth it for the time saving of not having to watch adverts and also we download clips to watch on commutes , on the train from Newcastle to Sydney. This data saving means we have very cheap mobile plans like $10 a month per mobile so it works out much cheaper. Also we use the you tube music service as well.

          • @[Deactivated]: Super short sighted comments. I learnt heaps from youtube.

        • +3

Youtube is great for learning. For example 3d printing, electronics, Arduino etc. I don't pay either (brave browser) and watch something every day. Always learning.

          • @samcro: A friend learnt to become a professional magician through you tube clips. He now does shows in pubs, kids parties and travels to the arts festivals around Australia as a busker. So it has its usefulness.

    • +2

I follow lots of different tutorials for in-depth tech and creative topics on YouTube (2D/3D animation, Adobe CC, homelab stuff) - having ads when I'm part-way through problem solving is maddening.

  • My Samsung TV can skip ads, so I use the free version on the Samsung Youtube app

  • +4

I much prefer unofficial apps not just for ad blocking, but for features like SponsorBlock and removing useless features like "Shorts".

  • +1

Just use one of the browsers that disables YT adds

  • I haven’t paid YouTube any money for a subscription since YouTube Red when I wanted to watch Cobra Kai seasons 1 & 2 before Netflix took over as being the co-producer with Sony Pictures of the Sony owned series.

Find 5 friends/family and get the family plan then it's like $6 a month

    ReVanced is your best friend

    • The best thing to happen since Vanced

  • Argentinian plan here. No problems so far. ¡Vivo!

  • I got lucky, only got a slight price raise.

  • I paid around 20$/Year last time, when I was in India. Coming back, I m unable to renew using the same payment details.

  • Paid for YT for years until they whacked the price up to be more than other streaming services and YT doesn't even make any TV or movies, so cancelled.

Now use smart tube next. Works perfectly for $0

  • Im in Argentina, I signed up when I was on holiday there so I think technically I can argue my account is legit lol

  • Have you tried ad blockers instead and/or reVanced?
On Android TV use SmartTube or similar.

  • I use Brave browser on android, ios and desktop. Blocks ads on all sites, and particularly no ads in youtube videos.

  • My Indian YT Premium sub got shut down recently after many years, but what i did instead is got a friend to share their Google One account - it comes with YT Premium.
It works the same as office/onedrive - you can share the sub with 4 others.
If you know anyone that pays for Google one for their phone photo backups etc, check if they dont mind adding you to their sub.

    • Google one doesn't include YouTube premium?

Which country offers yt premium with Google one?

      • Hmmm maybe it doesn't come with it, but instead YT Premium is shared (if they have it) when google one is shared - probably because it uses the same family sharing feature?

        • possibly, but would mean they are subscribed to a YT premium family account.

  • Just had my Indian YT cancelled. I have enough friends/family interested in splitting a 'Family' Premium Australian account, but according to their T&S this must all be same household ala Netflix - can anyone share any experience if this is enforced / checked?

    • My Indiam youtube is shared with family across 3 household and 2 countries. I doubt it will be flagged.

  • My Argentinian account got cancelled this month.

    • UBlock Origin / Adguard Home already seem to be taking care of Mac and PC.
    • I sideloaded SmartTube to my Sony OLED Android TV.
    • I sideloaded YTLitePlus to my iPhone via AltStore.
    • Don't think there's a good solution for my Apple TV?
    • Yeah I'm also specifically looking for a solution for Apple TV, I sideloaded uYouPlus for iphone and am casting, it's worth it for sponsorblock

      • Reddit took me to Yattee which is a frontend app that runs on Invidious backend. Works well enough for searching content you know you want but doesn’t have any browsing or recommendation ability so it’s limited in that respect.

India Family membership: ₹189.00/mo changing to ₹299.00/mo email for me too. No account issues yet.
The damn email went to my Spam folder. You'd think Google can verify emails from themselves?

I’ve never paid for YT premium and never “ever” will. Would rather stop using than being forced into it in one way or other. So how so I do it?

Was using adblock until recently and now just using brave browser on pcs. On phone i dont use YT at all and on tv i just watch some vids sparingly and don’t mind the limited run if the stupid ads.

    YMMV for usage.
