  • OP, You can only order maximum of 1 Sandisk Extreme SSD 120GB 2.5 inch SATAIII Solid State Drive 550MB/s SDSSDX-120G-Q25 (SDSSDX-120G-Q25).?

    • +8

They all have limited stocks and we limit quantity per person to ensure most people can get the deal.

  • +3

I like you guys, but that doesn't mean any price you post is a bargain, for example:
both the Sandisk 240GB & 480GB, without the fancy coupon, I can get it for $176 & $369 from Umart or Msy…, the shipping cost in fact kills the 480GB deal !

    • still need to drive to the store and line up

      • +3

line up? hardly. I never see any lines at my msy. Plus you got local warranty should something go wrong. I hate sending something by post and paying for post costs and waiting weeks for a replacement.

      • +1

I live within 2km of either stores, whats the difference lineup or waiting days for your item to arrive… ?, oh wait I know…

      Hi Elijah,

Thanks for your support. We try to offer the best possible deal to everyone, even during this ultra competitive period of time. New increased cost of SSDs and the never decreased Australia Post freight charges did make us look slightly higher than retails for some that can easily access these stores However, many others on ozbargain may not have that previllege and we believe we provide the best deal for them..

      • +1

        how about pickup? Please? :D

        • Sorry…we do not offer pick up.

        • +8

you need a good pickup line first.

        • i know.

      • +1

They have physical stores, employees and other overheads to worry about and still provide an all inclusive cheaper price.

        • I don't know anything about this vendor, but MSY and Umart both have strong Chinese ties which they leverage to ship things direct a lot of the time. They operate on thin margins and lots of bulk. I don't hold it against a vendor if they can't match the price of these companies (although it does make it not such a bargain for the more informed among us).

          So ? lol

Why do you have to be more informed, to realize its more expensive… ? lol

        • How much for an N40L?
That's the deal we're here for.

MSY have the best price on every product that every other store sells? Nope. And even if/when they almost did, their business model, despite, became chaos. huge slow queues, phones endlessly ringing out, clueless stock control, repeated "no have" soup Nazi customer service. I gave up on them years ago. After all the crap, they never had what I wanted, what they advertised, what was the cheapest… And by a few bucks per item. Now I go for one item a month, get the same crap, and wonder why I bother at all.

  • OP, do you sell the N40L package with 4gb ram and 2x500gb hard drives + SBS Essentials, and if so what is your best price?

    • Will consider bring more options such as SBS essentials by next year. For the moment, can't do any package deals, but please keep in mind all other things you order together do not get charged extra shipping, until you added so many that it goes over the cubic size.

    • Hah Hah, just picked up this package (with SBS Essentials 2011) for $293 off ebay. Was a one off, box opened but unused. Bargain.

Ordered a laptop from their last weekend sale, extremely helpful staff that answered all my queries within a few hours. Placed the order and received within only a few days to Brisbane! Perfect timing for a birthday! Highly recommend them :)

  • +4

hmm any chance of a deal on the N40L without the 250gb HDD?

    • Lol… Not in a million years.

  • Still no N40L replacement guys, just your friendly reminder, sigh :(
I have 3, I've even got HP responding to me now, my poor loungeroom PC (using it right now!) needs some more beef.

  • Has anyone got their N40L correctly working with wake-on-lan and powering down when not utilized?

I would like to use an Apple TV v1 front-end with XBMC, and somehow get XBMC to send the magic packet to wake the N40L when a movie/photo/etc is displayed, and ideally remotely shut down the N40L instance after a period of xbmc inactivity. Anyone doing anything like this?

    • The best you can do is to spin down the drives,
if you feel creative install a picopsu,
I have mine with the dives span down at just under 20w with 3 HDDS and a GTX220,

I agree with some user comments above. The shipping costs are fluctuated and literally pathetic. There is no way it costs that much send. The countdown begins and a lot more sales will be on due to Christmas.

  • lookiing at their site found asus ultrabook X202E just $499 touchscreen, too bad no stock. how could this one so cheap?

    • Celeron 847 and only 2GB RAM? F202E is $488 at TheGoodGuys with touch screen as well, and I am not too sure the difference between that and X202E.

Edit: Oh, and $477 from Bing Lee.

      • thanks SC
        found this:
The VivoBook X202E is also known as the VivoBook Q200E (at Best Buy), the S200E, and F202E in international markets. I have no clue why Asus decided to release the same laptop with so many different names,

    another samsung 830 deal please!

  • Ok, So im thinking of getting one with the 240GB SSD and a RAM upgrade. So can someone link me to a compatible RAM module on the shoppingexpress site. I'm guessing it has 1 x 2GB module installed so I'd like to just get 1 x 4GB to make a total 6GB. Will this work well?

I'm going to use it with the 2 x 4TB HDDs that were on OzBargain last week, as well as a low profile graphics card and a USB3.0 card, and then use it as a NAS and a HTPC running either windows 8 or windows server 2012. Can you knowledgable ozbargaineers tell me if this is going to work well? and would windows 8 be fine or would the win server 2012 be better? I've got no experience with Win Server OSes but I can learn. Comments? and link to the ram plzz

    Thanks guys :)

    • The RAM that comes with the microserver is ECC RAM (PC3-10600E<-Note the "E"). The machine runs fine with non-ECC Ram, but I believe that you shouldn't mix the two types.
So, either plan on taking out the 2GB DIMM and replacing it with non-ECC OR buy a stick of ECC RAM to add (e.g. http://www.hardware-australia.com.au/hp-4gb-2rx8-pc310600e9-… - not necessarily the cheapest, just the first one I found).
Non-ECC RAM is cheaper but ECC RAM gives you more security if you want to ensure that data is not subject to random bit-flips. I'm using 8GB non-ECC in my N40L. Apparently you can go to 16GB despite what HP says.
      HTH

      • thanks, might just get 2 x 4GB. RAM is pretty cheap these days :)

    • If the SSD is just your OS then 120 GB SSD is plenty. You can connect it to the ODD port and if you install the custom BIOS (search for custom BIOS N40L or read older threads of the N40L for a link) the ODD SATA port functions at full speed.

You can add your 4TBs without any issue and Windows 8 works just fine.

My own setup is 5x 3TB HDDS, 120 GB SSD, Windows 8, 8 GB ECC, Radeon HD6450 Low Profile card and the machine functions as a very nice HTPC. The RAM is barely taxed (usually have 5.5 or more GB still free even when the machine is doing multiple tasks: Downloading, playing movies, server uPNP streams to tablets and phones).

Decent price on the N40L. With 4gb ram and 2x2TB drives, works out to $470 delivered - a good forty bucks cheaper than the ebays

    Add to cart!

  • Good price on the N40L considering how much it currently sells for at most other stores however not so good compared to the previous bargains posted here. Seems like this comes on special every few months.

Not as good as previous one day sale, is it possible to match/include ram bundle op?

Also which vid card is compatible with this? (Prev owner familiar with these? Need extra cable/bracket/just plug and play?)

    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/powercolor-amd-radeon-…

    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/asus-amd-radeon-hd-545…

    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/powercolor-amd-radeon-…

    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/gigabyte-amd-radeon-hd…

Or special bundle with above vid card?

    • You don't need to bundle. I got my card seperately from eBAY (HIS Radeon HD6450 which comes with the low profile brackets and is passively cooled (no fan, just heatsink). You need to get a cable to connect it to your display (HDMI, DVI, or VGA).

      • Thx for the reply, any link for the graphic card? Most ebay good/decent prices killed by shipping. I already got some HDMI cables ready :) BTW will 2tb WD green hdd work perfectly (not as boot drive)? I heard some problem with WD Green

OP/ShoppingExpress can bring back samsung 830 deal?

        • Link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HIS-HD6450-1GB-Silent-Video-Card-…

The WD Greens do work but you need to use a utility because WD had a really aggressive spin down time (I think every 5 seconds or something) and the N40L would wake it 20 times a minute because it was being used as a NAS. This ended up killing the greens in a matter of months.

You can get a utility from WD to reset the timing to something like 5 mins and the drives will work OK.

I chose instead to get WD Reds (I know they cost more) for the reason that they're designed for NAS duty and they have 3 yr warranties (WD Greens are 2 yr).

What'll likely happen is that around 3-4 yrs from now I'll replace the drives with bigger drives. Maybe the N40L is going to be replaced by the yet unannounced successor as well but main thing is to keep the 10+ TB of data going without having to get it all again.

Hopefully by then we're talking about 8 TB or 10 TB drives in the 3.5" form factor. Its only now that the 4TB are become reasonable. I have a second N40L as well which doesn't have drives yet. I'll have it serve as HTPC for the second TV reading stuff off the first via uPNP and GigE network.

    • So were none of these linked above, compatible? Or rather do none of them come with the low profile bracket?

      • according to the description the asus amd 5450 has the low profile bracket: http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/asus-amd-radeon-hd-545…

So if i get both it should work out cheaper and save on shipping :)

        • Yep, I have one of those & they certainly do come with the LP bracket.

FWIW, I've been very happy with mine running under Win7 (HTPC/media server); but if you intend to run any of the linux variants you might want to consider a Nvidia based option for a more trouble-free setup process.

  • Stupid questions:

    1. Would it be a good idea to get one of these as a storage solution for my iMac (which runs out of space and I am sick of juggling external drives). I mainly would have RAW images and a Itunes library.

    2. How do I setup this device? Would I need an external monitor for that (or could I do this somehow from my Mac?).

I am no expert in setting up servers … so not sure if this would do it for me?

    • I googled a bit … and found heaps of information. Looks like this little machine is well supported and used a lot. So I will go for it and get one :-).
As it is not coming with an OS looks like I will run Ubuntu to get this done. Looks like I need to learn a lot …

Looks like the storage for mac and windows is no problem. But will need a monitor … I found a solution but looks above my skills: http://www.conrad.id.au/2012/06/installing-linux-on-headless…

      • There's a monster thread on the N40L (500 pages+) on overclockers.com.au

Pretty much every question you can think asked and answered several times.

        • Thanks amaslam …I realized that there is a lot of information out there (thats why I responded to myself).

I also realized that my old 37 inch Sony TV could be used as a monitor … yeah … great to set it up …:-)

My fav starting out link is n40l.wikia.com . It has videos and links to other threads outside of Wikia.

I could never get through the OCAU thread, it's just too big. But it's good to read the beginning and end pages to see the links and what people are asking.

  • Bought N40L + 4gb ECC to go with my 2x 4TB Hitachis from BH Photo.
    Thanks S.EX

    • Great! Now everyone will be talking about how much they love S.EX

  • i bought my N40L from them as well. very fast shipping. and received exactly as described. excellent!

  • why is this server better than building your own pc/server?

what are people using this server for?

    • Look at the specs, then get similar in parts. This one is already built, designed for 24x7 duty, has low power usage, and is part of the server range of HP (not consumer), comes with a warranty, and if you look in the case even comes with all of the tools and screws to fully fill it with drives. There are more good reasons. There are many people who have 2,3,4 of these for various tasks. It's living room friendly (small, quiet, and can be hidden away easily).

    • I prefer this because the area where you put the in the HDD is designed to be accessible.

  • I have an old Maxtor 100 GB 2.5 USB HDD
would I be able to rip out the drive and use it as the SSD for the N40L?

    • +1

I would be surprised if you manage to turn a HDD into an SSD, but if you do manage to do so, please fill us in on the secret ;-)

      • +1

        hammer is the secret

        • HDD + hammer + beer = SSD :)

    • Discounting the smart-arse remarks you can use your 2.5 USB HDD. Usually they're SATA drives but in that small size they could be IDE as well inside. Don't forget if thats a drive you've been using for a few years it is going to conk it soon because of the mechanical life of drives is about the 5-7 yr mark.

SSD is solid state and has no moving parts. It's much faster than a mechanical drive so makes an excellent OS drive. Because the main limitation of SSD is the finite number of Read/Write cycles (it's measured in millions) it wouldn't be used for a NAS drive.

  • Bring on the Samsung ssd deal! Otherwise MSY 480gb is better priced in comparison.

  • I'm a bit late on this one but am on the market for an SSD. How's the 480gb Sandisk compared to the Samsung 830 or 840 series? Anyone have any views on this?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Does anyone has some cheap HDD (2TB or 3TB) options for the device. Shoppingexpress sells two 2TB ones (one Seagate … and one WD for under 100$ … are they any good? I have some 5 year old 750GB … might go with them first but might be too slow.

  • I am looking for a small quiet (headless) server to use for a Web application (and related services). I would like to use JBoss Application server 7 running on CentOS (RHEL) to run a couple of Java applications, a PostgreSQL database etc. I am not expecting much demand and if there is then I will upgrade hardware (or go to the cloud). I will get the SSD (and it will probably hold all the apps, database etc) and 8GB RAM(?). My question is would this server be up to the task? I worry the CPU won't be fast / capable enough but then I am not really knowledgable in these regards. Thanks for any thoughts you can share.

    • This server should work fine. It is suitable for workloads like the one you're thinking of. It even manages the newest Win2012 with Hyper-V and live movement of the VMs (no shutdown and continues to run).

I would only suggest put the database on a magnetic drive since they're are so many R/W cycles involved. But setting up the apps and OS on the SSD should be fine.

The hardware of the N40L is very standard and new OSs detect USB TV Tuner

  • Woot! Free Shipping :)

  • I just bought one of these N40L Microservers & it got delivered yesterday. I didn't get this deal though. Good hardware…

  • Any chance of a discount if we don't want the 250GB HDD? Or would it be more costly for you to remove it for resale?

  • Just ordered 1, thanks for the free shipping. Total cost $219

  • Free Shipping? So what, get everyone in at your exxy shipping prices then offer it free? Not cool.

  • Two thumbs up for the free shipping (was S15 to Perth, WA)

    S. Ex is the best :)

  • free shipping? still comes up as $9.85 for me (melbourne)…

    • Yep … How did you get free shipping? Would get one for 219 shipped … :-)

      • Last night the discount code removed the shipping charge if you prefilled your postcode :/

    couldn't resist…N40L + 4GB ECC RAM + 2x 3TB seagates = damn you ozbargain!!!

    • :-) Got nearly the same … (N40L and 2x 3TB seagates (they look like the best value there). just without the RAM (will need to upgrade later :-().

Now I rread lots about networks and setting up the little device … steep learning curve …

  • I keep getting message 3005 during paypal checkout… ???

  • Dammit. Have just considered buying one of these. A few days to late. Guess i wait for the next sale :(
