I ordered this via their eBay store a while back and the laptop was not in a great conditions, there were too many things wrong with it and had to return.

It's great price but without the eBay guarantee, I won't be ordering directly with them.

    • We have the same customer service teams that handle all sales channels. The service won't be any different, we also sell 5 times more through the main website than eBay these days.

Well the service told me it's refurbished what do you expect? We can't do much you can put an eBay request to return it.

If it wasn't eBay, not sure if I would have the backing to return it that easy

I don't think rep understood what you were trying to say lol.

          • +11

@Rick Sanchez: Well if the rep didn't get it, I don't expect their customer service to understand either lol

With eBay-Plus, if a "not as described" or faulty item is sent we don't have to deal with customer service reps that blow you off or don't respond, we can just grab a free return shipping label from ebay and send the item back for a refund, its very quick and easy..

(When I made contact for a not as described item they didn't respond until I left negative feedback, then their response said they would only give me what I paid for if I first removed the feedback… Very dodgy ethics IMO… A free eBay return was the only option… They somehow managed to get eBay to remove the honest feedback, I assume that's how they keep their negs down)

Im really considering getting a refurb however reading from above horror stories it looks like I need to reconsider specially if it's something that I will purchase for someone overseas. Brushing off the ebay neg comment is a big no no for me.

@SabreTooth23: I am not saying I haven't had good experience with them, I bought an open box laptop from them and it was as described.
However, it is when things are right, you want eBay.

yep which from memory is a breach of their ebay terms and conditions as its effectively blackmail to try and negotiate fixing the feedback to do what they legally have to do anyway, comply with ACLs. I wish there was a way of "blacklisting" sellers or naming and shaming them beyond the broken feedback systems on platforms like ebay. maybe ozbargain can start up a blacklist page for unethical sellers? :)

          • @paulojr: The Overclockers Australia forum had Vender Verdicts many years ago. It was removed because the site owner was sued by a business. The case was was unsuccessful, but it still cost a lot of money, time and stress. I doubt @scotty wants any of that hassle.

      • Could you post the deal to eBay too ?

Fair price. I've chewed through two of these now (the first in 2019, the second in 2022).

Apart from the obvious 8gb limitation, it's worth noting that once the CMOS battery dies (which at this age will surely be soon) they won't power on without mains connected, irrespective of battery health. Once powered on they will run fine on the main battery.

Can't the CMOS battery be replaced?

      • +3

Yeh, but it seems to be a bit of a fun job, you have to tear the whole thing apart:

        • Jeez what a stupid design
Very easy to accidentally damage the screen prying it off like that

          • @jp1011: It's major surgery, certainly not a job for an inexperienced 'user', dealing with all the cable connectors can be an issue, they can be fiddley…

        • I see - it's like ripping a tablet apart.
Totally different to a standard laptop. Pass on this.

  • is this the version with or with out thunderbolt 3?

    • Intel i5 8th Gen Processor

No. TB3 only on i7 model according to various sources online.

    • TB2 for the 8th Gen i5. That being said, that's plenty for 2 external monitors via a Dell WD15 or WD19 dock (which are cheap as chips nowadays)…

      Currently have a 7290 i5 into a WD15 dock working very nicely.

  • Is this the one where screen can separate and is touch? Like a MS Surface?

    • Yes

    It's 199 on eBay now
