      Both equally addictive

It's so good that Latrell can't get enough.

  • Someone please teach me how to use it.

    • +15

      Use it like salt

      More info
Use it anywhere you want a strong umami (meaty, savory, satisfying) flavor.

Burgers are really good with it, use about 1/8 -1/4 tsp per lb of beef, mixed in the meat, and still lightly salt the outside before cooking.

I like to use a touch of it in my mac & cheese too.

      • +1

        Thank you!

I use this brand. It's good stuff. Fine powder.

  • Is this a 'large crystal' or 'the same or smaller than NaCl salt' size? Thanks.

    • +2

It's larger than table salt, mostly in length, diameter's not that different, but I've never done a side by side comparison.

Won't eat MSG which is naturally occurring but can barely string a coherent sentence together.

      logic

      • -2

Why bad grammar means bad logic?

    • +1

That could be said about almost everything. We're all going to die at some point, enjoy the little things along the way.

      • -8

That is true, but this is a controversial topic, so better to avoid

        • +13

There is literally no controversy about MSG.

You're just remembering the racist BS that was spun about it back in the 80s and 90s that has been disproven time and time again.

        • There is no controversy. If you have sensitivity to MSG then it's probably best avoided. If you're everyone else it's nothing more than a flavour enhancer. There's literally no link to cancer or any other illness. It occurs naturally in a range of foods and is added to many, perhaps most, processed foods.

    • +1

This used to be very popular but later said to stop as some say could affect the bone or something. A quick Google shows it's safe to use in Australia tho along with some "ban" topics showing up. In short, it's safe at the current so.

      • -8

You are right I think. But better to be safe than sorry if they find out it later.

        • +6

You know, studies have shown that oxidation is a leading factor in cancer. You know what causes oxidation? Oxygen. You should stop breathing it too. Better to be safe than sorry!

          • +3

@freekay: Also, don't forget the highly carcinogenic molecule dihydrogen-monoxide. It literally kills everyone that touches it.

    • +7

Do you eat crisps, Pringles, cheese, aged beef, use fish sauce or soy sauce, etc.?

      • I eat cheese and fish sauce and soy sauce.

      • +1

        Flavour enhancer 621

Check out the back of a packet of Maggi 2 minute noodles.

You'd be surprised how many things use flavour enhancer 621 if you actually look.

  • “Cancer”???

But I heard that not eating enough of it can give you paranoia…

  • +2

Haiya…. nephew YoJabbaJabba missed this one.

  • +1

When i was young, many people around me said it's bad for health. So i just google as I haven't tried it for a long time, turn out it is ok as long as not too much?

    • A little goes a long way.

    • +4

Large amounts could be bad the same way large amounts of salt could be bad. The whole thing surrounding MSG is a myth based on racism in America, that unfortunately spread to most western countries.

    • +1

MSG is probably OK to consume as a food additive, similar to how sugar and salt are OK.

I guess I have heard the arguments on how we are consuming more MSG than before (similar to how we are consuming more salt than healthy amount), but I personally think that applies to any food item (i.e. sugar, salt, fat, protein, anything in food etc etc).

I even heard that it's better to use both salt and MSG, rather than to just go with just salt if your sodium intake is high (MSG adds salty flavour with less sodium intake).

    • +1

Google says MSG is no different to Salt. With salt, you can't eat too much of it because food won't taste good. With MSG, the problem is that the more you put in, the better it tastes, so people tend to over dose.

If you use MSG at the same rate as salt, it will be fine.

      • Shouldn’t MSG be 1/10th of salt?

        • The "bad" component of MSG is the Sodium, which is the same component in Salt.

          • @world2160: You're both right, you can put MSG in a salt shaker at a ratio of 10:1 (salt to MSG) or 1:1 per recommendations

  • +8

What does MSG stand for? Make Sh*t Good.

    • -1

      isn’t that a good thing?

      • -1

If your sh****t is a good thing

        • I bet it’ll even put a shine on to your username ✌️

    • Monosodium glutamate

    • You know shit isn't censored, right?

  • +3

i thought Aussie dislike MSG, how come this one running out so quick?

    • -1

Haven’t you seen the news? most of aussies are asian now apparently.

      • After visiting Melbourne and seeing that everything, buildings, signs etc are all in English and Mandarin or just Mandarin I’d actually agree with you.
I live outside of Melbourne, in Springvale and basically everything is English or English looking characters

        • Some parts of Sydney also definitely don't "look" your typical Australian, merely due to skin colour (ie not white), let alone English signs.

        • Yeah exactly… Not sure why negs the are for, I don't think I've mentioned anything that's far from what you can see everyday at least from metro areas perspective…

(p.s. - i'm from asian country as well)

    • why did I get downvote for asking a question? or maybe because I am asian.

      • Maybe cuz of your English. Also we can't tell if your Asian, it's the internet.

        • Andy Nguyen is definitely a white man.

But seriously I read his question with a Vietnamese accent and it fit so perfectly.

      • It's a good question.

    • 20 years ago, all Asian restaurants had to state that they did not add MSG. The world has changed.

      • +2

And now people buy from asian resturants and add MSG at home so it tastes like it used to, clown world.

      • "We stopped using MSG - we switched over to Chicken Powder - it's MSG but with chickens"

    • +1

Uncle Roger and Guga Foods made MSG desirable again.

Must have been a "Big MSG" media campaign to fight the state propaganda of "MSG bad"

      • I understand that basically everything contains "msg" now, except that it is labelled as something as something else due to its negative connotations.

  • +1

Here, it's salt & pepper. In Asia, it's salt & MSG.

    • You still need normal salt as well?

      • +1

Yes but not as much, balance

  • +2

Logan’s cucumber salads are helping this to sell 😆

this post is giving me a headache

  • haiyaaa out of stock already

  • ooooh good deal. just missed out on this but thanks for sharing!

  • Gimme gimme now. Drats, missed out!

  • +1

Is there still one made in Japan?

  • +1

    Good one! Missed out!

  • -2

will i get cancer after i use up this bag

    • Not sure about cacner, but if you finish this whole bag on one sitting, I would assume you would not feel "well" at the very least.

As with 500g of MSG, since MSG is naturally occuring in things that are high in umami, I assume if you like Japanese or Asian food in general, you would've had consumed that much already.

  • +1

Haiiyaa i missed out on the "Make Sh*t Good" powder!

  • I obviously do not understand how this works.
It seems to add nothing to any dish, even blind testing it seems the same.
What am I doing wrong? Doesn’t matter if it’s curry, rice, veggies…

    • Add more.

Depends on the dish, but I usually use around half a teaspoon for 4 people and it is very noticeable at that level.

It is a flavour enhancer, so adding it to bland things like rice won't do a lot.

      • I add handfuls because it doesn’t do enough.
I presumed it was a necessity for fried rice.
I add to everything and don’t notice regardless of quantity

        • Very strange. Either something is wrong with your msg, or you just can't taste it for some reason.

  • A good old bag of flavour enhancer 621.

i still have a bunch left from my last buy. Added it to a salt shaker for easy application to steaks.
