PSA. Do NOT put Shiraz into these! You were warned.

    • I was more thinking don't put your moolah (another rare varietal in this cost of living crisis) into these…

How is this better than anything similar on Aliexpress below $10? Like this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007008610818.html

Made in Germany and brand name.

How are you going to impress your guests when they finish their $500 wine and stare at the bottom of the wine glass and it's a no brand made in china glass?

oh the shame and the horror! No one will come to your parties anymore!

BTW, your link has a stem.

      • -3

Both are words. Didn't you see "Made in Germany" on Made in China items? And again, location or brand does not guarantee that it is better. Even if your point to impress by price, there are more expensive things that don't look better too. So I am not convinced that this "bargain" has any benefits in whichever direction you are looking.

I'm sorry I have to be so explicit.

They are completely different glasses though. You might not that the Riedel is worth it or makes a difference; but I dont think you can say 'how is this specialist glass any better than a generic wineglass made out of thicker glass'. if you have ever drunk from a medium level wine glass vs an Ikea wineglass you can tell the difference. Albeit, yes, both are containers that allow you to move wine from a bottle to a glass to your stomach with roughly equal efficiency.

      That's plastic for starters.

Lol to comparing proper wine glasses with plastic camping wine glasses

That's why I said "anything similar" so if you don't like that particular item you could check another one and compare.

        Which one better and why?

Why buy your fake wines glasses when you can get 100 plastic cups for cheaper?

@mandelbrot: Why buy shit glasses or cups when you can just drink from the bottle?

        • I feel negative expressions, but I see no particular answers. Thank you all for showing me that there's no objective difference.

@Ozzster: Honestly mate you need to try it to see the difference. I could say it tastes less sour, or brighter, or deeper flavour. Your taste perception is different to mine so it may not make any difference to you. We had a friend who was a skeptic and we gave him a generic glass and a Pinot noir glass. He was amazed how much difference it made.

            • @try2bhelpful: Thank you. You made me google the scientific part of this and this is something I will learn forever.

There is an ISO standard in wine testing (and ASTM-certified glassware for labs), and it specifies certain points and requirements for the glasses and ways how to use them for testing. Also, none of them are impossible to be met by the cheap few-dollar glass from Aliexpress. So, if you know what you are doing and how to do it properly - there is no requirement to brand, cost, or type of glass. There are some requirements though to the shape and other features, which are totally available in glasses on Aliexpress. Now it is proven.

Speaking of taste, it explained to - glasses cannot change the taste of a wine per se but can significantly alter our perception of it. By shape. Which totally possible to replicate in China with no measurable difference. So again, no difference.

@Ozzster: Go do what you do and I will work from experience. No probs.

                • +1

@try2bhelpful: no probs. Honestly, thank you. Not always Internet holywars can lead to something actually affecting real life. You are the first one who actually named the difference.

                  • @Ozzster: I’m a Chardonnay gal, don’t judge me, I’ve got a set of the low end Riedel Chardonnay glasses I use as my every day glasses. These aren’t very expensive and are pretty robust. I’m into the new world big buttery Chardonnays, again don’t judge me, and I think the flavour is better.

Frankly if nothing else the taster glasses are a fun piece of theatre and pretty glasses. You are making an effort for your friends. I’ve never paid full prices for Riedel glasses. The best I did was a set of tasters that cost me $70. The numpties at the Home Show put 30% off the tickets and expanded it to cover everything you booked at the show.

My suggestion to people is go along to one of the Riedel glass tasting sessions. You get to keep the set of four taster glasses at a significant discount on the set and they give you several styles of wine to try.

It is a fun party trick to try different wines in the different glasses and compare them.

We have a number of the generic Riedel taster glasses. Costco sometimes have a set of 4 as $49, last seen for $29.97. They are sold out now.
