For me casserole beef represents the best value/greatest discount. Credit to Markdown Addicts for this special. Lots of people on there have reported getting good substitutes for higher priced products.
EDIT have added Chuck and Brisket Mince 500g $12/kg as apparently if available in your area is included in the deal. This won’t show for everyone.

EDIT 2 still available in a new catalogue week as of 28/8/24

  • You should add the 500g premium mince. Personally, I think this is the best value one.

    • Mince didn’t appear in the selection for me.

    • Good for burgers, chuck and brisket

    • I’m not convinced that it’s part of the deal. It appears in the list when you click in the deal but for me it says ‘in store only’, doesn’t have a price shown when you go to the individual item it doesn’t say anything about it being on sale.

      • It does show up on mine and could add it in the cart.

It is popular so many stores sold out. Adds to the cart if in stock at your store

woolies normally put the slow cooked beef brisket on special for $10/kg - you can mince that in bulk, portion it out 500grams then vacuum seal it and freeze it for months on storage. - purchase 10-20kg at a time

Also just an indication i bought sirloin /new york / poterhouse grass fed MB4+ for $37/kg and scotch fillet grain fed 120days MB4+ for $47/kg - purchased 50kg of each.

My suggestion would be talk to your local butchers and buy in bulk - at least you know what your getting.

      • I've never seen brisket on special at Woolies for that cheap, must be dependent on store…. i've even time it when it's the day of best before and it disappears.

I wish I had that kind of storage in my freezer, but that's definitely the best way to do it.

      • With $4k worth of steak you need a backup freezer!

      • Aldi does their brisket for $10/kg from time to time, but I find the quality hit or miss. First couple of times I bought it, it was fantastic. Last time it had a giant slab of fat in the middle of it, dunno what they were doing when they cut it.

I have a great local butcher though, might be a dollar or so more per kg but they can tell me exactly what I'm getting, they trim the fat to whatever level I like, cut steaks to the exact thickness I want, etc. I usually buy 2-3kg so I always get it cheaper too. They also make their sausages on site, which is always a treat, it's made of actual meat and not whatever random meat particles mixed with fat that you get in supermarket ones.

        • exactly - im not saying what i do is for everyone because when i do get the meat its a process of trimming, cutting , vacuum sealing which does take time. i would suggest getting a small freezer to start with and if you have friends that want the same quality you can buy bulk, get the quality and save alot. When i went into the butcher they were selling porterhouse wagyu for $95/kg AA 6-7 quality which is a joke. Im paying $37/kg mb4+ PR for a better quality of meat.

  • Are rump steaks any good for pan searing?

    • Hit & miss at Woolworths… Avoid the market value ones and look for decent marbling/centre cut.

Surprisingly consistent budget option($22/kg) for pan/BBQ are their pepper steaks…not sure what cut (looks like round fillet off topside).

    • Each to their own but in my book you must tenderize rump first. You can even use kiwi fruit or the juice (check google) or with a meat tenderizer tool.

Thanks OP. A couple of cheap chunky beef stroganoff slow cooks will be had. Makes for a decent winter meal. 😋

which meat there is best for mincing at home with a meat grinder?

    • +1

I buy whole rumps when on sale perfect the mincer been doing it for years .

Aldi is a lot cheaper than Woolies when it vomes to meat. Bought porterhouse for $24/kg

    • +2

Aldi unless you buy their very limited premium beef selection the std ones are very chewy … eg. their scotch fillet are cheap for chewy as hell….

  • +1

Winning! Woolies replaced the Casserole beef with Macro diced beef for me so basically 50% off.

  • +3

This ended up being really worthwhile.

I got all the casserole beef I needed for the week - 2kg at about 50% off and they subbed in an organic steak for my last order ($40+ per kg).

One of the most random deals but incredible for meal prep especially in 2024.

  • Tried checking local shops, but it said none available, even though it showed the shops? Tried diff browsers. Must not be for our area in WA?
