I was looking for something for fathers day and I came across this, it also allows me to measure trees in the daytime!

at the same time that I was a little salty that my last post received what I believed is an unwarranted downvote so to pre-empt this, I believe you can get cheaper models from Aliexpress (e.g. PF2E https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006804182625.html which appears to be $64.99 before discount codes), however I could not find the same model PF240 cheaper on Aliexpress (https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005004839441209.html for $86.71 before codes). Regardless shipping is a lot faster via eBay (received within two days).

The listing description for this are seemingly inconsistent and I've replicated below

[600 Yards Rangefinder Devices]: The laser rangefinder measurement range is 6-600 yards, so you can easily get measurement information for most objects at long distances. Very suitable for golf, hunting, and outdoor sports.

I personally bought the PF280 Pro which largely has the same features, but I bought it because I assumed higher number = better, pro = better. That said, appears to only be 4 available so doesn't appear to be worth posting, and the listing description is a bit funny (e.g. this image is true in that it can be focused with a diopter, but it's definitely not an LCD screen image), the manual also says it doesn't have golf scanning mode, whereas the table in the listing says it does, but the picture in the listing says it doesn't. I am also not clear what that is anyway so I can't verify. Feel free to correct me in the comments.

  • Product name says meters, product description says yards.
    600y ~~ 550m. Not too far off.

    • lol - I've personally given up on trying to compare their products, I reckon there's at least 20+ mistakes on the description/listing.

how many modes is it? 3 or 4 or more?

      I'm pretty confident it's 5 - but how can I know?

anyway, I could definitely find more (once I start looking at the pictures)

  • Would be good to hear some first hand experiences with these. Cheap and nasty range finders can be very hard to use.

I have the slightly more premium version of this, and it seems well built and quick (measurement time wise) and reasonably reliable (i.e. measuring same point gives similar results). I'm unable to make comments on its accuracy and it correctly typically ignores short distances, though I did get it to provide me with a reading of 3.5m to a fly screen when testing it indoors.

it gave reasonable numbers in the 20-50m range for things I'm relatively confident I know the distances of, and it ignored far measurements (i.e. >2km/sky) which is good. I was just testing to see if wasn't completely making things up before I give it away :)

the optics are nice (and much clearer than my phone zoom)

      • Thanks for that. Is it easy enough to pin point the spot you want?

Also, can you set it measure in metres, or is it yards only?

        • +1

It seemed to me who has never used anything like this to do so, I measured the distance to points across the backyard, road, roof lines, fences. The zoom isn't super high (less than typical binoculars) so was easy to 'navigate' around.

As my testing at night showed, it is a lot more challenging in the dark to pinpoint something, but that said I don't know who else golfs in the pitch black. Perhaps need to invest in their night vision gear, the NV20 (though definitely not serious about that, unless someone can come up with a good use for me).

It measures in both, hold the M button for 2 seconds to switch the manual says, but came out of the box with metres.

Why do you need slope compensation when the earth is flat?

    • -4

      made in china

      • Christ almighty, don't cut yourself on that edge champ

    • Earth may be flat but mountains aren't flat, I don't think. Unless they're fake mountains I guess. Wouldn't surprise me these days.

awesome, just in time for the rally on the weekend

    • Don't miss this time.

    • MyGod , there is such a good joke here ,
but I’m not touching it .

  • I would love to be able to measure tree heights easily with a laser. I wasn't sure about how good this one would be for that.

….I'm now looking at $2000 plus lasers. This is not in my price bracket.

I don't know if I need it enough to delve deep enough to find what's acceptable quality for the lowest price. It was certainly an interesting rabbit hole though.

      Are you me?

Realistically this is a bit of a terrible tool for that job, unless your trees are over 8m. I was about to make a measurement of 3.9m of a mango tree using the point to point measurement functionality, I suspect accuracy is low and would vary based off the angle you’re measuring from.

Yeah I hope people could tell I wasn’t serious about tree measuring, though it is the first thing I did (and it does work well in direct sunlight).

Now to work out if I can prune it legally!

I similarly got into a bit of a rabbit hole looking into surveying equipment.

    • How cheap do you want to get? You can do it with a stick, it's child's play - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3vrHDEzbcs

You can duct tape a laser to it if you really want to.

    • +2

mate if you grab a compass with a clinometer, you can determine the angle to the top of the tree and then just multiply your laser distance by tan A. ie: y = x tan A.
Don't forget to add your eyeball to ground height. No need to dump an extra 2k on gear.

I would love to be able to shoot trees with a laser.

  • On one hand these are an absolute must for any half-serious golfer, on the other hand if your old man has already been playing 40+ years without one good luck getting him to use it.

    • Nah he just started during covid and he loves golfing at all hours, so perhaps can also help seeing the glow in the dark balls at night

      • ok I returned home, as a golf range finder it's unusable at night - though I don't know how many that is relevant for, still functions fine as a monocular - though you won't be able to read the distance/speed (unless you look at something with reasonable brightness)

  • Just wondering if this is a better option for about $5.50 more? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/155997019303

Main difference send to be that it takes replaceable CR2 batteries (op's model is rechargeable). It seems that this one also definitely has flag lock. Op's model seems iffy on that.

    Thoughts?

    • +1

my unprofessional view (based off trying to understand the differences between products across various inconsistent platforms) is that your link's listing description seems to have a better (more accurate) representation of what you'll get in the box as it provides "correct" diopter value and I would say flag lock is definitely not in the model I've posted as it says in the description (Flag-lock: NO).

so this is flag lock? 【Pin Lock with Vibration】—Flag Acquisition with Pulse Vibration Technology: provides the golfer a short vibrating to verify the laser rangefinder has locked on to the flag pin on the green and give you the right distance. The flagpole locking function support a distance up to 250yards (Flag-lock only).

I cannot even determine whether my model has it, the box and manual mention it though (and the feature is available in the interface). as a non-golfer I can't really quite see why it's needed, can't you simply just measure to the flag?

my guess as to the main differences, ability to turn off slope compensation, batteries, allegedly accuracy (though my suspicion is they're actually all equal)

As per the prior comments about looking on Aliexpress, I thought it's cheaper on AliExpress ($67.62) from their official store BUT it's not actually the same model, how wildly absurd. It's the white one is that price, but the black model isn't and oddly a lot more expensive as has minorly different features comparison from the description but then according to this the PF240 model (which this one should be) has flag locking - at this point you just question what is truth.
