Hot Water System Defect - Warranty

Hello, I've had a heat pump hot water system installed about 1.5 years ago and noticed that the PTR valve is rusting.

Each time I flush, it runs brown then clear.

Supplier is claiming since their warranty for parts is 1 year, therefore would have to charge to fix. Would this be arguable in terms of ACL?

That should definitely be arguable, that looks as bad as my old 14 year old heater I removed.

    brand?
but to answer your question, yes definitely.
i would skip reporting to the consumer protection body and going through mediation, and go straight to filling a magistrates court letter and hand it to them.

That looks nasty. Definitely cheap materials not up to the task and therefore consumer guarantees. What brand is it?

OP are you in Canberra per chance?

We had a hws that did the same. The PTR valve was replaced 3 times and then someone did some testing and found all the brands units in Canberra were doing the same thing due to the water. We eventually argued and got a refund on the whole unit.

    • in VIC

    • What unit was that so I can avoid?

What brand? Would love to know and avoid, particularly if they avoid warranty like that.

    Warranty Policy
Warranty- 7 Years on Cylinder, 5 Years on Compressor, and 2 Years on Workmanship
The Heat Pump installation kits come with a one-year warranty starting from the installation date. These kits include important parts like Pressure and Temperature Relief (PTR) valves, Tempered valves, Safety Switches, and other similar items.

PTR Valves are made from brass, so would have 'verdigris' if oxidising which you see a slight bloom at the thread end of the valve. All that nasty brown rust is from the steel tank, not the valve. Your tank has a 7 year warranty.

  • What brand heat pump unit, as above, that looks to be rust on the tank connection

  • I hope this is not an indication of things to come for many households that installed inexpensive heat pump hot water systems from a fly by night company.

  • Looks like it's the actual fitting or the tank rusting, not the valve. I love the dodgy job they've done sealing the water outlet fitting as well, looks like they wound the thread tape on the wrong way when they put it on the fitting 😂

      $33 special I'm assuming

We aren't allowed to do any of our own plumbing work, yet it's fine to have "plumbers" that do garbage like that.

  • We probably won't find out the brand since they almost certainly cheaped out and went for a bargain basement unit.
