Have had this since it was first released. Have been very happy with it. Solid performance and stability.

+1 same. Been great little router.

Would this be a good upgrade for my 5 year old ASUS RT-AC66U B1?

It's recently started having issues requiring a reboot to get internet access back (not often but randomly every 3-8 weeks) currently have 17 devices connected over wifi (including smart lights and plugs)

      • I have the AC88u and it's going strong.

Would like Wifi 6 now though or even 7.

    • agree!

    • I had some wifi connectivity issues but since updating it has been flawless.

    • +4

+1. My replacement for my Asus RT-AC88U which I was going to get an Asus RT-AX88U Pro, but found this with the same specs at more than half the price.

Phenomenal WiFi performance. I can get WiFi at my back yard that the signal needs to travel through 2 solid brick walls and reach roughly about 12 - 15 metres into my backyard.

      Very happy with my purchase.

    • +1 it's solid
      i bought from amazon
not sure what the experience is like directly from GL.iNet

  • Question to those who owns this:

If you have this as your main router, turning on Ad Guard and VPN on this enables it on all your sub devices too?

For e.g. Flint 2 as main router connected to NBN, then another WAP which is from say TP Link or Unify via a PoE. If I have Adguard ON this, with the WAP also has Adguard?

Sorry if that’s a stupid question. Networking noob here.

    • +4

      Correct.
Whole network will share same settings.

      • Thank you fellow ozbargainer 🙂

  • $227 on Amazon right now.

Paid $200 with paypal from GL.iNet's website with free shipping.

      • How did you pay with paypal? I don't see it as an option :/

EDIT: I'm blind! I see the option now :D

      • Pay through Paypal, but add a Wise card to Paypal for best conversion rate. Makes about $192 for me.

        • +1

Thanks for the tip, will keep in mind for future :)

Nice router. Pity it doesn't feature Mesh capability like some routers do.

    • +1

You can set a second one and use it in extender mode.
Its got this in the control panel.

      -Router
Create your own private network. The router will act as NAT, firewall and DHCP server.
      -Access Point
Connect to a wired network and broadcast a wireless network.
      -Extender
Extend the Wi-Fi coverage of an existing wireless network.
      -WDS
Similar to Extender, please choose WDS if your main router supports WDS mode.

      • The only problem with extender mode is that it cuts the WiFi performance in half. Not good for WiFi performance.

        • Extending on one band and then attaching devices to the other band will help to preserve bandwidth.

    • This is the tipping point for me, i love all the features but i require a mesh network. Im currently running two Huawei AX3 routers. But adguard/pihole kills the mesh. So ive had to manualy set each devoce dns. It would be nice for the Glinet routers to support mesh. Im constanly moving back and forth

        Check out the GL.inet Velica

        • Thank you. This maybe the perfect solution ill look into it.

        • GL-B2200 Velica is only 802.11AC though, i.e. WiFi 5. Hopefully they'll release a WiFi 6E/7 mesh device.

          • @scotty: OOS so there is a good chance a new model is coming

      • But adguard/pihole kills the mesh.

        How so?

        • It seems it blocks somthing to do with huawei. If i set DNS to the RaspPi every so oftern maybe 2 days maybe a week it drops of and i have to power cycle the 2nd unit. Since removing dns its working 100% again. Ive tried every config and resets iver 2 years now. But it is what it is.

@BinChicken69: Can you get a couple of TP-Link power points and schedule a restart every X days?

Edit: there's so many possible issues, it's hard to diagnose, unfortunately.

  • Anyone else get the Archer ax1500 wifi 6 from a few weeks ago?

    Enjoying my nbn20

  • Would this be a good option to use with Starlink? My gen3 router doesn't have the best wifi range across my house. It's fairly close though, so I don't think we need mesh.

Warning for anyone purchasing this router
The firmware is very hit and miss.
Could have great performance could have absolutely terrible.
Bought one a few months back and the stock firmware that came with it had terrible speed for WiFi 6 tried updating to the mediatek sdk beta and also the openwrt beta but still had terrible performance.
Was getting 50mbps download speed on 5ghz wifi 6 no matter what band I tried. Was also using a rz616 WiFi card which uses a mt7922 chipset so should theoretically work best with a mediatek WiFi router. I also tested with a ax200 WiFi card and was no better.
Idk if my unit was faulty or all the firmware versions at the time had issues.
From what I have read online some firmware versions are bad others are good especially the earlier ones near when it was first released.
Luckily got it from Amazon so just sent it back.
Ended up getting a Asus ax86u pro and it has been great.

    • I've had a similar experience, the Asus with Merlin firmware is trusty and trouble-free.

    • +1

Yes It had Firmware issues in the beginning but with a firmware update all good now.

      I would buy another one.

    • Similar, I purchased a Slate AXT1800 (wifi6) and have been waiting ages for native openwrt firmware. It's very close (https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/pull/14950). The official vendor firmware is ok, but, difficult to trust it and I think the full performance will only be realized in the community. It's a nice sized travel router, smaller than the linked bargain.

  • Question to Ozbargainers, I have just moved to a 2 bedder apartment and upgraded my internet to 1000/50. I do nothing crazy, would this be a good router for me?

    • +1

Will work; use the 5ghz network. Wifi is hard to get 1:1 speeds compared to a direct cable to PC.

      Just got 731/45 with a 1000/50 on 5Ghz
      81/42 on 2.4

Wow that is actually a crazy difference.

      • legend, I will have 1 PC connected via cable and others via wifi. Thank you

        • +1

Via cable 924.23/47.31 at 6:18 Pm melbourne time.

  • +1

They tried to charge me $30usd for shipping even though it says free. This was after I had paid the initial amount. Cancelled.

  • Noob question, how is this better from a random Amazon recommended Wifi6 router? Do I get anything from this if I don't use too many smart home devices?

    • Oh well, got it anyways. Figured it's better to spend a bit more for future proofing

  • +1

Excellent router. I have one for home and work and haven't had any issues with it.

  • For people that have/had this router.. how long did it take for the router to establish the internet connection from power on?

    • I connected the router to my laptop before powering up by ethernet cable and once powered up it instantly started to download the latest firmware.

    • I had to put ISP settings as a one off,its pretty straight forward/quick after that.

    • I installed the Flint 1 when I got FTTP. Compared to my old Telstra modem on FTTN it was absurdly fast

  • Got one at this price, thanks!
Been looking out for a new router for a while, and this was already on my shortlist.

  • +1

Got one, thanks for the deal. I've been looking to replace my old Asus and the leading contender was the Unifi Dream Router before I found out it cant handle 1Gbps NBN for the near future.
Good 'ol wise card got loaded up in USD and I ended up paying $190AUD.

  • Keep in mind the Amazon one has 2 year warranty, the HK 1 year warranty. Worth $20? Up to you

    • +2

If they are selling to Australia, they have to adhere to local laws, which say that a product needs to be of acceptable quality, lasting, with no faults. A reasonable person would expect a router to last for at least three years, I'd argue.

Arguably, this may be a bit more difficult to get adhered to by a non-Australian vendor, but you pack some legalese into the email, they might get scared and repair, replace or refund you anyways.

On that note, in case somebody missed it: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-12-11/jb-hifi-extended-warr…

    • You are wrong there. Also a 2 year warranty bought direct from GL.iNet the one shipping from Hong Kong. The one from this deal. This is from the specs listed on the product page under the Specifications tab. It's got a 2 year manufacturer global warranty. But also if you've got to pay GST by customs then that could easily gobble up the extra $20 in tax.

      Package Content:

      Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) Router (2-year Warranty)
Power Adapter, Power Plug (Base on your shipping countries)
      Ethernet Cable
      User Manual & Warranty Card

  • +1

It says Tax may neee to be collected by customs… did you guy need to pay GST for this?

    • Good question. If you do you have to pay GST you need thank Mr. Hardly Normal.

      • Which means if GST is due through customs then it would make it around the same price as on Amazon which already has the tax factored in.

        • That seems to be correct.

    • I replied below too but no, I didn't have to pay any extra GST for my order

  • Been using one of these for a while now - very happy with it. Zero issues and good signal strength.

  • My experience here;

    The good,
Insane 5 Ghz distance. I get virtually full download speeds(100mb) outside furthest distance from house (about 15m to 18m I think estimate) while old non wifi 5GHz only get few megabits about 10m away.

Built in ad blocker is great if viewing websites, but annoying if doing Google searches and the top ad links won't load. For some reason my mobile phone will load but other devices won't load.

It has openwrt so alot to learn but it also has its own guide that's simple but can also access openwrt.

    The bad points,
Bad firmware from new when released but I think the newer firmware has addressed alot of the issues.

One of the issues is disconnections from the 5GHz like once per day(wifi is still connected but no internet) so need to either turn off and on wifi again or select another wifi like the 2.4GHz then back to 5GHz.

Im still on the old firmware so I get bad slow download speeds on the 2.4GHz(about 20ish mb) but it is stable and most of my security cameras are connected to it and being more reliable with less drop outs of the wifi connections between cameras compared to my old router which always disconnect /reconnects.

2.4GHz outside distance speed is terrible (usually the opposite is true as 2.4GHz is generally better for longer distances and 5GHz is shorter).

I will update firmware when they use the newer openwrt firmware (hopefully it maintains the speed and distance power on the 5GHz and greatly improves the 2.4GHz speed and distance)

Anyone here have similar issues and resolved it with the latest firmware?

This is the best bang for buck router at the moment.

  • Honest question. What's the benefit of these types of aftermarket devices compared to ones supplied by the ISP?

    • I can walk 1/2 of the way down my street and still get wifi coverage lol.

    • This one supports Wireguard and Adguardhome, I've found both to be super useful.

  • Initially when it was first released there were some issues with the 2.4 GHz band

That was resolved with a firmware update.

Mine also has phenomenal Wi-Fi as my signal goes through 2 solid brick walls and also about 15 m into the garden.

Don’t have any issues with the 2.4 GHz band as a few of my older devices and printer use that band exclusively.

  • Picked one up! Cheers OP

  • Did anyone have to pay import tax on this?

    • Good question!

    • +1

No, mine was delivered a couple of days ago. Didn't have to pay anything

      • +1

Did you get yours from the link here or from Amazon Australia.

I got mine back in February from Amazon Aus when it was on special for $220.00 free delivery with AU plug.

        Very happy with the unit.

From this link, I ordered before I posted it

    • Ah crap!!!

  • Just bought one for $205AUD so $50 cheaper than on Amazon. 8-12 business days though :(

  • Just bought this from GL.Inet's website and Bankwest phoned me with a fraud alert. I told them the purchase was legit.
Has anybody else had this issue?
I was going to buy from Amazon, but didn't see the reduced price in time.

  • How would this compare to the Xiaomi Mi AX6000 which i currently have.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/620697

Range is good on the Xiaomi, but would love a little better speed at range (2 story 4 bedroom house).

Tossing up between a newer solid router (like this one) or a mesh, but no ability to have a wired backbone unfortunately.

NOTE, ill be using PFSense for routing, so really only need a access point (but if this does the job no reason it cant be a wifi router)

    • Flint 2 has 1GB memory, 8GB eMMC and a MediaTek Quad-core CPU (comparing to Xiaomi's Qualcomm / 512MB) which I think would be useful if you want to run services on the router. However it doesn't really matter if you are just using it as an AP.

      • Thanks.
Not overly worried about running services on it as I have that sorted.
        Just looking for good range/speed

  • Anyone know if this one vs the TP deco Mesh system (https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09SPN9B32) for $239? Like the openWrt of GLI, but practically not sure if Mesh system from TP-deco is better for additional $30

  • At first I was a bit disappointed with this router, coming from an old google wifi mesh set up, until I moved it to a more central position in the house and now couldn't be happier. Strong 5ghz wifi throughout.

    • How big of a house?
I'm trying to gauge if it would cover mine well.

  • Hye guys, the coupon is still working, just got $5 off. Thanks!
