Tesla 8.66" Android Rear Multimedia Entertainment Screen $386 Delivered @ Satonic Autoparts, China

381
VANILLA

The people in China that work on these accessories were able to decode the seat control signals via the CAN port so these rear screens have now been updated and improved to 1. Work better with the latest software so there's reduced input and audio lag but more importantly 2. Remove the necessity of routing seat cables entirely.

What this means is the installation of one of these is now literally one cable daisy chain under the center console and you're done, reducing the install time from over 30 minutes to under 5 minutes. Here's a photo of one | put in the other day. It literally is less than a 5 minute job start to finish which anyone can do. Pretty neat. They've also added a pin lock function to the screen.

VANILLA has also been updated to bring the frunk kit to an ATL of $396 and works sitewide.

Please note that this latest model with updated seat controls via CAN looks exactly the same as the older model (same screen and shell) so if you buy it from Ali YMMV and you may get an old one. I know that hansshow still stock the old one atm.

  • The rear entertainment console came with our highland model 3, however it kind of sucks that if they kids are using the rear cinema then we have to listen to spongebob in the front too.

    • +2

Yeah this is a retrofit kit for legacy 3 and Y. Not required for Highland or Juniper. I thought the highland is meant to localise the audio output to the rear speakers only?

      • Maybe I'm missing something, but I wish so.

          • +8

@hopper: It is not really like that. When I brought the car I was happy with all the features it had and in the last year have had so many extra, some are basic like Amazon, youtube music, new games and others are quite advanced like being able to see 7 cameras around your from the app anywhere in the world and video of the cameras being sent to your app if the alarm goes off.
No other car manufacturer give you so many additional features after you buy the car. These updates are for the life of the car, people are getting updates on 10 year old models. With my old Mazda they wanted to charge me $200 to update the maps on my 3.5 year old car!

            • -3

@PerthectDeal: You comparing a $70k plus Telsla which had massive price drops over the years vs $30k Mazda ? Isnt $200 to update a map would be walking in the park ? 😉

              • @boomramada: The price drop is to do this the batteries getting cheaper and will only be a concern if not holding the car long term. The Mazda was $55k, there is not that much of a price difference these days.

        • +1

If kids are watching something in the back, ours only plays the sound through the rear speakers

        • @Commodore64 You should be able to find Audio Settings then click Balance, and you should be able to move the sound focus to the back so the sound is much more quiet in the front than it is in the rear

    • +1

I believe a recent update allows them to connect via Bluetooth headphones so you don't have to.

    • +1

That's why you get the kids to wear headphones.

The shanghai teslas are some of the best built teslas out there. The hate is irrational.

    • +3

The very device that you typed this on is also made in or assembled in china….

    • +1

Here, take my neg! You sure do like making claims without any proof!

    • I guess you don't either …
As some of the control modules are actually made in India.

  • Would installing this void warranty?

    • Gets asked often and the consensus is no. It’s fully plug and play and reversible. To void your warranty Tesla SC would need to prove that the accessory caused the issue. There are a lot of people with similar mods out there and there’s no precedent for SC causing a fuss about them in Australia.

      • +2

As a person who has been modding cars for over 20 years and ran into warranty issues like asked, you are not entirely correct. Most car manufacturers will state that the car worked before the person modified it, so it was the modified part that caused the issue unless the person can prove otherwise. I have first hand experience in this, even down to Ford stating that my gearbox had issues due to me putting mag wheels on the car, and my Commodore engine had issues due to me putting a Cat back exhaust on it.

        • Not going to dispute your experience but there are thousands of mods like these on Teslas in Australia and there’s no example yet of a refused warranty claim by Tesla SC due to an add on accessory so the point stands

          • +2

@turkz1: Yeah not disputing that either, just giving my two cents, as if they want, they will point to the modification causing the issue. But then again, if it was a $0.50 fuse, im sure they would replace it, but if it the whole system fried, they will lay blame, just saying.

Oh, and i still mod my cars and wear any risks and keep the old part to put back in place ;)

    • +10

It is made in China for the Teslas in Australia that are also made in China. Not sure how you arrived at the conclusion that I’m withholding. I literally said that the people in China decoded CAN to make this newer model?

        • Updated

    • What is going on with your comment? OP specifically said People in China manage to decode it, that's the whole context of how People in China made the device work. I'd say that's making it 200% clear that it's Chinese made.

Were you thinking it's proudly made in Australia or something? 🤔

      • No it’s been changed dw. It’s actually a good product gets my +

  • +2

If this used the cars Internet connection like the front screen I would buy one in a seconds. Having to use your own data is a pain.
Hope they can do this in the future

    • Unfortunately that won’t be possible until Tesla open up the network themselves

    • Is there no hotspot option with a tesla?

      • Not natively unfortunately.

        • Wow thats something I thought would be a given, so convenient if travelling with kids.

  • Hi there. What version of Android is this? I've got one on Android 11 and it's horrible compatibility with most Google Play apps

    • Android 13

  • cat satonic-autoparts.com | sed "s/Andriod/Android/g"

    • You need curl 💪 not a cat.

    • +1

There're still 11 Andriods on the page, you'll need to run it again with a "-i"

  • +4

Genuine question to those have these installed, won’t kids get dizzy for watching with head down while cars in drive?

  • +2

Or buy an iPad 9th with a headrest pad mount.

  • +1

In my case I bought from these guys a few weeks ago and they don't respond to my questions post-sales (they were basic questions about delivery).
Also, make sure you create an account before/during purchase, because their "View" order link in email doesn't work. Redirects to https://account.satonic-autoparts.com/orders/<etc> - the https://account.satonic-autoparts.com/ site doesn't work.

    • Have they responded to your questions now? If you don’t mind what channels did you try to contact them through so I can pass the feedback on re poor response times. Happy to step in and help if they haven’t yet sorted you out. Also, thanks for flagging the view issue. It will be looked into asap.

      • (Replied to the wrong sub-thread, just placing the reply here also, where it should be)..
        24/07 - placed order
26/07 - "shipment on the way" email received with tracking link.
08/08 - shipping status hadn't moved along. Tracking still saying that same from when I first received the tracking link - "Your package is waiting to be picked up by the carrier." Sent email to Satonic to ask why nothing had yet happened in terms of shipping.
10/08 - no response to email, and still no change in tracking status. Sent another e-mail, asking again, also saying that I will initiate chargeback with CC provider if I don't hear back.
11/08 - shipping finally starts showing movement .. "Goods ordered … package outbound …".
So, shipping is occurring and I should get the item soon. However at no stage did I ever heard back from Satonic. The e-mails were sent to [email protected] .

    • Thanks mate the view order issue in emails is now resolved. Also, re your order they are investigating. The advice so far is that it got held up at their forwarder and needed manual intervention.

  • I read a few reviews that say these rear scrrens have audio lag because of bluetooth audio. Is that true? So it is not lipsynced …around 1s delay

    • This is (surprisingly) a Tesla issue not an issue with the Android screen. If you connect to bluetooth headphones for example or use the onboard speakers the delay is not present. There are some reports of recent Tesla updates resolving this but as an alternative if you use apps like VLC for playback you can set an audio delay to sync.

        • Thanks noz. I’ll pass that along. If you pm me an order number I’ll check specifically what happened here as well. The expectation is that order to delivery should only be 7-10 days door to door.

          • @turkz1: Apologies, I replied to the wrong sub-thread. Anyway, I'll PM the order number.

  • Hm yeah what could go wrong.

    (Edit. CAN bus.)

    • +2

Mate it’s CAN bus not CANNOT bus. She’ll be right.

    • I have three separate dongles hanging off my canbus, it's totally fine.
Motorised boot (old model 3), front display and sexy buttons commander.
Surprising that all the splitters fit under the centre console.

  • Can I install this on my AU Falcon?

    • +3

Depends. Does your AU falcon go stutututututu?

  • How are the ergonomics in the rear for young kids watching the screen? Am thinking whether I get something like this to entertain a couple of kids on a road trip or just stick with a simple tablet mount.

    • Very usable. Tesla has formalised this design in S, X, new highland and it has already been leaked for the juniper as well so it must be alright. My biggest concerns with a tablet mount are theft and also if the worst happens and the vehicle is in a collision you have a large metal brick with a battery flying around the car.

      • I mean in terms of kids having to bend their head down to watch the screen. Is the angle actually ok for rear passengers to watch for long? For incidental use I think it’s ok based on what I tried with highland but just not sure about a two hour road trip since kids will watch forever even if it hurts their necks!

  • Ah Tesla, doing the devils work. Satanic indeed.

    • +2

No express or implied affiliation with beelzebub

  • When Tesla releases new software, will it have an impact to this Rear Multimedia Entertainment screen? I.e. Will it work for a few months and stop working after Tesla releases a new software one day?

Also, will you be able to share a video on the installation steps/process? Just want to see how easy/hard to install it.

    Thanks.

    • It’s possible but unlikely. If there is a software impact on the screen an update will be issued within 2 weeks of the issue cropping up.

Here’s the install video. It’s genuinely super easy.

      • Thanks. The Model year of my Model Y is 2023, so I guess I should go for the Model Y 2023+ Version?

What are the differences between Model Y 2020 to 2022 vs Model Y 2023+?

        • Yes. Think they made the cable slightly longer as some US cars have the CAN cable in the footwell side of the center console. You can order the 2023+ model it will fit your car.

      • It has happened once this year already. Tesla changed the battery % format sometime around firmware 2024.20 and it's up to vendors to update firmware. Enhauto were pretty quick to update their Commander, but still nothing from vjoycar for my HUD.

  • This isn't the cheapest available for the exact latest 8.66" rear screen being sold out of China (sold under various brand names), see this that is $322 delivered to Australia:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007250348194.html

    • That listing is for 2019-2022 only ? Is there a difference for 2024 MY … may be 16v battery ? Thanks

      • There's https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007507159000.html and lists compatibility for 2019-2024 Model 3/Ys and still cheaper than the OP.

        • I came across this one too but looks like it requires additional cabling for front seat control.

          • @fifoo: Yeah Satonic has the latest model without seat cabling at the moment. I’m not sure if any other sellers do but I haven’t seen it elsewhere. Not sure if bge read the OP.

            • @turkz1: They do and I did.

              • @bge: The photo of the wiring harness in the item you linked literally shows the seat cables that are no longer required in the new model. Read the OP and check your link again.

  • OP: Does this work with 2024 model Y ? And what’s a “car play dashboard type” option on the order page? Thanks

    • It does work with 2024 Y. I just installed one into a 2024 the other day. The carplay 8.8 dashboard screen. It’s a bundling offer. You can ignore it unless you’re in the market for a speedo type display with carplay.

  • Bought one, hope it works well =)

I'm currently using those S3XY buttons, but they don't look very nice above the vents 🤷‍♂️

    • +1

      Hope you like it!

  • @turkz1, just wondering how long the shipping lead time is for this to Melb? And is Android version going to be upgradeable or will it permanently stay at Android 13?

    • +1

Traditionally 10 days from China however Satonic are actively trying to reduce this by housing stock onshore. There is a bulk shipment on the way at the moment so I’d say 10 days or less safely. Android will continue to receive security updates however I’m unsure at this stage whether version upgrades will be in the pipe. That will be somewhat hardware dependent and testing will be required.

      • cool thanks, have ordered
