[NSW] PRO DIVE Open Water Scuba Diving Course: Weekday $169 @ PRO DIVE (Alexandria)

200

Price for above is weekdays. Weekend 249.

EDIT As stated by some in the comments, this is also offered in their Manly branch as well as Alexandria so pick whichever

Price all inclusive of fees and gear rental.
Personal Transport to dive sites at your expense

One of the cheapest open water courses I’ve seen yet.
While the agency itself is relatively unknown as compared to Padi/SSI etc, it is ISO compliant and is an equivalent.

For those who prefer well known brands can do this and then do your AOW with Padi/SSI when you go to Bali or other vacation spots effectively bringing down the total cost certifications.

  • Oh wow now that's an amazing price , cant help but wonder where is the catch

  • I actually did my padi with these guys back in 2011. They are a pretty large company. I'm still skeptical though.

  • Good deal if it's legit, normally around $500 for OW ticket. Best diving in SEA is Philippines and Indo.

BEWARE: Your dive certification may not be accepted outside of ProDive, and almost certainly will not be accepted outside of Australia (even though they will try to convince you that it's by 'International Standards'), as this was a license developed by ProDive.

While you may have the diving skills after the course, ultimately it's up to the dive operator to decide whether they'd accept the license.

Sorry but you’re incorrect. Times have changed since, there are now a bajillion agencies ever since they introduced the ISO standard. They are doing this mainly because (PADI especially) charge these dive shops excessive fees, royalties and yearly payments, which ultimately is passed onto you.

Usually PADI/SSI/SDI are the old birds around and have more instant acceptance. But dive shops will either outright accept it or do a quick search to check.

If the dive shop you are at won’t spend the two minutes to check it online, they will likely not spend 2 mins to check your rental gear so beware of that.

Agencies sell books, instructors train students.
You can always “upgrade” to PADI or SSI when you do the advanced open water course using this as the prerequisite.

There's also BSAC, which I'm guessing is relatively unknown outside of the UK but dates back older than PADI

    • This is not true I did the course with these guys about 5 months ago and have gone to Hawaii and Philippines since and had no issue at all with the certification, my partner has also a certification from CMAS and most people do not know it but never been a problem, from what I can gather there are about 180 agencies and they run the same standard. Other shops do try and scare divers with this for some reason. I personally had a good time in the course, it was demanding with 1 pool session and 4 ocean dives to do but all in all I got a great experience out of it and I been diving once a week ever since. I did pay more for the course but they must have a sale.

I did this course with pro dive over 12 months ago, about paid near 300. Thought it was cheap because I did it mid week and winter or early spring. I've since dived internationally in Fiji no problems. Probably cheaper because at least half a dozen in my group failed the swim test which is the first thing that happens.

I would recommend doing it, I enjoy it so much. I find scuba very relaxing. I never thought I needed it being a life long stong swimmer even said on my honeymoon I'll just free dive I don't need to waste to money on equipment and a licence. Got it for subsequent holidays with family and glad I did.

  • I did this course a few years ago at the Manly branch for about the same price. It was marketed as a winter special at the time. I've used the certification many times since, including in Christmas Island and Samoa, and nobody bat an eyelid.

  • Same price in Manly, and I reckon the beach is better there…
Did this a couple of years back for $199, great price then, fantastic price now!
They'll try to upsell you with 'discounted' advanced courses, some of which include scuba gear. Worth investigating prices of extra courses and gear before you do this Beginner Course so you can compare when they offer you these on the day.

  • I just did mine and paid north of $300, and thought I was doing well for that. For $170 this is a total steal.

Did this course two weeks ago for $199 in Alexandria. The instructors are awesome and very well set up course (online modules prior to starting the course then pool for a 1/2 day then 1.5 days of dives). My group did two dives at Malabar and two at Gordons Bay plus the morning pool session at Victoria Park pool. Didn't see much at Malabar but saw plenty of Port Jackson sharks at Gordons Bay and a 2.5m Wobbegong! Can't recommend it more! Just fyi, a lot of the people doing the course are young backpackers getting their OW before going to Cairns.

    • How was the water temperature? Freezing? And do they expire?

Also a cheap way to do a refresher course if already PADI certified but haven't dived for a while.

    • +1

True! Plus you get 4 dives instead of 1 dive.

  • Note this is weekday which is why its cheaper - great for those who still have flexibility with work or students.

Prerequisites: good attitude and must be able to swim - if you have any medical conditions per dive medical https://www.diveengine.com/v4/community/medical.asp?Explorer…
go see the dive doctor to get fitness assessed to continue.

Worth getting the certification in time for spring summer season; also with whales coming down the coast - if you end up doing a boat dive in the near future, you can see the whales.

  • I couldn't tell if the license agency was "Dive World Wide" or not.
I then checked the other course and found Pro Adventures as the agency, but that didn't say if that's the agency licsensing.
can anyone say which agency your card is?
