keep in mind no gigabit. very strange. I guess cameras and nothing else maybe?

    • I think this would be fine for Unifi cameras, I know the fact the new G5 Turret Ultra, they just run on 10Mbit only.

Thanks for highlighting this. Was about to purchase.

Cameras, VoIP phones, PoS terminals, electronic signs, …

But yes, for home users here, probably just cameras. And maybe a remote wifi access point for IoT stuff.

a wifi AP on 100mb is a bit silly

        • No it isn't.

@bargaino: The amount of times I've onboarded a client and they have 'slowness' caused by PC's running through WiFI connected to a 100mbps switch back to a company file server..

            • @ShaneLikesABargain: Is the 100Mb really the bottleneck? I've seen wifi problems far worse than that.
Oh "fileserver" - you are talking about office PCs and big documents, then yes. Bloody office PCs should not even be using wifi IMHO.

              • @bargaino: Mainly it's due to the AP plugged into the 100mbps switch. Usually it will be they open this large video, CAD or other large format file quickly some times but other times it lags behind.

You can get away with a lot at 100mbps. Not many household services or things utilise near 100mbps. But it's scenario based.

But for future proofing, I do think it would be worth opting for 1gbps.

    • keep in mind no gigabit. very strange. I guess cameras and nothing else maybe?

Absolutely perfect for cameras- they'd all tie into this for PoE and then the switch would hang off a main gig switch.

      • Last month I was troubleshooting an issue where security cameras weren't working, dropping out and lagging.. Ended up finding The NVR was connected to their security vendors' 100mbps POE switch and utilisation on the port was 100%. Moved it to our 1gbps switch and it was using a constant 240mbps.

        • I don't think anyone is suggesting this $36 switch can be used for any CCTV deployment. A $36 switch would be more relevant to e.g. a house with 4-6 CCTV cameras doing 8-10Mbps each.

  • I get this error when trying to buy this item and it is becoming much more common with other items as well. Can anyone else from rural areas buy this item or is it just me?

"Sorry, this item can't be delivered to your selected address. Learn more. You may either change the delivery address or delete the item from your order.".

The old trick of changing your default address and then changing your delivery address during checkout doesn't work.

    • Could it be?

Address type - certain address types preclude delivery speeds, due to carrier capabilities.

Why Can't I Ship to an Address?

      • No I don't think so, my address is just a regular rural address.

        • My parents live at a standard house in the CBD of a small city near Adelaide and Amazon won't ship half their catalogue to their address.

I live in metro Adelaide and they won't ship heavy large items to me.

Not as clear-cut as you think.

          • @BradH13: Can confirm this will not ship to my parents, but will ship to me.

    • Same here, I suspect they have contract issues with couriers for regional areas.

      Cool comment, unfortunately it's FOS.

  • Can this connect to a harddrive to store video footage or do i need another product for that?

    • Wut? No. This has nothing to do with connecting hard drives… unless that hard drive is a NAS. And this switch is too slow for a NAS.

  • N.B.: 8× PoE ports, 30W max on a single port.

You can get gigabit for this price

Can you give an example of an 8-port PoE gigabit switch for this price?

  • What type of family environment needs an 8-port swtich?

    • +3

      Yeah… that's way too small! :)

This will allow to connect up to 8 ip cameras for example.

    • A family that has 8 or less wired IP cameras covering the home.

But otherwise, yeah, 8 ports is pretty undersized for a wired household. Good thing this is only 100Mbps which means it's purely for cameras or maybe a games console.

    • +1

I have an 8 port switch with every port populated and I live alone. If it can be cabled, it should be.

That being said, this is really only useful for cameras due to PoE and 100mbit, for which, I wouldn't have thought 8 ports would be excessive.

    • Duh… the best damn family environment in town!

    • +2

My home office uses an 8-port switch: printer, desktop, home laptop dock, work laptop dock, NAS, a Proxmox host for VMs, a spare port for tinkering, and an uplink port.

My home theatre then has another 8 port switch full with: 2x game consoles, Apple TV, Fetch TV, SFF media PC, a RetroPie, a WiFi extender, and an uplink port.

The garage then has another 8-port switch full with: 3x cameras, 1x UniFi Access Point, network firewall/gateway, Zigbee gateway for the watering system, and links to the other two switches.

I need more uplink ports for the garage switch, because I have other rooms running on WiFi despite there being a perfectly good Ethernet port on the wall, but I have no spare capacity to use it. So I’ll be upgrading it to at least 16 ports.
