Thoughts on Discount Groceries like 'Beyond Best Before' and NQR

Seems to be a lot of coverage on these grocery stores at the moment, interested in people's thoughts, do you guys shop here, why or why not.

    No

    why or why not.

    Too far

    • Check google maps "Cheaper by Miles" stores in Melbourne. You are in Melbourne, right? Maybe more variety of goods there. It was covered in the news previously.

Looks like they are mainly in the western suburbs…

Nearest to me is 10km…. Too far.

        • I got excited hoping they were in the west but most of them are in the north actually, footscray the only westie one

It's mostly odd flavours of stuff that didn't sell which are cheap. The rest of the stuff is just as expensive as other supermarkets with limited range, meaning you have to go-to Wollies anyway.

    • Wallys' go to Wollies.

      • Looks like I got f#*ked by autocorrect again.

  • I've been to a NQR recently, JIMB0 is correct.

I remember years ago NQR were great. The issue is when you have 1-2 stores, the store can buy smaller quantities and make it worthwhile for the stores to sell.

When you have 27 stores you have to purchase in much larger quantities to distribute to all 27 stores, hence, it's not worth the time to buy that 5 boxes of cheap XZY, you need to buy at least 27 boxes.

  • BBB was great shop. I don't mind expiring or expired ones. I bought instant noodles, chips and drinks. one of the must visit if you are in Newtown.

  • I visit our closest NQR every month or so if going past. Normally spend $50 or so; chips, soft drinks, choccies being items most often bought
    .

Yes, they have some interesting things sometimes and prices can be pretty cheap. Last visit I picked up those fancy crackers for cheeseboards at $2.00, when colesworth sell them for heap more. You just need to know your products and prices without getting sucked in.

  • I've got a Cheaper Buy Miles near me. Apart from the odd weird tasting snack I haven't been disappointed yet. Plenty of in-demand items that aren't just the odd flavours, I've gotten Jarritos (all flavours), Green & Blacks chocolate, Nudie juices, Tasmanian Heritage cheeses. They've usually got a month left on the expiry or they're shelf stable items that are a couple months past their best before. I've been to an NQR and CBM is way better.

NQR used to have great items at crazy prices.
Now I find that Coles clearing the items themselves (to recover shelf space) I get better deals like Xbox Controller BBQ Shapes for $1.
NQR will sell them for $1.50-$2.

  • I love them, unfortunately no NQR's in QLD.

    • Check out Golden Circle Factory Outlet stores - Morayfield and Capalaba. Sounds similar. Some great buys!

  • BBB is good but it's not like you can do your regular grocery shopping there. Availability of goods changes constantly.

I used to go to NQR, they have really good prices.

The problem is that they mostly sell junk food and now I am trying to eat healthier.

  • I'm walking to NQR, so visit regularly. A large focus on junk food, good place to buy movie snacks.

Bags of granola woolies $9 NQR $3
Good for Kombucha and no nasty drinks 4 for $3

Better to keep looking regularly to find good value imo.

  • Local NQR I will visit every once in a while as that's the only place to stock my fav lasagna (Nonnas Lasagne). they sell it as a great price $6.50 for 700g. Whiles I am there I also check for Snowy River Pasties. I will often walk out with some weird flavours of chips or a box of tasty toobs/weird pringles and some drinks, maybe a small yoghurt or two that expire the next day.

Sometimes they do sell expired stuff, most of the stuff is either disgusting or just as (if not more) expensive than coles.

  • Never heard of them and have no idea what state they are even in let alone suburbs.
I do buy and eat things past their BB date all the time. Never had an issue.

Where are these stores you mention located?

  • Rarely there are sometimes bargains but too rare to waste my time. Often the bargins are on different flavours etc you dont find at the main supermarket. Those flavours are usually a disappointment.

  • Savemore is decent but too far to go usually. Good prices on things like yogurts and frozen, as well as random pantry items, and a wide range
