AP15

A deal for the coffee afficianados, particularly those into their fancy espresso gear.

Pesado is doing 15% sitewide on their AU store, with shipping starting around $10/free over $89. 'Deals' include:

  • Filter Basket normally $30, reduced to $15, then 15% off gives $12.75. The Breville 54mm baskets in particular seem pretty popular as a third-party replacement for bambino/barista express users
  • He[%] High Extraction Basket $72.25 - new style basket for those trying to chase the perfect cup with their extra light roasts. Can be bundled with their hybrid portafilter for $206.55 all up
  • Tamper $102 (both 53.5mm and 58.5mm) - paying extra for slightly fancier materials, machining and tolerances I guess?
  • Hybrid Portafilter $157.25 - naked and spouted portafiters. Two for the price of one (!)
  • Single Dose Bean Cellar 4pk $34 - test tubes for your coffee. With magnets. Bundle it with their stand for even more savings. Still cheaper albeit more spartan than the ones from Weber
  • WDT tool $37.40 - bog standard WDT tool, with replacable needles (alternatively you could 3d print one yourself and source the needles, or scrounge around aliexpress)
  • Sunrise Ceramic Set $12.75 for a 160mL cup and saucer set
This is part of Afterpay Day sale for 2024

  • I have their filter basket - it is great build quality and going strong.

Shame their HE baskets don't come in 54mm

  • +1

Does the 54mm 20g breville basket fit in the stock portafilter without removing the black plastic on the bottom?

      • -1

Thanks. That’s a shame. It seems like I’ll need to spend more and get a portafilter if I want to change my basket

        • You should be able to just take out the plastic guard in the breville portafilter

    • From the product description:

18g & 20g Baskets are not compatible with Bambino or Bambino Plus, you will need a Pesado 54mm Breville portafilter.
The compatibility issue is due to the plastic guard inside the bambino genuine portafilters.

Don't own one so I haven't tested it myself. I hear some 3rd party baskets might fit if you remove the plastic? Though that's doubtful with the 20g. There's a similar basket listing on Pesado's site which indicates 20g would be 26mm tall assuming they're the same shape.

Thanks. Checked the FAQ of the basket you linked and it seems like it is compatible:

        For 54mm models:

the 54mm EP basket is to be used only in Pesado Breville portafilters and will fit in Genuine Breville/Sage portafilters.

        • I'd ask them before purchasing unless they specifically say it's compatible with the Bambino portafilter.

    • +3

The basket is actually one thing about Breville machines you don't really need to worry about upgrading: https://youtu.be/U2TNEhrBU5Q?si=KPrfAiY8wfGuMh6M&t=245

      • That's true

      • Completely agree. Breville stock baskets are high quality. The only reason to get the non-he baskets are for sizes.

    • 100% nope. Had to remove my plastic thing.

  • Any benefit to these over the one that comes with the machine (e.g. Breville Barista Touch)?

  • -1

Is the benefit of high extraction basket only for light roasts? I usually have medium to dark.

    • Nope, you definitely can benefit from medium to dark. Just beaware you do grind much finer so I would cut the ratio a closer to 1:1. You get a super velvety mouthfeel with strong syrupy flavours.

      • They recommend it for light to medium roasted coffee and their EP basket for medium to dark. However you can use either basket

  • +1

I just spent hundreds upgrading my gear to Pesado gear. Can recommend them

Edit. For anyone wanting to know difference between the EP basket and the $15 Basket. Here’s a response from Pesado. I have both baskets

both are good baskets but here are some notes that make our EP basket a better choice - electro polished, allows for less friction of water for easier flow and soaking of the coffee grounds - 936 holes compared to 715 holes - the more holes creates a faster flow, so you will be able to grind slightly finer with the EP basket and extract more coffee - both baskets share similar shapes, so both will work with the same setup - the hole making in each basket is different - the EP basket has the same hole making as the VST baskets - (holes are punched from the bottom, leaving a smooth surface on the inside of the basket while the IMS Pesado - the holes are punched from both ends in different ways - creating a crevice that some say its a plus but it does nothing special to the extraction

    • I have the vst basket Is PE better? If you have experience with vst?

    • Thanks for inquiring - I was staring at the two pages trying to figure out what difference there was as they both have the same RRP

Interestingly, the $15 IMS basket is also listed as being electro-polished

    • -1

Did you notice any difference in the pesado baskets vs stock ones?

      • Yes huge difference. More flavour in espresso. Cuts through the milk better for cappuccinos.

Edit: I am grinding finer on the Pesado basket. Using Varia VS3 which is more than capable

        • By pesado basket, are you referring to the $30 EP one? Wish that was half the price like the IMS one

          • @Brakus: $30 EP one is better as you get a better extraction IMO but I found the $15 also better than the stock basket that came with my breville

  • +1

Can vouch for the quality of pesado products.
Their naked pf is very high quality, ims baskets are great too.

For tamp, just go with normcore.

    • Mhw-3bomber tamper from AliExpress is the go imo, nicer built, smoother action, dual calibrated and leveling. So nice for the price.

Love the Pesado convertible portafilter though! Being able to swap from naked to spouted is handy. And stainless steel means it's as nice as the day I bought it! So good.

      • What is the use case of the hybrid? When do you go naked or spouted?

        • +1

Spouted when you only want 1 shot and/or are sharing, naked otherwise

        • +1

I use spouted most of the time, and naked when I want to see how bad my technique is

      • +2

I like 3bomber tamper better than Normcore also and I had both (sold Normcore) best feature is the satisfying click from the 3bomber tamper

  • I've got their HE basket on my Rancillio Silvia and cannot recommend it enough! Really outstanding and at this price, It's a great way to try out high extraction.

I found a free listing for the cup and saucer.. not sure why free.

Just add to your cart when you order and hope it arrives.

      https://pesado.com.au/products/sunrise-ceramic-set-copy?vari…

      • There's a free ceramic cup and saucer set when you hit a $250 spend, so maybe it's for that? The stupid part is that it adds the regular cup listing to your cart along with a coupon code to make it free… which is then overriden by the AP15 code, so if you're not careful you'll end up paying 12.75 for a cup you don't want

    • How long have you had it? Did you experience bowing or bending? Some people gave reported issues getting the puck out. How was your experience?

      • About a year now. Zero bowing or bending. It's a seriously solid basket so i can't imagine that would be too common.
I've found it takes an extra tap to get the puck out, but that's about it. I put this down to the straight edges of the basket compared to traditional shapes.
In terms of flavour and profile, hands down i'm never going back to a traditional basket.

  • Can anyone speak to their steel portafilters and whether these damage e61 group heads which are chrome plated?

Reluctant to pull trigger as I imagine over time the steel being harder would wear down the chrome.

    • There are only (usually) two places where the portafilter touches the E61 group - (1) where the basket lip presses against the seal, and (2) where the portafilter ears are riding on the internal groove inside the head, which is in sliding friction and therefore not usually plated (not that I've ever seen anyway).

Where is it that you're concerned about?

  • Any suggestions for a more affordable (naked) portafilter in the Breville 54mm format? A bit hard to stomach spending more than half the price of a Bambino Plus on a portafilter, and that's before adding baskets/puck screens/calibrated tamper etc

Also, what is there to gain from a fancy (Pesado et al) portafilter, other than finish and heft? Any chance a cheaper one would fit worse or damage the grouphead area somehow?

  • I have decent espresso baskets 22g, will this be better than that? Will this make my espresso even more flavourful? I only drink double shot espresso or long black.
