    • Obviously I meant to say Gbox Midnight there. Anyway, each to their own I guess. Thanks for the replies.

This box + Netflix = biggest thing to happen to entertainment in years imo.

    • +1

      vpn?

  • +1

Thanks OP! Been putting off purchase of this for a while. No excuse now for me.

  • +2

    These are great little boxes.

For bonus points, have a look in your favourite App Store for ZappoTV http://www.zappotv.com/ and you can stream media from your phone / tablet to the WDLive over your WiFi.

Its really nice to shoot some video at the beach / cricket whatever, and come home and show it to everyone straight away.

PS No affiliation to ZappoTV, just a happy user of their products.

  • Do I need to attach a USB wireless adapter to access my home network?

    • +2

No the wireless is built in.

      • +2

Thanks for that - I thought it was the case. Have ordered on line for same day delivery at no charge. Thanks to OP.

  • I have the old version WDTV Live (No wireless), this is tempting with the new screen design and wireless support. Not sure how well it streams 1080p though.

  • +1

Just putting this out there for all fellow Netflix users that may not know this already.

You can adjust your streaming quality once logged in from a browser. Choose: Your Account —> Manage Video Quality

Good quality (up to 0.3 GB per hour)
Better quality (up to 0.7 GB per hour)
Best quality (up to 1 GB per hour, or up to 2.3 GB per hour for HD)

    • +1

Thats potentially a s**t load of data!

Anyway, do you use VPN or Proxy or DNS for Netflix? Or does it "just work"™ ?

  • I'm off to buy one of these today, theoretically there is a new version just around the corner called the WDTV Play, but this has been imminent for months, and I no longer see any point in waiting

    • +2

The WDTV Play looks to be essentially the same with just some limited game support thrown in and some short cut buttons on the remote, seems more of a gimmick to me as there are better options if games are what one is really after.

Buy the WDTV Live Streaming, you won't regret it.

  • I find that some files i download and need to be converted to AVI won't play on the WDTV LIVE… but it works on my older WD mini.
It's also alot slower than the WD mini.

    • What file types?

      • well AVI.. but downloaded as all types.

    • If you have windows, get an app called Gspot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSpot). You'll find the legit URL to Gspot on the Wikipedia website.

Start Gspot and open the AVI file. It will tell you what video and audio codecs were used to encode the AVI file.

Also connect the WD Live to the internet over your wireless connection and do a firmware upgrade (It's under settings and should show up as software or firware upgrade).

      Cheers,
      Rusty

      • Thanks Rusty,
I'm pretty sure i've done the upgrade but still didn't resolve my problem.
I'll give this Gspot a look into tonight ;)
But knowing what the codecs used to encode won't really help me cause i wouldn't know what to do with them lol

  • I have the old version WDTV Live (No wireless) with BRad firmware which adds a skip feature of 30sec, 1min, 3min, 5min, 15min using the skip buttons. Last time I checked this version on display in OW I couldn't see a way to skip, only fast forward. Has a firmware update changed this as as far as I am concerned this is an absolute must have feature (spoilt by XBMC I suppose).

    • I have this model and yes it can skip.
You need to fast forward first and then press the forward button.
      Hope that makes sense.

  • I had the older WDTV Live (without wifi, now $77 from JB Hifi) for my dad. Fantastic device.

Note that this $99 version removes the component input, for those without enough (or any) HDMI ports. Dad's component input image quality is great.

Yes, I just ordered the $99 one too.

  • Im interested in the WDTV but can I just ask what would be the advantages of this over say utilising an Android TV dongle such as this http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/86203 ? These dual core dongles are half the price of the WDTV, can power via the TV's USB port and through apps have much more functionality.

There are probably a hundred good reasons why the WDTV just need some education on it ;)

  • +2

Just went to JB HiFi and asked if they will beat it and they did by $1.

    • Great saving ! ;)

    • JB Hi-Fi Chatswood would not price match. Apparently OfficeWorks in North Sydney/Mosman/Dee Why is out of their "local radius".

  • Just wondering whether this device would be able to stream PC display to the TV wirelessly? The reason is that we watch PPS on PC and want to stream it straight to TV without connecting the laptop to TV via HDMI cable …..

  • Noob Question.

But can a smart TV do the same functionality like streaming etc?

    • They usually have limited access to a couple online video sites, or otherwise stream from a traditional source like PC/Console/WDTV.

    • I have a Samsung 6 series LED in the bedroom and it does stream content but it is very limited. On the upside, it has 3d content streaming using a Samsung app.

  • Does anyone know if the AU version can get the BBC iPlayer app (as well as Netflix) with the appropriate vpn/dns settings? I have the US version but from what I have read, there's no way of getting BBC onto that one. Does the factory reset with the vpn active work with the AU version? If it does, I might be tempted to get another one.

  • +1

Just got delivered. Very fast, impressed with OW.

  • I paid full price because I couldn't wait.

I hooked up a 2tb hard drive and WiFi files to it from multiple sources and watch the vids later on my tv at my leisure. I don't stream to it.

I found the iview function good but the YouTube terrible (about the same as appletv YouTube function [of course airplay to appletv via iPad for example is excellent as we all know, but I am not talking about that])

I can not get Dolby or dts via my amplifier but that might be due to the mkv itself.

Kudos to Officeworks - I ordered this at about 8:00 am this morning and it was delivered and up and running before 4:00 pm. And delivery was free. Not done very much with it yet but first impressions are very good. Thanks again OP.

Thanks OP for the deal! Also ordered around 8am and just got the package delivered 5 mins ago :-)

    • Similar story. Ordered online 8pm on Wednesday 28th and delivered Friday arvo 30th to Perth. I'm guessing unit was actually sent from a Perth source as although no sender address per se, there was a "Despatch Date" of 30th (Friday) on the delivery label.

I got one before, I hate it, there is NO SKIP FUNCTION. You can only skip via FF which is horrible.

I would urge you not to buy it, it's really clumsy for LAN browsing too.

Mine is for sale, too frustrating. Contact me I will do a good price ;)

  • Can anyone tell me if there is any benefit besides the WiFi compared to the WD Elements Play I currently have which has a 2TB hard drive? It plays every single thing I get from numerous sources, but I need to load it to the drive, run a USB cable or any another media that connects via usb works on this unit. So just the WiFi is the extra on this unit? Thanks….

  • Just my personal opinion,
Being a very popular device and hearing from everyone, I made my mind to try but I found it sluggish, it jsut never finishes compiling media library and while compiling, it affect other services which makes user do nothing but to wait. Menu options does not respond just because of stupid scanning of media files.

I'd many expectations from the device but it has let me down. The only good thing about the device is the supported formats. I'll have to look at boxee or roku.

    • Have you got 'Get Info' turned on? Because if you have a butt-load of files that will take a very long time, and you don't really need it. Plus you can use programs like 'Hubflow' or 'thumbgen to do it manually.
      Mine runs very smoothly.

      • Yes, I turned the option under device 'media scanning/discovery' off and it stopped scanning. I will try the suggested ones.

Also noticed that normal youtube app doesn't play any video and keeps loading though 'youtube videos' could play. Any ideas there?
        Thanks

  • Really couldn't find a compelling reason to buy this when my wdtv live with a $10 dlink adapter has served me well for past two years.

    • From what I can see, UI on newer model much nicer. Not sure about the rest. I feel our older model rather sluggish, and no ABC iView.

      • But you cannot use custom firmware on this. WD TV Live old version is better for tinkerers. I got one I customize all my UMSP with whatever source I like to play eg. Apple Trailers. You can't with Streaming version

  • We bought the US model and with Unblock-us watch US content streamed from Hulu and Netflix

  • Like to know if this model plays rmvb files.
    Hope someone can advise.
    Thanks.

  • Hey Guys,

I want a player to do 2 things.

    1. Stream/play all my media from my PC to my TV.
    2. Access US TV/Netflix/Hulu+ etc

Can this do both those things? I assume I need a VPN for the US stuff. Do I need to flash the OS or anything like that?

Any advantage to getting the US model that someone mentioned?

  • I have one of these and it's been great but as a heads up for those with older TV sets, this model doesn't have Component output.

    • Good Point. Component with HDMI only older version has it, its better to have it rather than none like the streaming version hence I don't recommend streaming version.

      • It's only 'better to have it' if you need it… in which case it's a very important point. But for people without older tvs, it's a pretty moot point.

  • May be worth adding just noticed on my PS3 under "Whats New" WD cash back offer of $50 on WD Live Streaming Media Player purchased be for Christmas. Brings it down to $49.00. Im off to OW.

    • Never heard of this promotion. Link?

    • I had looked into the WD ad on the PSN last week and I couldn't find any information. Just a video for WD products. And there is no mention of it anywhere on the web which is a pain.

If you can confirm this is real LMB, this just went from "tempting" to "MUST BUY!!1"

Will try and recheck tonight though and update

    • Thanks mate, updated

  • Maybe get JB to price match Officeworks. They have it listed for $135.

    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac…

    • JB Hi-Fi Chatswood would not price match. Apparently OfficeWorks in North Sydney/Mosman/Dee Why is out of their "local radius".

Saw the $50 cashback thing and just ordered one. I don't know what the hell I just bought.

    • Hahaha, it's awesome don't worry

    • +1

bought one, don't even know what is this thing for…..

  • Does this receiver do IPTV streaming as I like to watch some tv channels that stream on the Internet .Does the receiver have a web browser that support flash websites.

  • Just got it, connect to my HDTV. But it says my all my mkv files not supported (~100 of them). How come?

  • I think I might return mine, cannot get a single file to stream from my PC despite hours of network troubleshooting, and the TV streaming/response form the unit is painfully slow. Xbox live is much better, and seems much less painful to transfer files to USB.

Scouring forums, it appears that I'm not the only one.

    More trouble than it's worth.

    • Give Serviio a go…I've seen it fix many a network issue ;)

  • Cant say ive had ny issues. Played MKV's, AVI's, even 3D BD ISO's(obviously only in 2d) with no issues. Only thing it cant do is playback BD iso's in folders. You have to find the stream you want to play, but i have no intention of using it for that anyway.Otherwise pretty decent for $50.

Has anyone recieved their giftcard yet?

  • Expired now. Cashback that is.

  • I bought one but unfortunately couldn't get it to connect to my wireless network. Returned it today for a refund.
