The problem, as I understand it, is that Book Depository build in 'shipping' to their prices based on where you are (internet-wise) when you're looking at prices. That is why I always compare all-up costs before pushing the button on any purchase. I tend to use www.booko.com.au as my first port of call - I don't think that I've seen www.printsasia.co.uk listed as one of the options on that site though…
I've started to notice that TBD's prices aren't as competitive as they previously were after being bought by Amazon.
^ Agreed. Edit: I did a couple of searches on some books of interest to me .. with shipping the prices are either slightly cheaper or slightly more expensive. Depends on the book I guess. Shipping under $100 looks like 2.75, so not too bad.
Really?
I'm from England and the first time I came here one of the things that hit me is the inflated cost of books.
(this only applies to a big reader, but…) don't look at the individual book prices - look at what how many you could get for £100.
From experience, most middle-of-the-road books by reasonably known authors come to between £5-£10, where they'd cost ya about $30-$40ish in-store here (at least in SA - perhaps other states are different).
So you could get between 10-20 books for £100 on average (let's call it an optimistic $170 with the exchange rate) instead of 10-20 for about $300-$600 (assuming all books averaged out to the lower end of my estimation at $30 - if they were $40, then they'd come to $400-800).
That's a pretty substantial saving - don't knock it!
Edit: before all the idiots start on me with "Well go back home if you don't like it here blah blah blah, I love Australia - I chose to live here and liked it of my own accord as opposed to was born here and was somewhat forced to like it, I just think this is an awesome deal and that they are really overpriced in-store).
Apples and Oranges.
Don't compare with physical store. Almost everyone here knows that unless there's a magical sale going on, there's always a cheaper alternative online.FYI, He was comparing with http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/
And according to him, the prices are not too far off than what's on offer at printasia."unless there's a magical sale going on, there's always a cheaper alternative online."
…but not from Australian retailers…online included. The two websites which you see as similar are both British…
Personally, I think this is a comparatively good deal.
Yes, they're not Australian retailers, they're both British.
So?
Where in the world it is written that you have to buy from an Australian retailer to get a bargain in Australia?
Heck, sometimes I get my books from amazon US.If you think this is a good deal, then good for you.
All I'm saying is, if you want to compare, compare to what's available from Australia and that includes online stores that are based overseas.
Big W sell their fairly good size (at least at my local store in WA) adult fiction catalogue at 35% off RRP. I got a Cussler novel for the train home for $12.99 instead of $19.99. Pretty good deal for a brick and mortar if you ask me.
That is not a bargain.. I can get free shipping from book depository.co.uk… and that too at lower prices.
Perhaps you should offer free shipping regardless of the amount spent considering book depository does and they are generally very cheap.
