I'm just here setting up my armchair and getting my popcorn ready to watch all the "bird flu is gonna kill us all" chicken little usual suspects to neg this deal and spray hate in the comments.

FWIW it seems like a good deal and nothing to lose.

The difference between US and local poultry husbandry is a wide gap. Just get proper info from local poultry orgs & forums.
Plus American chooks lay eggs on the opposite side.

This gives me an idea for a book.

    "Using chatgpt with extra steps!"

what in the AI is that front cover picture

    • +5

Might not apply to this book (based on the reviews?) but there's a bunch of AI generated books showing up on Amazon that are printed on demand or for download. Example is an AI foraging guide with no drawings/ pictures - definitely not dangerous at all

Theres a special place in hell for anyone who raises chickens in a suburban backyard. Especially if the backyard is big enough that they put the chickens all the way down the back; far enough away that the owners cannot hear them but close enough to neighboring properties who have to put up with constant noise

    • +8

who have to put up with constant noise

I have two neighbours with chickens and have no idea what you are talking about. Roosters make noise, chickens are mostly silent. Certainly the small noise they do make is a lot quieter than the dozens of local Cockatoos, Lorakeets, Kookaburras, Magpies, Crows etc you get on any given day of the week.

Tbh I’d rather all my neighbours have chickens instead of dirt bikes, lawn mowers, noisy old air conditioners, power tools, toddlers etc.

But that special place in hell for chicken owners? I think I know where that is, you go through it on the way down to go see the people with pet dogs that bark all day and night.

Since when do chickens make noise? We have 3 and never hear a peep out of them! Especially compared to plenty of dogs in the area….

    We wonder if this includes ……. … … .. …… …. …….. …. …. ……. .. ….. …. .. ….. ………

  • There’s nothing in the book about dispatching, terminating, harvesting or whatever you call it when you get a chicken and convert it into a tasty snack. If you grab this book expecting tips and tricks for that, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

  • Anything for raising chickens in the front yard?

    • Just rotate your house. Where's ya work ethic?

  • Thought it was a "choose your own adventure" book and was mildly excited for a minute.

  • Although it's not obvious at first, but owning backyard chickens is really quite cruel. Firstly, it is only female chickens who lay eggs (obviously) so all males are ground up in macerators on their first day of life. Secondly, we have bread chickens to lay an egg nearly every day from once a month. This puts incredible strain on their bodies and they often suffer from malnutrition especially if you do not feed their eggs back to them to replace the lost nutrients. There are rescue chickens up for adoption that have been rescued from animal agriculture available in many parts of Australia. If you do get a rescue hen, then it's always in their best interest to feed their eggs back to them.

You'd have to be a certifiable psychopath to choose to raise animals in an environment where they'll naturally acclimate to you, only to then slaughter them or have them slaughtered for your consumption.
