Good Quality Solid Wood Bed Frame?

Hi all, hoping for some suggestions from the community. Our 15 year old freedom furniture bed frame is due to be relegated to the spare room and we are now in the market for a replacement. Visited a few stores at the weekend (freedom, 40 winks etc) and was blown away with how everywhere has moved toward light hollow laminate or veneer. The freedom stuff is completely different level quality wise compared to what it was in the past. Really cheap look and feel to it in person, doesn’t have the same build quality.
Not exactly looking for a bargain but suggestions on where people go for good quality wooden bedroom furniture without needing to take out a mortgage ? Based in Melbourne. Ideally not plywood either

We had a look at https://theacaciatree.com.au/collections/timber-bed-frames at the weekend also. The solid models seem really well build but the pricing seems high.

  • Quokka possibly best value

  • Theres about 10 bed/furniture places along Frankston/Dande road with a wide selection of quality and prices

From here they look cheap and nasty too. But you've seen em in person…

    IMWO - Quality costs $$

  • Good Quality Solid Wood Bed Frame?

What do you mean by quality; type of material? workmenship?

    Really cheap look

That's the design, more like personal preference.

That all depends on your budget.

And then the next question, quality mattress :)

    • Yes, all of the above, real wood with good grain and feel, that is built solid.
What I mean by cheap look was not related to style ( I actually don’t mind the look of the freedom stuff on the website) I was referring to when you stand next to it you can see that the laminate or imitation wood is so clearly fake it just looks wrong. Then knock on the “wood” and everything is hollow.

Some of their frames are under $2k. I don't think that's would be considered 'high' for solid timber bed frames if they are built well. I looked at them recently but not being in Mel made the price less like-able (ended up with a sleeping duck metal framed bed base instead)

    • In the end we went for the Yakka Luna and I agree, having looked at it in the display room, it is a good price for a solid piece.

$2.5k for The Acacia Tree- Valkyrie Bed Frame Fully Solid Australian Hardwood - Made in Australia seems decent value.

I purchased a Queen size fabric lined bed with drawers from Domayne. Made in Malaysia from memory, for about $1k. I was very surprised how well it's made.

I just shag on the floor so the bed frame doesn't break…..

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • make sure you invest in proper biking jackets so you dont get friction burn

    • It's harder to handcuff someone to the floor though.

  • I am on the same boat and been looking at icon by design. Loved their designs but prices are a bit steep. I guess that’s what you need to pay for quality made furniture.

    • Thanks for the suggestion, had not heard of them previously . I did visit on your suggestion and did like their stuff but they were more expensive than acacia for an imported product. I supported local made in the end. Hopefully quality holds up when it arrives

    • Depending mainly on the price of the wood, the icon uses oak and walnut, which are better materials for furniture production. A lot of solid wood furniture uses Southeast Asian rubberwood, a material that is glued together.

      • note:

        • Solid oak / walnut is used everywhere on the
headboard, except for the square panels which are a combination of solid pine and oak veneer

        • The side and end panels are a combination of solid pine and oak veneer, and the frame at the end of the bed is solid oak

  • The Koala Paddington bed base is on sale atm.

These types of frames are great because it has a flat base. This is what you want for foam/latex mattresses. Stay away from slats.
