Is there anything similar, but way cheaper?

I picked up a second-hand Blackview mobile phone with Flir camera for $150. Works as a IR camera, power-bank, and spare phone. Caterpillar also make a phone with IR.

Which particular model and where did you manage to purchase from? Keen to get one to check my home for insulation gaps

    • +4

I got the tooltop T7 from aliexpress and it is fantastic. It has the same sensor as the P2 Pro and works with multiple apps and only cost ~$170 on sale.
Edit: It clearly shows insulation gaps in the wall and roof, and I can easily see the location of hot water pipes in the walls and heating on walls where the split system is pointing.

Please note: This product is an Android version.

Despite it being USB-C, this will most likely not work with the iPhone 15 lineup.

  • +4

I made a purchase when it was about $310 incl. GST, but Banggood won't ship my item after a month and despite it being back in stock. I ended up buying the Mileseey 256 for just over $200 (no macro lens), which works fine for a bit of HVAC but I wouldn't use it for board-level diagnostics without a macro lens. It works with infiray's software too.

I've had issues with Banggood as well, had to get paypal involved to get a refund. won't ever buy from them again.

    • +1

I've bought a number of things from BG in the past and never had any major issues. I had bought my kids a remote controlled car, and one of the parts failed on it shortly after. I got them to send me a new part to replace it (they wanted a video of it etc). They kind of just chucked something in the mail to me with some other bits and pieces to replace the part, and it's like they didn't have the time to ask me specifically which one.

Colleague at work has one of these (we are elec eng's). It is really quite amazing for the size and price. We have handheld thermal cams for fault finding but one day he came along and showed us the P2 Pro and it had way higher resolution than our expensive handheld units.

Edit: I have an iPhone with Lightning connector. Although you can buy the P2 Pro with a Lightning connector, the newer iPhones use USB-C right? So I am reluctant to buy one if I upgrade my phone in the next year or two.

    • +1

Infiray makes it explicitly clear the usb-c version will not work with iPhone 15. You can use lightning version with usb-c adapter (or extension cable) for iPhone 15.

    i bought a UNI-T UTI260B (256x192) + macro lens for USD $226.77 incl GST a month or two ago.

    • -1

Thats a good price, could you please DM me where from?

    • cool. Where from?

    • +3

I got mine from https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006706804766.html in June. It doesn't seem to be available any longer. After sale coupons & GST I ended up paying USD $226.77 according to my order history. Other sellers might have it at a similar price.

IIRC, it has an Infiray sensor in it. I just wanted a standalone unit, no mucking around with phones

  • Has anyone gone from a FLIR with MSX to one of these? Did you miss MSX?

    • +1

MSX is absolutely necessary for the lowest end 80x60 resolution thermal sensors. With a 160x120 FLIR sensor, I find that most thermal images don't need MSX augmentation. This product has a 256x192 sensor. If it's at least as good as the FLIR, I wouldn't say you'd miss MSX.

      • +1

I have the Flir One Pro and I have to say that even with the MSX the low resolution and frame rate are quite annoying. I see some of these Chinese high resolution high frame rate thermal cameras and get a lot of envy

      • +1

MSX is nice to have (but not really necessary as you say) at 160x120 but having to constantly fiddle with the offset at closer distances does get tiring.

Looking at P2 Pro reviews on YouTube, the image really is pretty good, and the macro lens is the sweetener. I just ordered it, time to leave 8.7Hz behind!

The purchase tracked on TopCashBack at $30.90, hopefully it gets approved fine.

    • +1

I have a bunch of thermal cameras including Flir One Pro and Infiray P2 Pro. The added resolution of the P2 Pro means that it is easy to see what you are looking at in most cases. The advantage of MSX is when things are relatively indistinguishable in temperature — which begs the question, why are you using a thermal camera at all. So no, not missed in 95% of cases, and a minor loss for the other 5%.

I had mixed experiences with Banggood. My first few orders I had no problem. Then I bought a phone and that didn't turn on I I got a very fast refund. But few orders later and I got a bunch of items that never arrived (since 2022) and it was a freaking nightmare to get my money back. Honestly, not worthy. I most certainly do not want to go through the same experience. Idk if they changed their customer service since, but I surely won't be checking that.

  • +1

I was incorrect, on saying the deal was expired.

It was under the coupons once I had to move the item to cart. for $199 USD.
Was $350.21 with priority shipping on my 28 Deg CC.

  • I bought a Ulefone Power Armor 19T Thermal Imaging Camera FLIR® Rugged Phone 17GB RAM +256GB which came with a FLIR camera anyway which worked out quite cheap for it.

    what am I missing?

$344 for a niche phone thermal camera that you can stick on your phone once, then never use again? or maybe at most show off to your mates once at work (like one comment says) and forget you have it??

    • +1

What you're missing is that not everyone is like you. You might only use it once and never again, but other people can have more use for it.

      • -2

You might only use it once and never again, but other people can have more use for it.

        any examples?

as I said very niche. not everyone has some smart way to check for pests or drain blockage or something by using thermal camera. would like to hear some common everyday examples of how to use it so it has $344 value. the price is just so high.

        • +2

would like to hear some common everyday examples of how to use it so it has $344 value.

This is not a common everyday tool aimed at the general consumer. It is a specialist tool like a multimeter, bench PSU, oscilloscope, etc. If you can't think of uses for it, it definitely isn't meant for you.

If you work on electronics (or it's a hobby) you can easily locate hotspots on a PCB to narrow down shorts or faulty components. If you work with electrical panels you can quickly spot circuits that are carrying more current than they should be. If you work with HVAC you can find leaks or efficiency problems. If you work with plumbing you can narrow down the location of e.g. a small leak above a plaster ceiling based on moisture.

          • -2

@eug: so I'm assuming you bought one and know how to use it? (I don't)

then I can ask you, is it actually worth $344?

because OP provided little details, it almost seems like regular price also based on what others paid for something similar in the comments. e.g. $344 is like inflated retail price and what I expect to see on the shelf in a shop for something like this.

            • +2

              @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm:

then I can ask you, is it actually worth $344?

"Worth" really depends on the individual. For you, I'd say it's absolutely not worth it. For me it's not really worth it as I already have two others, but the higher resolution, frame rate, macro lens, and not having to keep another device charged is enough to make me go for it anyway. It'll be my 5th thermal camera and hopefully the last one for many years.

It's only very recently where you could get specs like this for a three digit price.

e.g. $344 is what I expect to see on the shelf in a shop for something like this.

It costs $469 locally. If my cashback gets approved, this will be about $310.

              • @eug:

this is what I was missing.

$350 hungies still a lot for me.

            • +1

              @n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm:

so I'm assuming you bought one and know how to use it? (I don't)

You buy it eg. when you have a house or multiple houses to renovate or insulate. Or looking for (hot water) plumbing.

You use it by sticking into your android device and looking at the picture on your screen to see what areas are warmer. Eg. if you see such spot on your external wall, you may want to insulate it. I can imaging you can also check if there's a living creature hiding in the dark. The world's your oyster.

Yes, it's a niche thing, but very practical and easy to use. Whether it's worth $350 - up to you. But you'll probably pay much more for a person with a professional version of such device.

              • @pizzaguy: ok thanks for explaining further pizzaguy.

tbh because it’s usb/c and for phones I was expecting it to be more of a “cool to have” item that is easily broken because it attaches via usb.
kind of like lenses for your phone.

Ive heard of thermal cameras pro ‘s use but thought they are basically not affordable by normal people.

                • +1

@n3ck3ntry8bort0rgasm: I used my Flue thermal camera for house inspections which can help save me from ordering B&P unnecessarily. Even one time would more than make up for it as the cost of an inspection usually runs several hundred to over a grand, and if you also factor in spotting problems rather than buying the wrong property, you could save tens of thousands in potential repairs. So value wise it's actually ok for house hunters.
