Using Microwave Turns off Wi-Fi

When we turn our microwave on the Wi-Fi goes really slow.

Think it's leaking a ton of microwaves? Bin it you think, they not supposed to do that right? Haha. This is an inverter microwave.

    use 5ghz?

    • It says 2.4g on wifi name

Connect to 5 GHz wifi SSID if available. Otherwise need to login into router setting and turn on or set 5 GHz SSID. Your devices should only connect to 5 GHz. Or change the channel for 2.4 GHz at least. Channel options start from Channel 36 and above (change this). Maybe move the router further away from microwave will also help.

        • Why is it better for devices (I assume PCs, TV, tablets, telephones) to connect to 5ghz over 2.4ghz? If that's the case then is it a good idea to disable the 2.4ghz channel from broadcasting?

            @x x: 5GHz is faster.
            2.4GHz signal reaches further.
            Not all devices support 5GHz.

If your router allows it, combine both and everything should just work.

Edit the network name to 10GHz, problem solved…

        /s

        • Nah … just move the router to the second floor while the microwave is in first floor … :P

But why is OP using Wifi when using the Microwave???

  • +2

If you google "microwave interfering with wifi" you'll find plenty of info on why it happens, potential adjustments you could make to your wifi that might lessen the impact.
eg lower number wifi channels for your 2.4ghz ssid, using 5ghz wifi where possible, repositioning your wifi (or microwave) etc etc)

There's no guarantee a replacement microwave wouldn't also have similar electromagnetic radiation leakage (eg a popular lg model on here I'm sure has had reports of it )

All microwaves have huge amount of leakage, it's nothing new. It's also not dangerous (unless you put your head in there, but it's the same danger as putting your head in a hot oven - your head gets cooked).

Check if your wifi router has an option to use 5ghz and switch to that.

As others have already said, it's because of your WiFi using the 2.4GHz frequency.

    You can upgrade to WiFi 5 (802.11ac), WiFi 6 (802.11ax), WiFi 6E or WiFi 7 (802.11be).

WiFi 5 routers have a 5GHz frequency. They use WiFi 4 for the 2.4GHz frequency.

WiFi 6 routers operate on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz.

    6E operates on 5GHz, 2.4GHz and 6GHz.

The higher the frequency, the worse range and wall penetration abilities are, but higher speeds, because of the increased frequency.

The converse is true for lower frequency bands.

The connecting device and WiFi router have to support the same WiFi standard, otherwise the newer device will downgrade until they find a matching standard that is supported by both.

Most devices in 2024 support WiFi 5 (ac), higher end stuff support 6 and 6E (ax), flagship stuff supports WiFi 7 (be).

Check all your WiFi devices for what WiFi standards they support and you can make a decision on what router to buy.

    • Somewhat correct.

Microwave ovens use frequencies in the range of 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, at the higher end of 2400 MHz. If you stick to channels 5 and below, this issue is resolved. The only problem after this is if there are too many neighboring Wi-Fi SSIDs overlapping with the channel you're using. In typical suburban areas, this isn't much of an issue. In unit blocks, it can be. Most of the time, it's not a problem, regardless. With other router settings, there are many ways around this problem as well.

How close are they? Normally, keeping the wifi router well away from the oven is enough.

    • Like 3m

Just move the router to the second floor while the microwave is in first floor … :P

    LG Neochef I presume?

  • Yeah we get the same thing with our Panasonic inverter microwave (the previous one, also a Panasonic, did that too)

Is your modem inside your microwave? Jk :) I'm guessing try to have the modem to not the same power outlet as the microwave.

    Microwave Turns off Wi-Fi

Payback… use WiFi smart switches to turn off the microwave

    Time to call the ghostbusters

Is your router in the microwave

  • We get the same thing with our microwave - turn it on and the WiFi goes if you're in front of it.

As others have mentioned, it's expected… Wouldn't really worry about it.

  • Just use the least congested channel between 1 and 5.

Switch to 5.8ghz wifi instead and you won't have any issues.
Also get your microwave checked for RF leaks. Or say goodbye to your sperm count.

  • I used to have that problem, hell sometimes the Clothes Dryer would have a similar effect. Went to a mesh system to get around the issue.

  • Buy a mesh wifi system.. lots of great options these days.
