PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The Penn Battle III 4000 - now stronger, smoother and more durable than ever before. By matching our proprietary CNC Gear Technology, HT-100 carbon fibre drag system, and a Full Metal Body, the Battle III has the guts and drag to handle serious abuse. The Battle III series has a model for every angler, at an incredible value.

This is a solid mid range reel with included carbon fibre drag. Even at it's RRP it's already good value. At 50% off, it's very very cheap. I've bought 2. Now I just need to find a deal on some good braid…which will end up being almost as much as the reel itself.

  • what size is best for surf fishing? do all the models have the exact same features?

    • +2

Bigger is generally better for surf fishing.

      • thanks frondono.. are these reels beginner friendly?

        • +1

Both 5000 and 6000 ok for surf fishing but as mentioned, bigger is better.
Also a good quality reel suitable for all fishos

        • +1

There's reely not much to reels.

This one is pretty good quality with a decent drag. It's not really designed to haul in tuna, but should be more than enough for 99% of estuary use.

If you're doing casual surf fishing it should be decent. If you're a beginner, you probably won't be whipping out a 12ft beach rod anyway.

          • @PCHammond: my next question was should i get a 12ft beach rod ><D as a beginner? and if so do you have any models you recommend to go well with the Penn battle 6000 i just ordered one thanks man!

            • +1

@JURBA: If you want to, why not?

Bear in mind they are a pain to store and transport. But if that's what you enjoy then go for it.

I don't have any recommendation for beach rods. I only do boat and the occasional estuary shore fish

              • @PCHammond: thanks man.. i got a 5000 also because.. i just heard off a yt video it might be less bulky than the 6000, but holds less line, which is fine by me. And two rods are always better than 1 ><D.

@JURBA: For a beginner surf caster, i recommend a shorter, say 10ft rod, youll often get as much distance from it due to the improved control/handling.

Nothing wrong with a a 12 ft though and there are alot around.

@Sandaz: thanks man! great advice ^^ will try find one

Are you using baits or lures? What size rod do you have? I find 4000 with 20lb braid paired with a 9ft 5-8kg rod to be prefect for metal lures and for bait.

  • whats the shortest length in ft rod should do you recommend I pair up with this reel for surf fishing?

    • +1

      Probably 10'6".

      • Awesome thanks JaxSantiago ^^D

  • can anyone recommend good braid for this reel for surf fishing on a 10'6"-12" rod?

    • +1

Ebay braid is decent. Much cheaper compare to Japanese braids at BCF.

      • Thanks for the tip!^^

Have a look on aliexpress too.

      • Good idea thankyou!

        • Amazon warehouse have a 8000 and 10000 reel for a little more.

I'm of the opinion to buy brand name braid, so that you know it casts well and you have confidence of its breaking point.

No use catching a good fish only for the line to fail unexpectedly. Same goes with terminal tackle.

      • Good point! Ive lost a few fish in the past due to line breaking! Thanks

Push the boat out and buy quality braid.I use 50lb.as it's easier to handle & knot.If you're going to BCF the Daiwa J X8 (8 strand) is good value.Keep it away from your fingers though when fishing as it's capable of slicing easily.I've also been using Yellow TufLine XP.Good luck!

    • Good tip! Dont want to slice my fingers off hehe

  • Whats the general price range for a good qualutu braid? And high quality?

    • +1

Depends on your application and line length etc

I like Daiwa J Braid, but I chuck alot of lures and try and go light. If you're chucking heavy baits with heavy sinkers, you won't need to worry about castability as much.

I also like multi colour but that's really more of a gimmick

I'm going with the Sufix braid pack:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/861096

I have ordered 2 packs. Going to respool some other reels too and probably upsize the braid (eg: 30lb on a 4000 sized reel on a 20lb rod).

      • awesome pack.. will all these braids work well on 5000 & 6000 on a 10-12ft surf rod? to catch fish in the surf/beach

        • +1

Should work well. If anything some may be a little heavy/strong
But it depends on your rod as well and what fish you are targeting.

          • @PCHammond: Thanks for all the tips & advice mate.. cant wait to get out fishing again! Great weather for it, in viictoria anyways hehe

  • Any rod recommendations for the 6000 reel ?
