Why Is The Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus So Expensive?

My S9+ is finally at its end of life and I'm looking to get a S23+. I'm so confused by why it's so expensive though. Have I missed the boat with stock being cleared at the eofy sales? Wasn't too keen on the S24+ due to not being snapdragon.

Edit to clarify - confused why the price isn't much lower compared to the newer model. Should I just get a S24+ or a pixel pro instead?

Same reason my ole favourite Ford Falcon 1976 XB is now $265k, but I owned one in 1981 for $5000 :P

I don't think the S23 is a collectors item mate so not sure what you are going for here.

I think 7ekn00 is pointing out that things sell for whatever people will pay for them.

thats like me saying, my Commodore 64 was only $100 back in the 80s and now its over $1000….

  • I tried to sell a brand new, unopened 256gb S23+ for $1300 (with Office works receipt) about 4 months before the S24 series was released and got massively low balled and many scammers came at me, I ended up taking it back and getting a refund.

I bought it as I had giftcards that where going to expire, refund came back as giftcards with fresh expiration dates.

See if you have any access to corporate or education portal. I could never imagine paying retail for a Samsung phone with the amount of frankly bonkers vouchers stacks with Samsung direct some people here work out

Samsung deals seem to have slowed a bit. I've been watching deals to replace a S20FE.

To speculate as to the reason:

    • Copying Apple's pricing
    • Minimal competition at the higher end
    • Pushing users to purchase directly
    • Inflation

As mentioned, I'd be waiting for a deal where I could stack offers. Be aware though, if you have issues, Samsung are awful to deal with and were most complained about to NSW Fair Trading in 2023.

      Just earlier this month https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/855680

Though yeah, you’d be better off waiting for a good deal on the S24.

    • Very helpful, thank you.

I reckon they have been trying to follow Apple pricing to market their flagship models with flagship pricing. Probably what drew me to get the Pixel 8 Pro when it came out last year. No ragrets.

Also worth having a look at the S23+ product page or click in the "Related Products" box on the right.

  • Because Huawei &Co were proclaimed Enemy of the state. That's why Samsung &Co can bend the customer over and shove their old crap where there is no natural light.

I has this same dilemma with the base S23 256gb. Bit of a gamble, but I'm relying on price protection on my card to get my monies back.

You answered your question: Snapdragon vs Exynos

i swear the popularity is factor into the price being so expensive and not the device itself. you can get an a3 phone yeah less spec but thats what under $400. it pisses me off that the most common phone is so expensive, you would think the more made the lower the price.

I know i'm stating the obvious here but, if people refused to pay these prices, they would drop……..

  • The primary reason is probably exchange rate aud to usd not that great.

  • I had a very loyal Note 8 that finally gave up. I was trying to get an S23U+ but could not justify the price. The option was to wait for the S25 instead.

I could not wait so went for a Pixel 8 Pro. Happy with the phone so far, great camera which is one of the most important features for me.

    Just my 2 cents.
