Huh, they just had this deal last weekend too.

  • Anyone know the max historical rate for booking.com cashback? 10% happens a bit between cr and sb

    • seen as high as 18% with agoda/booking.com

    • There was like 25% cashback with bank bonus last week, cant remember if that was Agoda or Trip

  • The problem is that it adds 10% to genius price

Booking.com cashbacks are so dodgey… the ACCC needs to look into it.

The pricing they show you when going through a cashback link vs normally is different

I always double check both and often end up not using the cashback since the price is higher with cashback

    • It's a pain, but I've successfully price matched.
Hopefully my cashback will track even with the price change.

    • Yeah, I do notice that sometimes, but not all the time. It also varies as well. Same date and same place but when I tried at different times/days, the price was not increased with activated cashback

Booking.com is frequently significantly cheaper when you start at a price comparison site, and then choose the link to booking com.

I've seen discounts larger than 10% this way, so check the price with booking.com first, then the price when clicking through from CashRewards, then the price when clicking through from a price comparison site.

The price comparison sites I know of are TripAdvisor.com and Vio.com. Occasionally you can do a double-hop, either TripAdvisor->Vio->Booking.com or Vio->TripAdvisor->Booking.com, and sometimes that can give you an even larger discount.

Also, try making the last link to Agoda.com instead of booking.com, or any of the alternate sites offered by Vio and TripAdvisor, if the price shown looks better.

There is one difficulty with this: Booking.com has the best filters for selecting what type of room you want, e.g. "non-smoking room, private bathroom, two single beds". If you're after a room as specific as this, you can't filter that well on Vio and TripAdvisor. So find the hotel and room type you want first on Booking.com, and then search for that hotel through TripAdvisor and/or Vio, then click through to Booking.com/Vio/whoever, and locate the room type in the list to find the discounted price.

Of course, if you use TripAdvisor and/or Vio, you won't get 10% cashback, so the discount will have to be higher than 10% to be better. But it's an instant discount, no waiting for an extended period, and no worry it might not track.

CashRewards do have cashback if booking with TripAdvisor, but apparently that's only if TripAdvisor offers you a booking, not if you click through to another site.

    • Example: 1-8 January 2025, Apa Hotel Kiba Tokyo, "Twin room non-smoking"

      800 AUD at Booking.com
      720 AUD through Tripadvisor->Booking.com

This is an instant discount of 10% on the full amount, note that CashRewards "excludes taxes/fees" from the amount their 10% discount is calculated on. And no waiting to get the cashback, no worries it won't track.

      • Have you booked through vio before , they seem about 10-15% cheaper than all other booking sites , almost seems too good to be true

When I recently made some bookings, I can't remember if I knew about using TripAdvisor and Vio at that time. Looking at the bookings in my emails, they're from Booking.com and Agoda, I'm pretty sure you pay whoever you clicked through to, not TripAdvisor or Vio. I imagine TripAdvisor and Vio get a small kickback if you click through their website, same as if you search for something with Google and click the sponsored result to purchase it.

          they seem about 10-15% cheaper

          (1) always check the currency is AUD. If you can't see AUD anywhere, assume it's in USD and figure out how to select AUD.
          (2) always add the booking to the shopping cart, and check the price in the shopping cart. I can be higher than the price you were shown. If that price looks okay, use PayPal as the payment method, and check the price that PayPal shows you. I've seen sneaky extra charges added just before going to Paypal, I think that was with Booking.com.

Edit: I must have used Vio or TripAdvisor when making my recent bookings. I posted about how they gave cheaper prices here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/858439

Looking at the booking confirmation emails I have, they're three days later that post, so I would have used TripAdvisor and/or Vio. And it was Booking.com that sneaked in an extra 5.30 AUD "service fee" that I didn't notice at the time.
