Please Help! Stitched up by Kogan Mobile as VoLTE Not Compatible

Hello, I'm in quite a bind and need someone's help. I changed yearly plan on Thursday to this Kogan $99 plan and went through the steps. After it was all set up, I have no service. I wait a few hours, do the on/off steps etc. before I go to a phone box to call kogan (no online support). They tell me that even though my phone has Volte (LG v30+) that it's not compatible on their network.

I was left stunned as nowhere on the page does it say that the network is ONLY Volte and Wi-Fi calling with NO other network available. Stitched up.

So I bought a new amaysim yearly sim from woolies hoping to port away, went through all those steps but come to find receiving an sms on that number is the only way to port out, but because my phone can't receive the text I can't port out and now stuck 'in limbo'. To make matters worse, I've just moved to Fitzroy and have no friends here I can ask for help and don't know anyone else here. I also don't want to just change my 15 year old number.

And so my longshot request is this - is anyone in the North of Melbourne able to let me use their kogan network capable Volte phone to receive a text so I can port away from kogan? Or does anyone have any ideas on how I could go about getting that text.

Thanks!

TL;DR Kogan stitched me up and I can't use my phone. Can anyone help me receive a text.

Buy a cheap Vodafone branded phone in a supermarket.

I think a 4G capacity phone should be able to receive SMS regardless of 3G network shutdown? I use a SIM in a 4G pocket Wifi modern often and always receive SMS without issue.

    • That's an idea, might also try cashies. Thanks.

      • Sometimes the SIM is faulty or not detected by your phone for some reason like positioning. Does your phone detect the network or as if no SIM was inserted?

When I leave a VF SIM in a no-VoLTE 4G phone, it can detect the network, receive SMS, access internet.

        • Never had problems with any other sim in my sim reader.

Well that raises another point or two

      1. OP has not mentioned what type of phone they have so we cannot advise further.
It must be a very old phone hence OP's problem not Kogan's.
So the proposed solution of buying a NEW Vodafone compatible phone is a good one.

And NO dont go to cashies.!!!!!!!!!

OMG! You will end up with another old non-compatible phone OP.
Im sure they have plenty of them

      1. Yes you can get in touch with Kogan to help you sort this out.

      2. Furthermore OP is incorrect in saying they were stitched up by Kogan.
Its up to the user to ensure they have a Vodafone compatibe phone.
I havent come across one that isnt except for an old 3G handset
Please dont blame others for you own stuff ups OP

PLEASE CHANGE THE TOPIC HEADING SINCE ITS YOUR STUFF UP OP !!!!!!!!!!!!!

      TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS!

Plenty of people here will help when you are honest, own up and dont blame others for your mistakes.

I just activated VoLTE on an age old Mi Max 2016 (with no 4G B28) and tested working to make a call with a VF SIM in it. I would have not been interested in doing so as I do have other better phones.

        From the OP

      • Whoah, calm down Plato and easy on the accusations. Maybe go back read it properly…oh wise one.

Can you borrow a friends phone, put the Kogan sim in that to get the sms and then port out?

    • Just moved to a new area away from my like 2 friends… And don't know anyone here haha. That's why I'm taking this hail Mary. Worst case I will have to get a new number.

A few people said they can get volte on LG v30+ with kogan so might just be something you need to enable on your phone? Is it on the latest update? Where did you buy the phone from?

I still have a V30+ and its enabled on Kogan (Vodafone)

The LG V30+ has volte and wifi calling enabled on Telstra. I know because I bought one for my mum in the recent JB hi-fi sale.

    • Thanks for that. I read through that but as I've moved in I haven't even set up home internet yet (I tried to but superloop said there were 3 devices connected to property and needed the correct nbn mac address to connect it or something so I left it, too late it seems). NFI why TF volte won't work with Vodafone when ive been using it on every other carrier I've used. I can't believe I bought a mobile phone sim that doesn't even farken work or has this many hoops to jump through.

      • You sound like you have a HFC connection. You'll end up with multiple Mac addresses if anyone has taken the black NBN NTD box previously. If you have the box they can grab the details from you, or they can sort out a new box if needed.

I got it from Jb Hi-Fi in September 2019. It has volte enabled its just not on kogans approved device list, which by the way is nowhere on the ad/ sign up page. Kogan only supply volte over vodaphone to certain phones and different to telstra. Completely dishonest to bury this in the t&c's imo.

Quick aside - on the phone told them I'd be taking them to the ombudsman for deceptive advertising since I can't get a refund because technically they provided the service they advertised. She tried back pedalling and asking me to hold so she could speak to her manager. Was like a magic word that completely changed her tune. Kogan, never again!

    • I'd be careful who you switch to, Telstra is blocking my 2023 Sony Xperia 5 V from using volte as well. Although it has it and works on other networks

  • phone has Volte (LG v30+)
I bought a new amaysim yearly sim from woolies hoping to port away

Does your V30+ support VoLTE on the Optus network though? You do know that like Vodafone has already done, Optus and Telstra will also be switching off their 3G networks soon, right?

    • None of this is relevant since the V30 uses the 4G network aswell.

Well now I'm not sure whether Ive ever used voLTE or I've just been using the 3g network for the last 5 years… But the damn Volte button is on in my dashboard settings. So confused… 😭

In mobile network settings for the kogan sim I have two options - set up access point names and network operators. Selecting that it just loads and times out. I'm just a layman with phones so I think I'm going to go to a phone repair shop.

    • I have the same phone but on ABB which uses Optus and no problems here (so far).

      • Because optus hasnt switched off 3g yet

Our 3G network is switching off from September 2024

        • I thought Volte was 4G?
Oh well, hopefully some Phone bargains will be had in October if it all goes squirrelly.

(edit, just sent '3' to '3498' which is the Optus compatibility checker and it reported that my phone wont be impacted by the 3G switch off)

          • @EightImmortals: There'a LTE 4G (data) and Voice Over LTE, which I learned recently. Yep, my phone can do the former but not the voice bit.

  • Sounds to me like a good excuse to introduce yourself to your new neighbours. Beats asking for a cup of sugar.

I know you are in Fitzroy, but they can't all be hipster douches.

    • They're old fogies lol…Nice people though. Lots of old money in Fitzroy.

Just get a new phone. Doesn't need to be expensive. Surely a low end 2024 phone will be better than a 2019 phone

Gee whiz, why didn't I think of that!? 😑

  • Based on the specs here, is this a device you purchased overseas? The v30+ seems to be setup the Hong Kong market.

As someone who used to work in mobile tech support, you’d be surprised how many international android phones don’t transfer well to other countries.

They said the phone was bought from JB-HiFi so it should work but clearly doesn't.

  • Have you activated VOLTE on with your phone?

    • What do you mean by 'activated'?

V30 has an awesome DAC…i loved that phone as an audio player, man it was good.
As to your dilemma, you and your descendants are now stuck permanently with Kogan for 1000 years.

    • This is the reason I can't let go. I listen to wired headphones daily, with an amp to power higher impedance headphones.

      😭

      • i had v20, v30, v40 - I feel your pain, that DAC is just epic.
I used mine in a car with a high end sound system..

But seriously, it's time to move on. Get an external DAC dude.

  • Did you try to use the hidden menu to enable volte?

    #546368#930#

Goto Field Test -> Modem Settings -> LTE Band Selection -> Select all bands.

Goto Field Test -> GPRS Volte/VoWifi -> UX -> display Volte icon.

Goto Field Test - > GPRS Volte/VoWifi -> ImS - > volte enabled is true.

    • No I'll try this now. I assume you dial these?

      Tried dialling, nothing happens

    • Wait will this only work with a working mobile service? OK yep tried on my mobile only belong sim, ussd code ran but then had connection issue or invalid mmi code.

I might have to go to the shops and get another cheap sim, be back soon.

      • VoLTE works on Boost and Woolies for my V30+ if that's any consolation, don't remember needing to do anything special

Ok so you guys aren't gonna believe this, I set up a Jb Hi-Fi sim on the telstra network with a new number as a temp, put it in after it was set up and somehow my kogan service magically turned on. Volte icon on dash, made a call to test and it works. I have no idea how/what or why this made it work.

But it's fickle, changed to the other Jb sim and it dropped out to no service but restarting seems to get it working. Thanks for your help and ideas everyone, I appreciate it.
