This or Catch connect, use next to no data, mainly just to keep my mums number active so she can receive and make a call or two every week

    • +9

If you don't need the data it comes down to which is the better network in your area for calls, Kogan = Vodafone, Catch = Optus. If they're both the same, and there is no plan to use the data, I would say, go for the cheapest.

      • +1

I agree! I think Catch might have slightly more convenient customer service as you can contact them online.

      • But if it does come down to data and Vodafone reception is not an issue then Kogan offers DOUBLE the data.

        MY STORY AND CHOICE…..
I was with Kogan for a couple of years (during COVID-19 Lockdowns) - I live in Sydney for the record.
But quickly dumped Kogan after COVID-19 Lockdowns when I started travelling up and down the NSW Coast on holiday trips.
I found that in some major coastal towns Vodafone had little or no reception.
Well whats the point of a "great deal" when you cant make or receive phones?
For me Optus (via Amaysim) has been flawless

      • +1

Catch = Optus, so a no brainer. Kogan it is..

        Optus is pants.

    • +1

Catch Connect just to avoid having anything to do with Kogan.

      • Not a fan of Kogan in general BUT I've had both internet and phone with them and customer service has been far superior to anything offshore I've experienced. It's actually Voda support anyway and each time I've called they've been fast, knowledgeable and helpful. Yes I know shock horror!

        • That’s a good point.

I’m sure there’s a JV between Them like Catch has with Optus

Keep ALDI Mobile in mind. Uses the Telstra network. $5 SIM starter pack has 60 day expiry, then $15 recharge extends it another year. Last time I went to ALDI they had a $17 and I think a $26 starter pack but I don't know how long they last, didn't have time to sus them out.

Be warned though, they really aren't great if you forget to turn off background data. ALDI Mobile Data costs 6c/MB but usage is measured per kilobyte and rounded up to the nearest kilobyte.

I've used ALDI SIM cards in a bunch of random Android devices for many years without issue (with Auto Updates and Background Data disabled) but accidentally left one in a relative's spare iPhone without turning off Background Data and it whittled $45 worth of credit down to $7 in less than a week. Auto app updates were turned off, no third-party apps were installed, it was just downloading screensaver photos and news articles and other useless crap in the background.

If your mum can connect to wi-fi at home most of that isn't an issue though, as you can set Android to disable background data and only update over wi-fi. I thought I'd done that with my relo's iPhone but must have turned off the wrong setting, as I'm unfamiliar with iOS.

      • +1

Yeah I have her on Aldi at the moment, some months she goes without anything, then blows the $15 over night grrrr. I think Catch might be the go as I think Optus is better in her suburb than Vodafail

        • I hear you. My mum's exactly the same, she was on ALDI for many years but used up all her credit in one night on three occasions. It wasn't an issue before but had to change her over to Kogan after she developed health issues. Running out of credit isn't an option when health is at stake.

    • +2

What about ALDImobile? $5 for the SIM, a recharge lasts 365 days and starts at $15 so it'll be $20 a year for the first year and $15 a year for subsequent years.

      • Can I port my same number into it?

Voucher must be purchased by 11:59PM AEST on 14/07/2024.

Voucher expires at 11:59PM AEST on 31/08/2024.

    • Cheers… exactly what I wanted to work out… might be worth it for me to buy this deal and recharge my service 20 days early.

  • What network does kogan use?

  • They intentionally made it $99 so that you couldn't stack the $5 welcome promo minimum spend $100 + APPLOVE code… smart.

    • +1

You think something so basic makes a person smart?

    • +1

      It's $99 because $99 looks a lot cheaper than $100

      • +7

        It is cheaper

        • +18

These are the insights I come to ozbargain for

    • You can always wait for the price to be rrp and use your code on that if you really want to use a code.

    • +1

I just used the APPLOVE code in the Kogan.com Android app to get a discount on a $198 purchase of 2 of these packs. Curiously the discount was $4.90 rather than the expected $5.00.

  • Where's the sale for medium size

  • +2

Can I apply this voucher to my current active Kogan account before it expires?
Or do I have to port out and back in via a $2 SIM?

It says "Voucher does not apply to subsequent recharges." so this might be a subsequent recharge for my current Kogan plan??

    • +1

It says "Voucher does not apply to subsequent recharges." so this might be a subsequent recharge for my current Kogan plan??

All this means is that if you leave it on auto recharge or try to renew without a code, you will be charged the full undiscounted price, which is $120.

If you buy another discounted voucher code a year later and it isn't restricted to new services only, you will still be able to use it on your existing Kogan Mobile service.

If you tap on Plan Information & Terms near the bottom of the listing, you'll find this.

Kogan Mobile’s Small 365 Offer is valid for new and existing Kogan Mobile customers.

You can use it with your existing Kogan Mobile SIM, but there's no roll-over. If you activate a new code, it will override your current plan right there and then, no refunds of any leftovers.

The fine print immediately above says you have to purchase it by the 14th of July and use it before the end of August.

If you don't, your money goes straight to Ruslan without them having to provide you with any service, though reports from OzBargainers suggest if you're lucky and get a nice rep on the phone, they may be willing to reissue the code.

      • Hi, thanks for that. I hadn't spotted the "Kogan Mobile’s Small 365 Offer is valid for new and existing Kogan Mobile customers" text.
The dates do align, so I think I'm good to go.
        Thanks again.

I'll purchase the same plan for my existing Kogan number. Do you click on "No Sim" option when you buy from them?

  • Currently on Catch, expires in January next year.

Please consider this comment is my bi-monthly caution against going Kogan.
constant dropouts. (especially bad with the rain in Brisbane today)

can you receive SMS while you are oversea (when I am not paying extra for international roaming)?

  • "Congratulations! You’ve earned $10.00 Rewards Credit on this order thanks to Kogan First"

When do I receive the $10 credit???

    • I received my $10 credit today

  • Anyone know, does Kogan SIM works with iPhone 6 ?

Lebara didn’t work with iPhone 6, Lebara said iPhone 6 is not a compatible device for them.

  • Has anyone purchased the Kogan plan? If I select the physical SIM option during purchase, will I still receive the eSIM? I'm interested in using the eSIM as my primary option but would like to have a physical SIM card as a backup. Thanks!

    • +1

You can’t have both - the service needs to know what sim or esim to connect to on the network - it can’t go to both

  • Anyone used the International Roaming packs with these plans? Having them and the fact I can have it as an eSIM are attractive. Also has anyone ever transferred their eSIM from one handset to another on Kogan - how easy was it?

    • +1

I haven't used the latest roaming packs but I was in China in late 2019 and activation of the overpriced 24hr roaming packs they had then was simple. Just had to SMS the kogan number to activate it.

For roaming packs, despite all the issues my parents have had, I would try Amaysim instead. Much better value and you can top them up and the current inclusions will rollover.

Though, if you have an esim in your phone, maybe try the 3HK roaming plans or TravelKon instead.

  • Can I stack this with the Ultimate gift card when buying the sim? (Ultimate everyone)

Anyone here connect their service only for it not to work? I rang kogan after I got the confirmation email and they said the Volte on my LGv30+ wasn't compatible with their network…
