I envy people without school kids.

    • +11

And my wife is a teacher, I'm totally stuffed. There's a reason I have to hunt for deals! :P

    • -8

      Nobody made you have kids

    • +2

Learn more relevant skills in a day travelling, than a week in a modern school.

      • +1

Yep. Took my kids this year to Japan in the school term. No regrets

        • +1

Any need to convince the school or can we just take them out pretty easily?

          • +4

@Honeylemondrizzle: If under 4 weeks, just let them know. If more than 4 weeks, might have some paper work. Plenty of online resources these days. Process for me is kids say we are going away for x weeks. I say these are the topics we will be covering, jump on YouTube, Khan Academy etc etc and have a read on the flights/ down time. Life's short…get amongst it!

@tunzafun001: You sound like a great parent. I can’t understand how most people are okay with strictly basing their family’s lives on a government calendar for ~10 years.

              • +1

@alcadive: I work in schools…just explaining my process when kids/ parents say they are taking a trip mid term. So much more to 'learning' than what is inside school walls. For example, too much hate in the world today from lack of exposure to multiple cultures.

                • @tunzafun001: I’m agreeing with you btw. My comment wasn’t meant to be sarcastic if that’s how you read it.

                  • +1

@alcadive: Nah, not at all. Appreciate the compliment. Just people were asking/ seemed too scared to take their kids out of school. Just wanted to clarify I was coming from a teachers perspective that there is no issue taking your kids out during term. Obviously can't speak for all schools, and I'm sure there are a few with over inflated self worth out there. Just need to be realistic and direct your kids to preloaded online resources, books etc to keep up with content they may be missing out on. Plenty of "nowhere to be" air time on this itinerary for that. Get a chapter of the textbook out with your kids and relive those Math nightmares! Then go out and explore…

          • @Honeylemondrizzle: I just told the school. They’re not going to stop me, whatever they try. My kids not theirs! My daughter is studying Japanese as well so got loads out of the experience

  • +1

That seems like a great price for Singapore airlines

  • +1

Just paid $3800 for 25 March 17 April peak times 2 adults .This is a good deal .

  • +11

Doing this turns a 10 hour direct flight into a 16 hour indirect flight. But having said that, Singapore is an awesome layover place, Gardens by the Bay is a cheap 20 min taxi trip, and Changi is super easy to enter and exit.

    • Was just thinking that.

Singapore is a great layover if you're going to somewhere like Europe.

It sucks when it diverts a flight that would be non-stop through Singapore.

  • When something is listed as "17 Feb - 25 Mar", does that mean that you must fly on those two specific dates (effectively in Japan for 36 days), or is that a range in which you can select?

    • +2

In industry parlance that’s the range within which you might find shown prices. Not sure if OP does the same or has cherry picked those dates though, seems unlikely.

    • -1

I reckon it's just an example dates to find that exact price, if you fly on those two specific dates.

    • Those are specific, yes. If you click it, that's what it searches for. You can of course choose your own dates, they're just examples.

  • Would anyone know of good prices for June or July?

    • +5

I wouldnt go to Japan in July unless you like hot and sticky temperature…

      • Oh damn is it that bad during summer? Might go December then

        • +8

My parents live in Japan and they have not stopped using aircon for the past 30 days (including the night time).

        • I've done it (twice) during that time. Found I required two changes of clothes a day. Very muggy. But if you can handle the heat and just accept you'll be sweating, it's remarkably good weather!

        • It sure is. I was there first two weeks of July this year. It was 38 and sunny for many of those days and high humidity. Made most things quite unbearable.

      • Unless you're just raveling around Hokkaido. The only nice place in Summer. Motorcycle and cycling holidays are popular there in the summer.

  • +2

    That is sooooooooooo cheap

  • -2

Japan is great but Thailand is bangin’. Japanese people seem a little sick of their lot. The Thais are loving life.

  • Do Singapore weigh cabin baggage?

  • Nice airline but it's a bit of a long way to go to Japan, unless you're going from Perth. If going from the east coast might be a good idea to stay over in Singapore for one or two nights. Plenty of stuff to do there.

    • I like the idea of starting in Singapore for a couple of nights, how difficult is it to line up with these cheap flights though? Is there a way to select a minimum layover filter or something?

  • Can you upgrade these to business seats?

    • With KF miles? No
      With cash through mySQupgrades? Yes

  • +1

If you can use the layover to stop in Singapore for a couple of days would be good, otherwise I'd still rather take a direct Jetstar flight to be honest.

  • Why does beatthatflight only showing me Sydney to Melbourne no matter what I do to change the cities etc?

    • Just saw this. Try clearing cookies if you're on Chrome (or try a private browsing window). Fixes it for most.

  • Since when did you have have to pay for seat selection on a premium airline?
When booking through gotogate etc, added almost $300 for basic seat selections. Am I missing something?
