wow still $222 for what looks to be a spanner set. Do they work as good as advertised?

    • +4

I just bought one so… I hope so!

    • That's at %50 off… wildly expensive. High expectations I would hope in terms of quality.

      • +1

        Even better, 56% off!

Good to look at in your toolbox ;)

I considered buying a few of these to replace my cheapo Supercheap shifter but the action to engage the jaw put me off.

It would need a lot of space to swing the handle for it to clamp down so this would be hard to use in any tight spots like under sinks.

I ended up buying a Bahco 3pc set of standard shifters during the prime day sales instead.

I bought this set off of a mate for $100. I haven't found them to be any more useful than a ratchet spanner or even just an open end.

They're okay if you have sufficient clearance.

      My main gripes:

      • Loosening a nut. Once there isn't enough friction between the nut and the bolt, the "ratchet" function stops working, I guess same as a normal ratchet spanner however it's much easier to stop a ratchet spanner from turning than this spanner.

      • Clearance. The heads are quite large.

      • Setting of the hex head onto the jaws of the spanner. You can set the hex on the flat of the jaw or the small v groove but I find this makes operation a little janky especially when you can't see the nut being undone.

I could just be using them incorrectly but I've had a good go at them. If anybody's had a better experience I'd love to hear it.

Yes but by Germans who had to immigrate due to the collapsing economy :p

Thank America for that , Bidenomics

    • Don't think it even made in Germany lol

  • +1

Says 25% claimed but only 5 left. Not really sure how the maths checks out.

    • +3

They work in imperial, nobody understands that mess

    • I think the 5 would have been stock on hand, after that it's back-order (as it is now with 82% claimed).

    • That's my sort of maths… see username

  • At this price, I'd rather go with some ratchet spanners as that would likely save more time and effort than a joker spanner.

    • Any recommendation?

    • +1

The usecase for these seem more like a "im not sure if this bolt is imperial or metric, and it looks about 8mm but not sure if its 9mm, ill just grab this thing and itll work". I.e. replacement for a shifting spanner more than the fixed size spanners.

      • How often does that happen? Would be a lot cheaper just to use an adjustable wrench unless you are literally going nuts all day.

        • Which is why you shouldn't buy these unless you're addicted to Wera/Ozb deals, or have a true purpose in using these.

    • +2

At this price they're a no brainer.
I need 2x spanners to tighten a nut and bolt for obvious reasons.
Gearwrench have failed on me several times and the lifetime warranty replacement has been too long winded to every buy them again.
13mm, 16mm and 18mm switch failed after little use. The simple straight flipable ones are alright.
Saving more time and effort, weight and space is the reason you buy these.
Your toolbag gets very light very quickly with these.
*Right tool for the job though
I have all the knipex pliers wrench from 100mm - 400mm some doubles
      2x ratchet spanner sets 5mm-36mm
2x Bahco 5pc ratchet ring spanners
Bahco ring and open spanners to 21mm
Deep impact sockets upt to 36mm
Gedore open end and ring combinations 13+17, 19+24, 16+17, 18+19, 24+27 and more
      Ratchet podgers etc
The list goes on. But my point is that I've needed every one for a different purpose on the ground or in an EWP where tools and whatever you're installing will make the EWP overweight

A breakdown of costs if you were to buy individually (based on recent sales):

    • XS - $26.38
    • S - $35.82
    • M - 39.06
    • L - $50.47
    • XL - Don't believe it has been on sale, at least not listed on OzB, so will assume current listed price of $74.20

Bringing the total to $225.93. Not to mention those individual prices are all expired (and doesn't come with foam insert), so this is quite a decent deal.

    • +1

quite annoyed by the fact that I missed all those previous deals.

XL and L wouldn't be so useful in DIY situations.

    • Its probably more appropriate to compare the other 4 with this:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/836681

It comes with a carry case and was $164.98, but doesnt come with the XL, which makes the XL $57.63 but with a different type of case included.

    Bought one, Thank you OP!

The use case of these are limited compared normal open ended wrenches. I have these and the Normal 9001 jokers.

I've used these under a dozen times over the last 2 years. But each time it was a life / time saver Mostly in confined spaces. Or situations where a nut was covered by something else. E.g. Shelf on a data rack was bolted into to the frame. And that nut was covered by another rack. Standard wrench was blocked by the limited movement. These snuck Into the gap and had just enough rotation to undo the damn nut.
Saved us from disassembling the adjacent rack (bolted down)

      Appreciate the comment.
Its easy to underestimate the importance of niche tools when looking at the price, but they can eliminate or reduce downtime for data and power in certain situations.
