  • Are there better options to the S3422DW?
    For office and some gaming.

Something like this would be good but not sold much in Australia, Gigabyte M34WQ

See my post below. Subjective obviously, but I’d seriously try and take a look at a VA in store to see if you like it. I thought they were terrible for my use case (100% work)

    • I can't imagine any situation where I want a work monitor that isn't 4k.

Generate a new 10% coupon valid till tonight and a brand new S3422DWG/34 is 484.10

Not sure if worth getting refurb for 459.

  • These are cracking options, Dell warranty shouldn't be overlooked. I picked up a used one recently, still under warranty. I have the S3422DWG model. I don't use it for gaming, just for office work and it's a hell of a lot nicer to work on than the two 23" FHD screens I was using before. It is missing USB C power, which wasn't a dealbreaker for me as I already had a docking station from running the two monitors previously. I've not played around with the USB options that it does have. I find the stand to offer good height and tile options, but it does not twist at all. I don't have much to compare it against but I've got no regrets about buying one.

  • Thanks OP, been waiting for the S3423DWC… Disappointed that I missed the last refurb S3423DWC deal, but glad I did as I saved $40 😃

These are VA panels. I was looking to replace my u3415w with something more modern and thought I’d give va a try (got the s3423dwc model)

They’re probably alright for most people but I thought the viewing angles were bad and was a step down from my 10 year old ips panel. It looked very washed out. Gaming was also also pretty bad with it looking very smeary.

For the record, I tried the g3223q (excellent, but was too high for me and gave me a sore neck) and the s2723q (dual - very good as well but 2 27s were too wide). I game on a 32 oled and also have owned the 34 dwf so think I’ve got some decent experience with what looks good.

Ended up with a u3425we, which is overpriced af but for office work I think is one of the better units out there. Spending over a grand for a slightly better version of my u3415 irks me a bit, but whatever.

YMMV, but I’d avoid VA personally

These come up a bit because dell have a great returns policy and… well, lots of people return them :p

Sadly if you want a productivity monitor you’re going to have to pay for it or slum it with these VAs. Although the 60hz lg/dell ips panels go for about 5-600 so they might be worth a look, but will probably be shitty for gaming if you’re after dual use

Same experience going from the u3415w to the s3422dwg, although the 144hz and freesync are nice, smearing issues due to VA panel were terrible.

    • FWIW, there is a huge, huge market of people who use this exclusively for typical "office" applications - web browsing, emails, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, programming…etc. where these are perfectly fine for the price.

As a perfect example, where I work literally has over 200 of this exact Dell monitor, and I'm sure this is also the case for a large number of corporate offices.

Yep - they’re fine for most people who have no choice in the matter, where the cheapest unit is going to win out over other features (if the procurement/IT people even bothered to look/care)

For those that do have the choice, I’d say spending slightly more for IPS is worth it, particularly for excel, word etc

        • We have this s3423dwc at work, and I always have the feeling that I wanted to reduce the brightness. But the brightness is not actually high. I guess that's what people called washed out.

I have two 27" IPS monitors at home. One 4K from Dell (U2720Q) and one 2K from AOC. Both look ok.
I'm looking for an upgrade for that 2K. Do you have a recommendation for me? I want 4K, 32", and USB-C, and not too expensive. 100% office use - no gaming.

At work there was also a Samsung M7 32". I used it once, and felt that my eyes needed to adjust to it - not sure how to explain - just not totally comfortable.

          Thanks

@Averell: I’d be looking at the dell ultra sharp U3223QE or the lg ultra fine which both have usb c. The dell is probably too expensive tho.i haven’t personally used either.

However, I’d seriously look at the g3223q as it’s cheap (I bought mine for 539 during eofy sales) and I thought it looked great for productivity. High refresh rate for general office use isn’t strictly needed but i definitely prefer it. No usb c though.

I only returned mine because it was too tall for my use (I have another 32 for gaming but I found that that size for work didn’t sit right with me). I really wanted to keep it as it was the best ips out of all the ones I tried, and 4K is much better for text clarity than 3440x1440 imo.

    • What's your thoughts on 32" 4K vs 34" widescreen? I'm really hesitant to give up having the horizontal real estate, but I've no experience using a 32" screen to know if it's worth it.

I'm thinking I might spend the $100 more on the P series IPS ones though. The P3424WEB looks particularly good in terms of ditching cables.

I ended up buying both to try. I went back to the widescreen as that worked better for me even though text clarity/panel quality was better with the 32.

It’s one of those personal preference things. At least with dell you can try it out..

        • I'm currently pretty happy with my two 24" 1080p IPS screens because my office has mismatched 15 year old TN panels everywhere, so I imagine the widescreen option will work perfectly fine for me.

          Thanks for the info!

  • Pleased to score a S3222DGM for $419
    Thanks!

    • Seems there was only one, OOS now.

  • Thanks, bought the G3223Q for $439.

    • How did you get $439?

I see it for $509 on outlet

  • whats the difference in the 34 inch monitors? And whats dells warranty like with the 3 years?

    • Gaming/productivity focus.

Dells Warranty and returns process is best in class, imo

  • Rather used than refurb. Learnt my lesson now. Inherently, there's something something wrong with it.

    • Please do elaborate?

I’ve bought about 5 “refurbs” in the last year from dell and they’ve been all like new.

      • It can be hit and miss. Many of the refurbs are just returns with no faults.

Others are ones obvious faults that are fully repaired.

But there are also ones with intermittent faults that are returned but then are not properly tested and are sold as refurbs.

I've experienced the later a few years back with a laptop with a well known intermittent touchpad problem that was fixed with an updated touchpad. Dell had heaps of them as refurbs so the price was great. I assumed they just swapped the touchpads out on all of them.

Nope. Intermittent fault still there. The testing process for refurbs does not seem very good.

And Dell support was absolutely useless when trying to get it sorted out. I could barely get a response from them. Eventually I said accept these return and refund or I'm lodging a charge back. They refunded it and never organised the return…

I then opened up the laptop, soldered a wire for extra grounding to fix the problem (people online had figured it faster than Dell) and it worked fine.

        • Oh for sure - but if you pick it up early enough it’s not much of a hassle to send it back.

Dells qc can be questionable but at least the returns process isn’t the same as others (lg and Samsung are supposedly terrible)

          • @Wally Simmonds: Not in my case. I noticed in the first day. Dell wouldn't accept any return. I never even got a clear answer why. The times I actually got to speak to someone they looked at it and didn't understand why. But no one actually fixed the issue.

A friend more recently had the same issue but with a new laptop. It wasn't the same spec as the variant bought (different res screen) and Dell refused the return without giving a reason The friend also resorted to a chargeback. Dell sent the credit card company the delivery confirmation but nothing more so the charge back was successful. Dell never followed up to collect the laptop.

Don't get me wrong, Dell makes some great products. And some terrible ones. And many people have zero issues with the returns process. But it's certainly not simple if something goes awry. Hopefully that's improved more recently.

  • I am thinking of getting the dell s3422dw and if I use the 7% coupon then brand new will be $70 more. Is it still worth getting refurbished?
