  • Wow!! bargains galore!

In my experience, the longevity of G-shock bands and cases is very poor. They are very expensive to replace, and they stop stocking parts within years of release. They are also quick to blame it on wear and tear.

I don't know whether this shop sells official Australian stock, but if it's grey import, than Casio won't want to known about it and statutory warranty may not help you.

All stock is Australian and comes with manufacturers warranty.

    • I didn't neg you but if you don't bend the strap back when inserting the buckle it should last a long time.

      • +1

I never did, but within a few years mine still broke and the case started to disintegrate. Cost >$100 to fix (years ago). For our daughter, it broke where the pins go through after just 1 year. Replacement was half the price of the watch, and they didn't have the right colour anymore. I quoted Australian Consumer Law when they blamed it on wear and tear ("not fit for purpose as it should be expected to last longer") but it turned out to be grey import so they still wouldn't help.

They may be shock proof, but they can't stand the test of time.

        • It does sound very odd. What models? perhaps they were fakes. Especially unlucky that it happened to both so not sure what you are doing to them. Leather bands would need replacing far sooner.

Like everything on the internet, there's always one person that complains but probably over 1000 that are happy.

ACL ABSOLUTELY applies to grey imports. It applies to any goods sold into Australia, but you need to go to the vendor who sold it to you, not the manufacturer (assuming you bought it off a reseller rather than Casio's own boutiques or website).

          • @y2k: So purchasing from an overseas site?
Obviously you'd contact the store you bought it from and see what they can do. After a few years it would be considered wear and tear.

Would be easier getting some straps from AliExpress.

            • @G-rig: Yes, ACL applies to vendors selling into Australia, whether they are based here or overseas. The manufacturer's warranty is completely separate to ACL automatic guarantees - as we've all seen from the various statements on Amazon etc.

The practical problem with getting a refund from overseas is enforcement. It's much easier for Fair Trading NSW etc to pursue someone with an Australian office than wherever the Temu/AliExpress black box might be in the world.

But while @Make it so didn't say who he or she contacted, it sounds like it may have been Aussie. In that case, if the vendor is giving you grief, you should approach your state's consumer watchdog (FT NSW, or SAV etc - all states have one. Just don't approach the ACCC as they outsource case management to the state bodies). They're actually quite helpful.

As for the ACL's durability guarantee vs the wear and tear exception (vendors will often try to claim the latter), it's a price vs reasonable expectation test, and the watchdogs have provided some guidance in this document, which you can quote to vendors or the watchdogs if you lodge a case, and it's fair to say unless you have paid $10 for something, a reasonable person would expect most goods to last more than a year ie the miserly standard manufacturer warranty. @Make It So mentioned it was within a few years, but not how much the watch cost.

              • @y2k: Ok what about people ordering from overseas sites lol (ie jomashop)? They have various currency and language options so there is probably a grey area.

                Eg what about tictacarea?

                • @G-rig: For both Jomashop and TicTacArea, you run into the enforcement issue I mentioned, which is that while they are absolutely covered by ACL because they sell into Australia, it is likely too hard for Fair Trading NSW etc to chase an overseas vendor in NYC (Jomashop) or Spain (TicTacArea).

I'm not saying you should not buy from those shops - they have other reasons to do right by you, such as reviews - but you just don't have any practical legal options.

                  • @y2k: Ok good to know. I've bought from both without issues. Wouldn't be worth worrying about, or just pay a bit more and buy locally.

Joma are no fly by night setup and very happy to help (I sent an oris back for a refund once, the main effort was courier and trying to get your import duty back). Anyway keep it under 1k hopefully much closer to a couple of hundred.

          • @y2k: Vendor was very defensive and didn't want to cover straps. I figured dealing with Casio was easier, but alas. Since Casio had indicated they didn't even stock the strap in that colour anymore, I couldn't be bothered and got a $7 strap from somewhere and cut it to size.

            • @Make it so: Vendors will often be defensive, esp smaller ones who can't absorb return costs and have less clout with the manufacturers who they often would approach for reimbursement. That's why you should be polite, make a reasonable effort with one or two exchanges, and then if they're still resisting, go to your state watchdog with the facts.

That said, how much did you spend on your daughter's watch? If it were say $500, I'd say the reasonable person would not expect the case and band to fall apart after say, 3 years. But if you spent $200 and it was four years, then many folks would think it's wear and tear.

              • @y2k: $130 - 1 year.
Vendor super defensive from the get go. Couldn't be bothered wasting time fighting them.

  • Small range. Only 13 mens watches total. Meh

  • Some watches are at least 25% cheaper elsewhere
