Obligatory "European router imports suck because their signal strength is irreparably borked because regulations" comment

@jv: Die Dinge sind nicht immer so, wie sie scheinen

    • Is this actually a thing?

  • This thing is so annoying to set up unless you know your way around, if you have older devices I would stay away tbh. I also do not recommend using it with a wireless backhaul as the AiMesh signal is mid at best. I have it set up on two floors literally no obstruction and still getting moderate signals. Lately it has been factory resetting at random times that I have to save configuration on multiple devices. Wifi speeds are great when it works but it has this dumb "smart connect" option that would keep passing your devices around the mesh and disconnect you at random times so I just disabled it for peace of mind.

    • Good point. This is recommended for wired backhaul only.

    • When I first got this and was just playing around with it the signal was average, not close to advertised and I just had to accept it as we were finishing up our Vodafone contract. When the contract was over and we got rid of the Vodafone hub the Asus signal significantly improved and has been maxing out speed.

When setting these up ice learnt to keep them away from other devices that transmits similar frequency

If you do need to do wireless backhaul, I think you have to cough up, pay the extra, and go for a tri-band offering. That reduces your choices as most are still dual band. A good workaround though is to use powerlines if your house isn't wired up with Cat5 or Cat6 cabling. I've been runnning a combo of both until recently, and it's worked really well giving wide coverage and good speeds. A lightning strike fried some of my kit which has forced me into an upgrade. The advances in technology mean that I can now get away with two high spec routers, rather than the three I had before. And I therefore no longer need to run a wireless backhaul. I plumped for some near new options off Facebook Marketplace, and got two Asus AX-GT6000 units running in AiMesh with a 2.5Gb connection between them. The strength of signal, speed and speed of the user interface is outstanding. Not cheap, and they're Wifi6 when there are newer 6E and 7 routers out there now, but more than fast enough when there's only a 100/40 NBN service at the house.

Don't get routers from the EU and if running wireless backhaul use a tri-band one like the ASUS XT8. I have been using the XT8 for the past 3 years and while initially there were issues, they are all pretty much resolved. ASUS actually has someone who monitor the Whirlpool forums and when I posted my issues on there, he was quick to respond and even provided me with a beta firmware for testing which did resolved my issue. I was pretty happy with that.
