Cobram Extra Virgin Olive Oil Classic 3 Litre is on special at Coles this week.
$50
Cobram Extra Virgin Olive Oil Classic 3 Litre is on special at Coles this week.
$50
Much better than Cobram Estate.
It works like a wine cask. So the oil will take longer to oxidise and go rancid than if it was in a bottle.
nice, i'll definitely give it a shot.
how does the oil come out of the cask? is it easy to dispense for daily cooking
You're right, canola oil is suitable for a lot of cases where people are using olive oil.
Not all cases though.
better yet, use the random oil from the asian grocer
/s
Not necessarily the same. One is a processed seed oil, the other is a fruit kernel oil.
If I had data to prove my theory I'd be bothered to share it but I'm adamant that olive oil prices basically doubled 18-24 months ago.
Yet shoppers seemingly only cottoned onto the ridiculousness of it in the last few months.
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/olive-oil
Won't be too hard to find
Going by that, it seemed to only really spike the last 6 months. Prior to that it went up about 15-20% over a few years.
So maybe I'm misinterpreting my shopping memory. Either way, I'm sure the prices will go down once the worlds greatest famine ends in some olive grove in Greece, as we're led to understand.
The world's top olive oil producers of which top 3 are Spain, Italy, and Turkey. Famine in greece nothing to do with olive oil price as it is not a big player.

Correct, as I said, profiteering is all this is.
Keep a look out for the Cobram financial report for end of Half 1.
Lol
This is because Aldi never raised prices, it just went out of stock until all of a sudden the prices went up a lot.
This is how the world is promoting healthy cooking oil, making it more expensive until the average family is unable to afford it.
You should start an olive farm and sell the oil cheaper
Lol like he controls Australian olive oil production.
Must be the strong links he has to the olive oil union.
Or it could be that they can sell their oil overseas and get a better price than Coles and Woolies will give them.
The price of olive oil is higher due to the CFMOU … they're on strike and only giving contracts to olive pickers who are part of the union. The non-CFMOU members are scabs! Scabs!
Boo scabs, boo. You're un-Australian! Boo
Do you want your house burnt down? I know some members…
Funny that there is all this talk and they still get a 30% pay rise lol
Albanese wasn't in power when your education failed you, or vice-versa.
Any chance this could be the 2024 harvest?
Yesterday I bought 4l for 60 in Coles, better value. There was a voucher 150 spend, 20 off. Softened the blow a bit.
CommBank stacked as well, 200 for 10 lol
Cash rewards 2% 😂
This must be a foreign oil?
Coles 5% cashback via Cashrewards, min $200 spend
Cashrewards coupon code for $10 off min $100 spend
Brings this down to $15.12/litre
Oh well, I'm in the spend $50 4 weeks in a row for 10k points. Guess I'll just get the oil to complete the cycle, nothing much else in the catalogue that I need.
Maybe then I can tell myself I got the oil for free…
Save yourself some bucks and consider Rice Bran Oil, equally as healthy, higher smoke point and yet to be counterfeited.
I fail to see the value in olive oil and know it is 'over-hyped'!
That stuff tastes terrible on toast and in dips/sauces. Not everyone uses OO for cooking
isn't it best practice to use olive oil as soon as possible after opening it? how much olive oil are people using that they can get through this before it's no longer fresh?
Switched to ghee and am not looking back.
Ghee is an excellent option for cooking. Where do you get yours from?
Local Indian grocer :)
RIP your LDL cholesterol levels
Ghee is fine. Studies show it either doesn't affect or lowers LDL levels: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3215354/
Extra virgin olive oil is purely for flavour, aka finishing meals or part of a dressing.
Most of your cooking can be done with a standard vegetable oil.
What about health?
Oil is far from the top of the list of things that make people unhealthy.
Oil is for creating a medium for heat transfer from the pan to the food, you should be minimising the amount of oil in the final product unless is specifically is part of the meal, in which case olive oil is a good choice.
This makes sense, thanks
I've been using olive oil for the las 25 years but I just swapped to macadamia as it was $10/L last week. Let's see
This is why you're poor and they're rich..
I stacked with Flybuys 25% points and SB 10% bonus
So.. Cobram or Red Island 😟
RI before it all sells out. I’m worried I won’t be able to get any Friday
get this one for $15 pl
https://www.eggsdirect.com.au/product-page/20-litre-extra-vi…
Probably go rancid before you finish all 20L.
share with the fam, everyone will invite you to a BBQ if you bring a litre
Had been waiting for an oil special but also was wondering why the prices were so high lately. These comments have helped but ffs what a joke
just recently realised how bloody expensive it is now….insane how much things have gone up without keeping track of certain items….omg….i thought there were just slight increases in prices…..but I need to check the massive ones now….like olive oil.
It didn't seem that long ago when they were selling this for $24 while on special from about $30. Now $50 half price, wow.
No, $65 is the normal price.
I only buy Cobram on 50% off which is regular and then stock up
No stock at all nearby stores (Sydney), just like the Nongshim Black Ramyun from Woolies.
Thanks OP. Stacked with my weekly spend incentive & GCs.
This is not in the catalogue because there is so little supply.
My big Coles ran out of stock in the morning. Luckily the little Coles has all the stock allocated.
I was told by a sales manager 1 carton allocated to each store (that is, 3 cans), in addition to whatever was there already.
For the commenters saying profiteering, check out the global price chart and select 3 years.
4lt of Red Island olive oil in costco for $54 if you have a membership
Is this the best olive oil in Australia?
Nope.
Here the award-winning ones, though no judge from Turkey (3rd biggest producer) and Greece (4th biggest producer).
https://internationaloliveawardsaustralia.com.au/2023-result…
and here certified Australian EVOO producers by states and market brands. https://australianextravirgin.com.au/brands/
So you can't get them from woolies?
European/middle east oils from ethical producers are the best you can buy here in terra australis. Said producers are finding it harder to produce, partly the end result of major corporates, their monopolistic tendencies, & their influence over government policies national & international. Some local olive oil producers are ok, but taste it & if it has a slight burn in the throat, then that is an indication of the use of pesticides/herbicides. This happens with some import oils too, which is why it is important to try to find a brand that doesn't have that burn.
I've noticed prices have more than doubled over the past 3 or so years. It will probably get more expensive before it gets better, if it gets better at all.
Some imported brands are now mixing olive oil with either safflower, sunflower, canola or other oils. Some of these mixed oils are from genetically engineered crops.
Pomace oil is another slightly cheaper oil option, it is basically the dregs & last pressings of the olives.
People are being squeezed financially from all sides, as well as being poisoned. Good quality nutritious foods are slowly being priced out of reach of the average person, as well as being restricted for sale. We should be consuming raw milks & cheeses, but these are banned, we should be eating good quality meat & eggs, but the animals & feed are being poisoned.
Why is there a shortage? Is it because of the Middle East conflict?
I used to buy Cobram. I like to buy local where possible. Recently tried greek olive oil from a deli (Orlando's) in Doncaster, Victoria (Kolympari I think is the brand). The Greek olive oil blows Cobram out of the water. I'm sorry, it's not even close. Cheaper per litre, too. (Have still upvoted, good deal).
I buy from this family owned and run farm in Outback Queensland;
$45 for 3L in a tin. Not including postage. Buy a couple of things and make the most of the postage cost.
looks interesting. how does the cask work and how is the quality? lets say compared to cobram estate
