On this weeks episode of how low can you go, the automatic frunk kit has been dropped down to $408 making it an all time low and great value for a robust and market tested kit. Kits are shipped express and usually arrive within 5 business days of dispatch. I’ve been running this kit for over 18 months and it hasn’t missed a beat.

If you’re in the market for other accessories the code VANILLA can be applied sitewide.

  • Anyone know where in Sydney, one would go to get installed on a Y?

    • If you’re on the Tesla groups on facebook there are a few installers. Feel free to pm if you need a referral.

  • Hail Saton! 408 is 61% of the number of the beast!

  • Does tesla has front sensors? My friend got hit by a tesla. But there was no damage.

      Tough friend!

      • You might no him, goes by Mr Bump ?

  • Presume there's some breaches of the ADR with an auto front trunk opening kit? Normally front bonnets and trunks are double latched to reduce the risk of accidentally opening whilst driving.

@turkz1 you should clarify here for potential buyers in Australia otherwise you're opening yourself up to legal liability in the event of something going wrong.

Buyers should also be aware of their obligations within their local jurisdictions.

Unsure why you would presume that and introduce FUD. This is an add on kit. The existing OEM Tesla frunk latch design remains intact and unchanged.

Maybe the OP can shed more light on the failsafe of this device? e.g. how is the secondary latch activated, what failsafe is in place to prevent activating the secondary latch/latch position while car is in motion ?

      As per ADR

      42.2 BONNET LATCHING
Any movable body panel forward of the windscreen that serves to cover an engine, luggage, storage or battery compartment must be provided with a latch system. A panel opening from the front which in any open position partially or completely obstructs a driver’s forward view through the windscreen must be provided with a second latch position on the latch system or with a second latch system.

The original intent was to make sure that the bonnet could not be fully opened from within the vehicle.
However the wording is a bit more relaxed than that.

      • On the stock standard Model Y, it is just the primary latch. There is no manual secondary latch that you have to push by hand to release like there is on older cars. Once you open the front bonnet, all you need to do is to pull it up to fully open it.

Go blame Tesla and the regulators who passed the car for sale here even if ADR 42.2 states that a secondary latch is required.

        • Apparently there is a secondary latch.

The primary and secondary disengage when you pop the "frunk". The secondary re-engages if you wait too long to fully open the "frunk". (you can hear the latch motor when it does)

    • He doesn't work for them. He's only getting referral $$.

  • im surprised installing something like this doesn't void the warranty

  • The website says "Easy Installation". Is it really that easy, or best to hire a professional to do it?

    • If you are a mechanic its easy lol.

Easy for the model 3. Shit job for the model Y.

Need some specific tools which does not come with the kit for the Y. Takes about 2 hrs if it's your first time. A good installer with the right tools takes about 45 mins.

      • so the next question would be how to get a good installer for free

        • Watch lots of youtube and install yourself. Be prepared to lose some skin for the Y. Wear long sleeves and gloves.

  • still 650 for the model 3……

    • Did you try adding to cart and check the price then?

  • Any discounts for model x (2017)?

I never had a car with a power opening of anything (I know it is popular for the trunk), but for me, it just sounds like another thing that can go wrong with the car.

Is it worth such a feature? Genuinely asking, as maybe it would be a feature I like.

    • When I had it I used it. Preferable to the old BMW spring the boot open at 100km/hr.
However, I can't say that now not having it has had much affect.

  • Can you open / close the boot and frunk by being close and touching something? My hands are typically full with baby and what not, so that would be my preferred use case. I dont want to fumble with an app to do it.

If apple user, you can use siri to open. Have a google how to.

Android users need some paid subscriptions to use google assistant. (tessie + IFTTT)

Alternatively you can use 'on approach" functions if you have Drive Electric for Tesla app on a galaxy watch

Seems like a big expense just to make access easier for such a small storage space.

Your car would have to be fully loaded so often that you can't just place something on the seats to justify the price.

    • It's cheaper than replace a window glass maybe.

Strong smelling items in the frunk = fresh air in the car. EG: petrol cans, food, oily turbos going for rebuild.

Also with a mat with high sides in the frunk, if anything spills, easy clean up.

Personally i keep all groceries in frunk also cause of the small space. Taking corners hard = things are not rolling around for a far distance in boot.

  • Don't @ me bro
