    That annual fee is laughable

    • +12

Its very high for what you get, but the 275,000 points ($1,375 cash conversion) covers the annual fee. Other benefits like dinning, travel credits, travel perks make it worth it imo

      • Great deal!

      • currently holding David John’s amx card, guess this offer won’t qualify, is it?

        • David Jones Amex is gone now

          • +1

@beaker: like I’m still eligible for this amx deal or means just no more DJmax card?

            • +1

              @Cheryhello: DJ Amex doesn’t count.

            • +1

@Cheryhello: That is a pretty good card to have AFAIK. Low annual charges and a few benefits with good points return.

    • Can't argue

    • +9

Apparently this card is not for everyone. If you travel a lot this is the best card to own, the owners of this card should know how to squeeze the best value to beat the annual fee.

    • +7

This card is 100% not for you. With that fees we usually get over 10k of benefits each year.

    • +3

The card is targeted at frequent flyers, and if you're using this card properly, the card benefits pay back the cost of the fee many times over. Even just the vouchers and cashbacks you get cover most of it, let alone all of the membership and subscription benefits.

I had this card for 12 months over a period where we did a massive trip and had to fly interstate frequently, and I reckon it paid for itself at least 3 times over.

      • This card is targeted to non-churners. Anyone churning has a high auto decline rate.

    • +1

      But it's perks aren't.

It's not a product for everyone, but if you do travel a bit, it's lounge access is very good. Firstly you get the equivalent of the best priority pass lounge membership, which regularly cost around $700. You also have access to all the Amex lounges and you also get access to Delta, Virgin Australia and Lufthansa lounges to when flying them. Theres also the $450 travel credit, the accor plus (valued at $400), the $400 dining credit and the cashback on prime.

      • Happy to be corrected but I don’t think this is the best priority pass membership. This one doesn’t include meal allowances at venues outside of lounges like the top one does?

        • It used to be prestige tier but recently they removed the meal allowance part.

          • @abs898: For new members or existing members too ?

        • You may be right on the meal part, but I think my point is with all the accessibility to many lounges, I'd say it's at least worth $700 for all the access you get.

Plus it includes a guest too.

I'd say if you travel on at least 10 individual flights a year, you be very close to getting you money's worth.

Edit: Another benefit is a supplementary card holder can also access the same lounge benefits except at Lufthansa lounges. There's also a few other perks too available to the supplementary card hold too like various hotel program statuses (Whole threads about this at Australian Frequent Flyer).

          • @Pcoder: Virgin Lounge membership equivalent

    • You get your money back in flights. Its you don't fly often then forget about it.

  • What's the best way to make use of those points?
I found that i can het cheaper flights than that they offer using points ( i am still new to it anyhow so i might be missing something)
    TIA

    • Business class for sure

    • +3

Rewards seats, not using points as an alternate to cash.

    • 275,000 points will convert to 137,500 Qantas points which will be enough to get you from Sydney to LAX in J

      • +1

What is meant by “in J”

        • +1

          J = Business Class

    • +2

Look at other airlines programs like Cathay and Singapore airlines to convert to as they can offer great value Business class redemptions with more availability than QFF. The value is in the premium cabins as the taxes are mostly the same but the redemptions are only about twice as much points compared to usually four times the cost if payed with cash.

  • Usually how long do you guys cancel the card after claiming the sign up bouns?

    • I hear you can cancel as soon as you get the points but as a heads up I believe you need to transfer/spend the points before you cancel as they will also disappear.

      • Also the travel credit I guess.

    • Soon as the points land for me. But with Amex, they are cracking down on churners, so I would reconsider if you do want to keep the benefits.

    • +4

This is not a churning card. It's a good long term or at least a year worth keeping card

      • Certainly not asking for Amex card

    • This card is the only card i've never cancelled, had it since 2016 because the perks go far beyond any other card on the market currently, especially since I travel a lot.

Other cards, maybe 1-2 months post getting the bonus.

      • How much do you travel to make this worth it?
If I do 2 international trips and maybe 1-2 domestic in a year would you reckon this would be worth it?

        • 2-4 is what I do. I do plenty of domestic but this card doesnt help much for work domestic travel.

I've had this card for around 15 years and the price has steadily been increasing while the benefits decrease.

I used to send an email and say book me dinner at xxxx or get me 3 tickets to xxxx, They pulled the option to do this by email awhile ago but don't think they even have the concierge service now that will do that (or even if they have the concierge service anymore because it was so down graded it became easier to do it yourself).

Very few useful perks now for me to justify the price has had me considering cancelling for about 6 years.

  • good but less and less companies are now not accepting American express. so if that keeps up this will start to be useless.

    • I actually find more are accepting. Only big loss is ebay, but Amazon is better anyways.

If a friend's referral shows a 200,000 bonus, has anyone had experience with refreshing/VPN for it to change to 275,000? (so that they get a referral bonus as well)

    • +3

yes, tried other devices, incognito and VPN
was able to get 275k with the same referral link

      • +1

Thanks @littlesoldier it worked! For anyone else in this situation, after a lot of refreshing in different VPN locations in different browsers, it popped up with this combination:
        1. Windows PC
        2. Firefox Private Browsing
        3. VPN to Adelaide

If you really want to squeeze a deal out of this, here are the steps:
    1. Sign up and meet spending criteria
    2. Use that $450 travel credit
    3. Spend those $400 global dining credits
    4. Transfer those points to Virgin Australia when they have transfer bonus promotion
    5. Sign up to all those AMEX credit shopping offer
    6. Use your free nights with Accor Plus and eat at those Accor Plus restaurants for discounts 25% (for 1), 50% (for 2), 33%( for 3) and 25%( for 4+)
    7. Before your annual fee renewal, Accor Plus will be renewed so free accor plus membership for 1 more year and 1 more free night
    8. Use $400 global dining credits again before annual fee renewal
    9. Just in case, use those travel insurances - they are some of the best insurances for credit card. I received nearly 10k+ from one claim due to loss of income from an injury while traveling.
    10. Cancel before Annual Fee Renewal occur
All in, you are basically making money back from this deal.

    • +3

Its $400 dining credits per calendar year
so you can claim it for 2024 and 2025, which is $800 dining credits in total

And same for $84 amazon prime credit (per calendar year)
you can pay 2 years of amazon prime

      For Accor plus
it usually renew 1 month before accor plus annual due date
so you can wait for accor plus to renew first before you cancel the card (valued at $399)

      1. Cancel before Annual Fee Renewal occur

You can actually cancel the card up to 30days after your next year annual fee being charged (and get the refund)
as long as you have not spend the $450 travel credits after the renewal

    • +1
      1. Cancel before Annual Fee Renewal occur

Because it's a charge card and not a credit card people have been successful in calling up and getting offered bonus points to keep the card. ymmv obviously

    • Saving this comment for once I'm a Billionaire and can get approved for this card.

      • You sign up to this and become a billionaire, not the otherway around

  • If you sign up to get the points, then cancel the card, how long do you have to wait before you can get another sign up bonus?

    • 18 months and if you do, they will notice a trend and likely to reject your application. I tend to keep it at 2 years.

  • +2

There's a long running deal which is clicking via a referral link for 275K MR points, someone posted it back in Feb,
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/829833

Which is relatively easier way to get this card and gonna benefit you and the ozb referee : )

    1. Can you get points by buying qantas airline tickets for family members? What about friends?

    2. What about status credit. Will buying qantas tickets for family increase your status credits?

    • +1
      1. You get points by spending on the card, so buying qantas airline tickets will count towards spending ($1 = 2.25 reward points). You can convert reward points to Qantas frequent flyer points, ratio is 2 points = 1 frequent flyer point

      2. You don't earn qantas status credits unless you fly with qantas. Status credits are awarded after your flight. So simply buying qantas tickets won't earn status credits, you have to fly with qantas.

        1. Do you earn status credit from your family members flying with Qantas after the flight?
        • +1

No, status credits will only be awarded personally to the person who took the flight, not the person who bought the ticket

So your family members will earn status credits to their own frequent flyer account

  • +1

I wonder if they are still instant declining churners?

    • Not sure what the chances are those days, I got a rejection from ANZ and straight up went for this deal which was approved after a phone call and couple of payslips back in earlier last month

    • I got rejected in early March and I just applied today again :)
I've just got westpac altitude platinum so even if I get rejected by amex again, I'm fine.

    • +1

I tried for this card in Jan 2024, declined

Tried again last month for just a no annual fee, 2k limit card (no bonus points at all) as I just wanted to get an Amex for non-SUB reasons - still rejected, same reason (info in my credit file). I didn't apply for any other cards in between those 6 months.

Until I start seeing them accept churners again at some point in the future I'll stay away from applying again myself.

      • I got another rejection letter in the mail.
I'll stay away from amex as well, I can get more benefits by churning other banks' cc with low effort

  • No option to get this if you already have another Amex card is there?

    • Would like to know also

    • No

    • No, you won't qualify for the bonus offer. If you call them, you can ask if there is an upgrade offer but usually if there is something available it will be credit to credit, not to a charge card.

If you have the Green or Gold card, you can try to ask for an upgrade

  • +2

Some of the benefits can sound good for some people, but are actually rarely of use for frequent flyers - they would have their own status with their preferred airline/alliance and hotel chain, and the Amex travel website isn't the best in terms of range or prices. The dining credits are good only if you want to go to those restaurants. The travel insurance is pretty good though but there's hardly anything that would justify continuing holding the card after the first year.

    • Depends, if I didn't have this card, my travel insurance on it's own is about $1k for the year. Dining + travel + FHR+ Business class discount + Amazon + other cashback offers makes up for a good lot.

    • I agree. Unless you are planning in churning, the long term holders of this card don't find the benefits as attractive as they seem. Eg don't need priority pass/amex lounge/virgin lounge access as already have gold/plat/plat one with qantas, or equivalent with virgin. And you don't need those lounge access perks if you primarily fly business class.

The free supplementary card is where it's more useful, especially if the spouse/kids are travelling without the primary cardholder, if they don't have their own status.

    • Agree. Benefits for frequent travellers may be good but for business travellers who frequently travel business class, lounge access usually comes with the tickets. Hotels are generally based on whatever the corporate rates the company negotiate on. When one frequently travels across multiple timezones, after meetings and meetings, one would either head back to their hotel, have a quick dinner and continue working to hit the sack. Would be hard-pressed to to even find time to search out restaurants on Amex list in order to spend those international dining credits etc. Insurance are also generally covered by companies for business trips or by airline. Context ..

Perhaps for casual travellers , card and sub may come in handy for those once or twice annual family trips for access to lounges, free time to go sight seeing, wine and dine etc.

  • +1

since I travel for around 6 months of the year, I figure the insurance alone is worth almost 1k to me.

    • I would second that.

  • I miss the 1:1 MR to KFF. Would justify the price for me.

  • +1

Annoyingly AMEX doesn't offer this to existing customers so I'll have to cancel my card for 18 months. Now I have to think about where to shift my existing reward points to before I cancel the card.

    • That's so cumbersome!

    • Actually do Amex Aus provides upgrade offer?

      • I. Wanting. To know this to as a platinum edge member for over 8 years

      • On their FAQ:

        https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/platinum/

How do I upgrade to The American Express® Platinum Card?
If you are a current Card Member, you may be eligible to upgrade your current Charge Card to The Platinum Card. To see if you are eligible, simply log in to your Online Account or call the number on the back of your Card.

It sounds like you need to have an existing charge card first before upgrading.

  • What income do you need for this card?

    • It used to be 100k+ but then they removed it from their website.

  • damn looks tempting but not a big spender so probably can't meet the spending requirement :(

    • +1

Just post your card details via a PM, I can help you spend it. LOL

      • 1234 1111 2345 …….. wait a minute!!!!

  • Will I get the offer if I have the platinum business one?

  • Any idea on how much net monthly income is required? I tried for a Qantas Ultimate Amex recently but got rejected instantly. I’ve been out of the AMEX program for about 21 months now, so is it too soon to be considered as a churner? Tips or advice would be great and how long I should wait until applying for another AMEX?

    • It used to state 100k but now it's gone. they probably look at your income, spending, loan balance, payment history, and application history. If you got rejected recently then highly likely that this will also be instant rejection. AMEX is 18 months so if you closed your card 21 months ago then you should be applicable.

  • Got this deal last year before a holiday when it was 320,000, was great value. Although since then there was another reduction in the conversion value to most airlines so the points don't go as far anymore.

  • +1

Amex has seriously gone downhill. This card used to be prestigious. Their overseas call centers now open at 8/9am and close at 6pm AEST. They're only open on weekdays. If you have any issues other than a lost/stolen card, you have to call between those hours.

Gone are the days when they will chase up fraudulent transactions for you. They are extremely lazy. I had an unauthorized charge by a hotel and I was forced to chase it up myself. Makes the CBA credit card team look like a dream.

I've had Amex cards for the past 25 years, and as time has gone by, they've seriously gotten worse. Their customer service has gone to s**ts, the points have been devalued to the equivalent of platinum visa/master and the benefits have been significantly reduced. Honestly, ANZ Black have better coverage for travel insurance than this mob.

Used to spend > $100k/yr on this card till I got tired of their BS. At least with a platinum card like the "ANZ Frequent Flyer Black" more providers will accept it.

Don't get me started on the Centurion card…

    • I had 2 fraudulent transactions within hours of using the card for an Uber in Amsterdam. They blocked them and called our home, emailed and texted. While speaking to them they issued new physical and virtual card that could be used instantly. This was for Qantas Ultimate card. Very impressed.

    • I was gonna ask about Centurion actually. Since >$100k/yr for 25 years would've qualified you for Centurion for sure?

In the last few years leading up to your Centurion, what was your average monthly spend, and on what sort of spend? Did you initiate by expressing an interest first?

      • I wasn't spending $100k/year over the past 25 years though :-) Only so much in the past 24 months.

Honestly, Centurion has now lost almost all the benefits that it had in addition to the Platinum. The latest big loss is the automatic upgrade to Emirates Skywards Gold. With that gone, it pretty much mirrors what the platinum offers. The insurance on the Centurion has higher limits, but honestly, I'd rather not have to deal with insurance. It's still Chubb and they treat you like crap until the process is done. Any excuse not to payout (from experience). The platinum has the added benefit of free Amazon Prime. So in that sense, you're getting more value out of a platinum charge than you would with a centurion. You're just paying $6k/year (or more now) for the privilege of flashing your "black" Amex. The US version of the centurion has way better benefits and a much lower annual fee (relatively speaking). Anyone who gets a centurion here gets taken for a fool (as they should be).

  • +1

been an amex plat member for 20+ years back when it was invite only. their fees have gone up from $900 to $1450 since then. Still find it worthwhile as I also have the original complimentary platinum edge credit card which has its own $400 travel credit (this card is not offered anymore), travel internationally at least once a year so the priority pass, accor and gold hotel status helps. you just have to keep on top of all the offers for rebates and such. what i do find good though is their included travel insurance (although its not as good as it once was) and that supplementary cardholders also get the full insurance (as well as any dependant children up to 21) and access to the amex/centurion lounges. So since i have maxed out my additional cardholders (wife, son, sister & mum), i still consider it has value for the annual fee.

    • sad that AMEX cancelled the $400 travel credit since 2021
but agree with most of what you say
I think $1450 worth the fee if you can max out all the benefits coming from the card
for me the additional cards with lounge access is a big selling point
the only comparable card in the market is Citi Prestige, but it only comes with 1 priority pass (with 1 guest)
which is not as good as amex plat where you can easily bring the whole family

Another advantage where not many people have mentioned
AMEX plat is a charge card, which will not affect credit rating
this is pretty useful for some where you have other loans / credit cards on hand

  • I signed up for this card 6 weeks ago just before my European holiday to get lounge access. The benefit has been good, although out of the 5 lounges we wanted to get into , 2 were full of capacity. While the other 3 were good. Overall, it has been worthwhile so far. I also used it for rental car and travel insurance. I haven't had a chance to use the other benefits yet.

With the sign-up bonus in points equivalent for the 1st year this makes it a no brainer. However, i am not sure if i will renew it for the second year. I read somewhere that if you are a part of an association, then the annual fees are lower, like 1200. Does anyone know about this?

    • yeah, the hire car LDW is up to AUD$125k

  • +1

Had this card for years now and easy cover the annual fee even since it's gone up. Use to have nice subscription deals for AFR mag.

Traveled through Europe last year easily eat and drank over 3k worth in airports for free in lounges. If I would have had to buy stuff in airports. Lost our luggage had to purchase whole new clothes in Switzerland (up there with most expensive places to have to buy a new wardrobe) all covered with insurance with the card.

    $450 travel credit
    Dining credits

All the decent offers they have adds up pretty quickly. To get your money's worth for us.

  • +1

The Amex Platinum isn't great value for everyone, but with ongoing promotions it might be able to work for you for 1-2 years and then you'd reassess after that period of time. I've listed below an (incomplete list) of benefits with their corresponding "value" (prices listed are AUD unless specified)

    • $450 annual travel credit (can be used on flights, hotels or packages)
    • Complimentary Virgin Australia domestic lounge access ($399)
    • 2x Priority Pass memberships which gives access to 1400 lounges worldwide (US$469 each)
    • $200 annual Australian dining credit
    • $200 annual overseas dining credit (limited countries)
    • Accor Plus Sliver membership ($399) – which includes a free nights accommodation (per year) at a range of hotels in the Accor group
    • Free Amazon Prime annual membership (up to $84, or just use it for annual membership at $79)
    • Fine Hotels & Resorts program (includes daily breakfast, early check-in, guaranteed 4pm check-out, $100 USD hotel credit etc)
    • Access to Plaza Premium airport lounges
    • Access to Amex Centurion lounges
    • Complimentary Worldwide Travel Insurance for primary cardholder and up to 4 Additional Platinum Card Members
    • Hilton Gold membership
    • Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status
    • Radisson Rewards Premium status
    • Hertz Gold Plus Rewards
    • Avis Preferred upgrade
    • 2.25 Membership Rewards points per $1 on all eligible purchases (which can be converted 2:1 to most airlines, but unfortunately SQ and EK are now 3:1 as of October last year)

There are other benefits which I haven't listed such as cruises and trains. Also as mentioned earlier, I've listed the approximate maximum value of each item, so definitely consider the real value to you (e.g. PP membership might be only worth $100 if you use it only twice).
