    I consider this normal price for China. Below $450 return starts to be worth talking about.

        A transit flight from Aus to China mainland cities may cost much less. But not sure available for visa free. PLUS, Qantas fights to Shanghai is shutting down and last few operating days I saw SYD-PVG only $196

                @eman resu: I've been to Vietnam, China and Japan multiple times and OP is talking our of his hat. China does have some great stuff no doubt, but it also has a lot of shit stuff. Given the choice, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan are my 1, 2, and 3 picks for SE Asia. China is about last.

      For reference, the last three planes flying CA165 PEK - MEL are aged 3.6yr / 1.1yr / 5.8yr.

      MEL-PEK usually uses A350-900, that's the best passenger jet you can find on the planet right now. SYD-PEK flies 777-300ER, yeah, a bit dated.
