Excellent headphones, great price. I've had my pair for 18+ months now and have zero complaints.

mine get audio sync issues when used with a nvidia shield

      • It is not for even small ears, used to touch my ears and create pressure. I liked XM5 and have been using it. Bose is perfect fit compared to both xm4 and 5. I have not Qc45 and XM5 for their advantages

      • check you are using the right codec, in the settings, as these by default use a high quality codec for music consumption (LDAC on Android).

It's a common thing though for some latency to occur with Bluetooth. You may just have to set a Bluetooth audio delay in your video player/streaming apps.

  • Which is better Sony WH-1000XM4 or Sennheiser Momentum 4?

    • For noise cancellation the sony is slightly better
For everything else the Senns are better

Ignore the neg, you are right. Tuning is largely subjective. Out of the box, the Sony's are more bass-heavy than the Sennheisers.

Something they do that the Sony's don't is audio via the USB C port, but the audio quality is allegedly worse than wireless (Probably doesn't utilise the internal DAC).

Battery on the Momentum 4 is 60hrs, 30hrs on the XM4, which is still plenty from my experience.

The XM4s fold up smaller but I have seen some people online with broken hinges. This could just be rough ownership though, I had the XM3 previously for 4 years and they didn't break, and they have the same design as my new XM4.

Edit: Something I really like about the Momentum 4 (tried them on when I worked in tech retail) is the smooth silicon headband. Much more durable and doesn't crack/fray like the pleather headband of the XM3/4. Note the silicon is in the inner part, the outer part has a fabric design which is more for aesthetics.

The Sony still seems to be an overall winner, especially if you fix the EQ on the heavy bass.

FWIW I bought the Momentum 4, but I'm going to return them (untested, based on the above rtings page) as I prefer ANC as slightly worse sound I won't notice, but much better ANC particularly on a flight, I will notice.

Only real gripe I'd say I have with the XM4s is the tuning out of the box, too much bass that just overpowers everything. Custom EQ fixes it up for the most part. Otherwise no other complaints.

      I've never tried tuning mine… I can't stand using their app…

      • I didnt love the tuning out of the box it never quite sounded right but using the Sony custom EQ wizard fixed it all for me.

FWIW I roughly based my custom eq off these guides, I didn't follow them exactly but it's simple to do and sounds heaps better. Give it a go.

    broken within two months

    • How so? My pair are tossed around in my backpack on a daily basis and have held up fine over the past 9 months of use. Was it crushed/squished?

    • +1

      why did you break them?

    • How was the warranty process?

If you went the replacement route, how are they going?

    • +1

3 years and counting for mine, haven’t had a single issue.

    • Had the older XM3 (same design and quality) for over 4 years and only the earcups and the headband frayed. headband isn't easily replaceable, so I sold them and bought the XM4 on sale when I next had a flight booked. Happy with the quality, no dramas.

  • Decent competitor to the Bose 700s nice price

  • I have the XM5s and really love the touch interface. How are the XM4s? Need one for the other half?

    • +4

The main difference is the quality of the noise cancelling. The XMS5 are rated better for low frequency sounds (engine noise etc). However that doesn't mean the XMS4 are bad, I still rate them as excellent.

There are obvious differences in the folding/design. Sound quality is basically the same.

Thanks! Read through some Reddit ones and it seems the XM4 is smaller and more compact, so that will be perfect!

    • I have both. I usually wear XM4s because the headband is more comfortable.

  • I found these to sound good but to be very hot and uncomfortable with horrible touch controls. Sold them within months.

    • Yeah same problem for me (except for the controls). Don't have the same issue with the qc45s

FYI, Amazon has these for the same price on Prime deal.

  • this or bose qc headphones?

    • personal preferences. I find the bose ones more comfy if you wanna wear it for a prolonged period of time. Sony has better bass.

Literally using my XM3 as I'm typing this, if my XM3 was failing I'd get this asap

    • Yeah same. But multipoint connection is hella handy and I'm tempted to upgrade just for that alone

      • I'm a sucker for the LDAC codec when connected to my Samsung. Can't do multipoint and LDAC, it drops back to the inferior SBC :(

    ty got 1

    • -1

      Who is ty ?

      Thomas Young?

  • anyone know how's the mic on these ? specially outdoor in a crowdy or windy situations

    • ok, but not the best

    • Mics on Sony are really bad outdoor no matter of generations.

  • This or Sennheiser Momentum 4s?

Context - I have O2 DAC/AMP and HD6xx for home, and use Buds2Pro as my portables.

Looking for something with a nice detailed sound and decent ANC, to take over a lot of jobs that the Buds2Pro currently have.
