Excellent headphones, great price. I've had my pair for 18+ months now and have zero complaints.

    • -4

mine get audio sync issues when used with a nvidia shield

      • -2

It is not for even small ears, used to touch my ears and create pressure. I liked XM5 and have been using it. Bose is perfect fit compared to both xm4 and 5. I have not Qc45 and XM5 for their advantages

check you are using the right codec, in the settings, as these by default use a high quality codec for music consumption (LDAC on Android).

It's a common thing though for some latency to occur with Bluetooth. You may just have to set a Bluetooth audio delay in your video player/streaming apps.

Why is this comment downvoted? Auto downvotes for JV?

        • lots of nvidia haters in these forums…

      • Have you connected it to the TV or the Shield? Connecting it directly to the Shield can improve this problem in my experience. Bluetooth Latency isn't amazing though: https://www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/sony/wh-1000xm4-wi…

Have you connected it to the TV or the Shield?

          Shield

It works fine when it connects, but later at some stage, it goes out of sync.

Turning off Dolby Audio Processing temporally fixed the issue, then after a while it goes out of sync again and turning Dolby Audio Processing on fixes it again.

          • @jv: Yeah, I recall having this problem on my old Bravia X9300E. What TV is the Shield connected to?

              • @jv: Interesting. Depending on the model, the Bluetooth version can also play a part. If you look at the following table, you'll find these kinds of cans aren't designed for super low latency: https://www.rtings.com/headphones/tests/connectivity/bluetoo…
RTINGS considers anything less than 150ms to be "Good".

                • @Maths Debater: It works fine much of the time though, then suddenly goes out of sync. Maybe due to the Shield? It's pretty old tech now.

                  • @jv: Possibly. Have you got the 2019 model? If it works most of the time, it must be software related.
Try change the Bluetooth connection Codec from aptX to SBC. This can be done in the menu "Device Preferences > Developer options > Bluetooth Audio Codec". You can only activate this in the developers menu first by tapping several times on the menu "About > Build".

                      Yes, the Shield Pro

Try change the Bluetooth connection Codec from aptX to SBC.

Didn't know about that… May try later tonight. thanks

@jv: Have the same issue with TCL.

If I turn off Bluetooth on my mobile I have no issues.

    • Got the XM3 for $40.09 during December sales via Amazon. It died the second I used it. Got a refund from Amazon. Then got it repaired by Sony. So much win.

      Sony CS is really good.

XM3s are pretty frigging good but don't think you can buy them new as they are an old model.

      • How did you get a refund without returning it to Amazon?

        • +1

Said they broke consumer law not providing me a repair or a replacement. Said I can keep it and they will refund me.

Also had something to do with being Amazon US as well and not able to have any stock.

    • They are good in terms of sound quality and battery life, but in terms of build quality they are crap, very fragile. Just google "sony wh-1000xm4 hinge broken", so many people get it broken in the first year of usage and Sony refuses to repair under warranty, they say it is mechanical issue and thus not covered. In my case it broke in 8 month of office usage, never took it outside, in a gym or any other non-ideal environment.

Which is better Sony WH-1000XM4 or Sennheiser Momentum 4?

    • +4

For noise cancellation the sony is slightly better
For everything else the Senns are better

      • +5

Ignore the neg, you are right. Tuning is largely subjective. Out of the box, the Sony's are more bass-heavy than the Sennheisers.

Something they do that the Sony's don't is audio via the USB C port, but the audio quality is allegedly worse than wireless (Probably doesn't utilise the internal DAC).

Battery on the Momentum 4 is 60hrs, 30hrs on the XM4, which is still plenty from my experience.

The XM4s fold up smaller but I have seen some people online with broken hinges. This could just be rough ownership though, I had the XM3 previously for 4 years and they didn't break, and they have the same design as my new XM4.

Edit: Something I really like about the Momentum 4 (tried them on when I worked in tech retail) is the smooth silicon headband. Much more durable and doesn't crack/fray like the pleather headband of the XM3/4. Note the silicon is in the inner part, the outer part has a fabric design which is more for aesthetics.

    • +5

The Sony still seems to be an overall winner, especially if you fix the EQ on the heavy bass.

      https://www.rtings.com/headphones/tools/compare/sony-wh-1000…

FWIW I bought the Momentum 4, but I'm going to return them (untested, based on the above rtings page) as I prefer ANC as slightly worse sound I won't notice, but much better ANC particularly on a flight, I will notice.

  • +1

Only real gripe I'd say I have with the XM4s is the tuning out of the box, too much bass that just overpowers everything. Custom EQ fixes it up for the most part. Otherwise no other complaints.

    • I've never tried tuning mine… I can't stand using their app…

      • I didnt love the tuning out of the box it never quite sounded right but using the Sony custom EQ wizard fixed it all for me.

      • +3

FWIW I roughly based my custom eq off these guides, I didn't follow them exactly but it's simple to do and sounds heaps better. Give it a go.

        • +3

          thanks

    broken within two months

    • How so? My pair are tossed around in my backpack on a daily basis and have held up fine over the past 9 months of use. Was it crushed/squished?

    • +11

      why did you break them?

    • How was the warranty process?

If you went the replacement route, how are they going?

      • asked for full package but I have lost those but eventually got through and replaced

        • How's the replacement?

    • +1

3 years and counting for mine, haven’t had a single issue.

    • +1

Had the older XM3 (same design and quality) for over 4 years and only the earcups and the headband frayed. headband isn't easily replaceable, so I sold them and bought the XM4 on sale when I next had a flight booked. Happy with the quality, no dramas.

  • Decent competitor to the Bose 700s nice price

  • I have the XM5s and really love the touch interface. How are the XM4s? Need one for the other half?

    • +6

The main difference is the quality of the noise cancelling. The XMS5 are rated better for low frequency sounds (engine noise etc). However that doesn't mean the XMS4 are bad, I still rate them as excellent.

There are obvious differences in the folding/design. Sound quality is basically the same.

      • +1

Thanks! Read through some Reddit ones and it seems the XM4 is smaller and more compact, so that will be perfect!

    • I have both. I usually wear XM4s because the headband is more comfortable.

  • +1

I found these to sound good but to be very hot and uncomfortable with horrible touch controls. Sold them within months.

    • Yeah same problem for me (except for the controls). Don't have the same issue with the qc45s

  • +2

FYI, Amazon has these for the same price on Prime deal.

  • this or bose qc headphones?

    • personal preferences. I find the bose ones more comfy if you wanna wear it for a prolonged period of time. Sony has better bass.

  • +4

Literally using my XM3 as I'm typing this, if my XM3 was failing I'd get this asap

    • +1

Yeah same. But multipoint connection is hella handy and I'm tempted to upgrade just for that alone

      • I'm a sucker for the LDAC codec when connected to my Samsung. Can't do multipoint and LDAC, it drops back to the inferior SBC :(

  • +1

    ty got 1

    • +1

      Who is ty ?

      Thomas Young?

  • anyone know how's the mic on these ? specially outdoor in a crowdy or windy situations

    • ok, but not the best

    • Mics on Sony are really bad outdoor no matter of generations.

  • This or Sennheiser Momentum 4s?

Context - I have O2 DAC/AMP and HD6xx for home, and use Buds2Pro as my portables.

Looking for something with a nice detailed sound and decent ANC, to take over a lot of jobs that the Buds2Pro currently have.

    • +1

I have the technics. Plus XM4 and QC45.

Technics are garbage. They creak and the ANC is unusable if you move around at all.
It’s a shame as the earpads and deep cups are very comfortable. And I quite like the tuning.

      • I thought it looked like marketing led product promotion. I'm sure every one of those reviews are paid for.

  • I've got a pair of Bose QC35ii - how much of an upgrade would this be? Used mainly for calls and meetings

    • +3

      Sidegrade tbh

  • Can anyone comment on how well this headset handles MS Teams calls with on iphone? Have a set of QC45s and its not great..

    • +2

Not great. I use them and people have told me that they can’t hear me very well and the mic picks up all surrounding noise.

      • You need something with boom arm unless you at home by yourself

  • Not sure if I should pull the trigger or wait for XM6.

    • There hasn't been a significant improvement since the XM3. You will be paying $550 for something basically the same.

  • +1

I love these. Only thing I miss is the ability on bose headphones to switch device from the headphones themselves. Having to find the connected device in the house and do a bluetooth disconnect is a pia.

  • +2

Still rocking my XM3's after picking them up a few years ago when they dropped to $199. Love the sound quality and noise cancellation on them.

I have literally been hit by a car while wearing them, sending the headphones flying down the road. They're still working and in great condition.

  • Can I get TRS? If I'm using coupon to buy $291 brother gift?

    • If the invoice says $300 or above

    • Add something else to make up the $300 invoice.

  • I have these and nearly every time I connect them on a new day, despite the volume being set low (volume slider shows Bluetooth symbol), I get blasted at high volume. I use them with an iPhone and these headphones only seem to take volume commands ‘after’ starting to play (on their first connect in several hours).

Has anyone had and fixed this issue?

  • Have had mine for over 2 years, amazing headphones. Not great for audio calls but noise cancelling is amazing. Occasionally disconnects now and touch controls can be hard to operate but otherwise highly recommended

  • Google "sony wh-1000xm4 hinge broken" before buying it. And yes, Sony doesn't repair this issue under warranty.

You can try to repair it yourself after buying replacement parts on AliExpress, but you need to disassemble them completely and there are so many fragile contacts inside. Personally, I managed to replace the hinge, but during the process I've accidently damaged one contact and they stopped working.
