15% cb with $30 cap for luggage at Cashrewards: https://www.cashrewards.com.au/store/amazon-australia

I got the $15 back for $100 purchase on Yello

I got the 75cm so it should cost me $210, which is okay for inflated Samsonite RRPs.

This is a relatively new model so I don't particulary care about the reviews. I've used a 55cm OC2LITE for well over 5 years as carry on and it's okay, but pretty banged up. I might get the 55cm Volant using Zip but it's slightly heavier because they are Polycarb v Polypropylene for the OC2Lite, but at the same time I don't really need a new carry on, I just like new shiny things.

I had switched to Antler last year and shared my experience in this post: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/817097 and since that post I have gone on 2 more overseas trips; a 2 month trip to Europe, North America and Asia, and a 3 week trip to HK, and the Antler is still going strong. But 80cm is massive, and I don't really need 4-6 pairs of sneakers when I travel. So I decided to size down.

I also recently bought a 68cm Antler from DJs for just over $200 that's also a new model, and made with Polycarb. I basically got this Samsonite because Amazon don't sell Antler and I can't resist a good cb and had to use my Yello offer.

Up vote for a great review OP. Truly amazing :D

  • Love samsonite cases for travel. My first one I used it for 10 years before replacing it with a bigger one (I still have my first one too). Highly recommend getting one with nets on both sides.

    2.9kg for 55cm, 4kg for 68cm

    • Is that relatively light or heavy?

      • They aren’t the lightest.

      • +1

That's heavy. The lightest Samsonite is about 2.9 kilos for 81cm. But it's quite expensive as well.

      • heavy i guess, given you only allow 7kg most airline
samsonite and antler lightest hand carry is around 1.9kg FYI

Polycarbonate v Polypropylene. I prefer Polycarb even though it's slightly heavier

    • too heavy compare to the shell one…

might get the 55cm Volant using Zip but it's slightly heavier because they are Polycarb v Polypropylene for the OC2Lite

    don't
2.9 kg is too heavy for 55cm size

I think my oc2lite is about 2.7kg, so not much of a difference. My polycarb 80cm Antler which has taken a beating has barely any scratches and damage. My carry on oc2lite has deep scratches and looks like shit. Granted, it's old, but it's carry on and I'm not throwing it around.

ideal weight for a carry-on is under 2kg. With bigger sizes that are normally checked in weight is not much of an issue. But this extra kilo makes a difference when you're limited to 7kg and want to travel without checked luggage. IMO wait for a deal on one of Samsonite's high end models. I've had my firelite for about 10 years, and it's still going strong. Can definitely recommend spending a bit more on a light carry on bag.

Most of the time I just use a backpack if it's a couple days, and carry on if the trip is, say, 5 days or so depending on destination, accomodation etc. I really don't care about the 1kg difference. Or I'll use a duffle that is way under 2kg ideal weight.

Most of my travel is international anyway, so 1kg is a non-issue. But thank you for your recommendation.

this one costs more but it has new balance branding on it lol https://www.myer.com.au/p/samsonite-spinner-68cm-exp-suitcas…

    • I love the look of that one

      • aesthetically it's been a great partnership. it's only available in Asian markets so it's lucky we get them here

      • Not sure about the NB but I like the “block” look.

lol I'm buying it as soon as there's a Myer cashback deal

  • I have one of these. Been on a few trips and is holding up well. I rate it.

  • FWIW 8 years ago I managed to get a Crumpler Dry Red #3 from Myer for $120 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/240830). Has been brilliant. 26L but for me it's more than big enough to carry clothes etc for a week, and if I'm away for longer then I use the laundry. If I forget something I need, I buy it there - but that rarely happens. Not treated with kid gloves but still looks fine as it is light, usually carry on, and easily fits overhead. I've taken it to China twice, Morocco three times, Spain, France, UK, Singapore, NZ and more plus many trips interstate and has been used by multiple people in the family. I guess the moral of the story is if you get something that is made well, then it is more likely to last.

The company struggled for a while with quality slipping, but was bought back by one of the original founders a few years ago. If they brought back this bag I'd happily buy one again….

  • How's this compared to the Samsonite Oc2lite? I just ordered the Samsonite Oc2lite last night.

    • Different materials/weight. And aesthetics, that's about it really

      • I realised you've used the Oc2lite. How was it? Would you recommend it? B

How are dimensions measured on suitcases? Is 55cm a diagonal or height (excluding wheels?). I'm trying to compare to existing luggage to get an idea of size……

    • 55cm will be the height usually including wheels. Around 55 is cabin size, 65+ is medium, 75+ will be large.

  • Many carriers now have restriction on max total measurement (L + W + H) = 158cm.
This means max you can check in is 75-77 sized suitcases right?

I wonder who would buy bigger suitcase than that eg 81 size if travelling by plane?

    • I imagine it would just go through oversized luggage?

  • I recently got this from an Iconic sale:

    • Good build
    • Light
    • Aesthetically pleasing
    • Good internal pockets with wet/laundry pocket

Does get scuffed easily so dont get attached to it.

    Good buy
