Main differences are 1536 vs 1080p recording. Removable battery for charging

  • Are these any use without the $50-$150 annual subscriptions?

    • +1

No. I regret buying it. Should have done my research rather than rushing out to buy one after I had a parcel stolen from my front door

      • why?

      • What would be better brand video battery doorbell?

    • Your Ring products provide their standard features (instant alerts, Live View, Two-Way Talk, and so on) without any subscription. Ring Protect Plans simply offer additional features for those who want them.

Ring Protect Plans simply offer additional features for those who want them.

"Additional features" such as actually recording what it sees.

Get another brand that doesn't charge for such a basic feature.

A subscription model for a doorbell. My God, what is this world coming to.

      • +1

It’s dystopian as (profanity) and people just accept it.

      • The doorbell doesn't require a subscription. Storage and playback of high definition videos on their servers requires a subscription.

I am in the market for a new camera doorbell and I went through a few forums to compare the current options in the market. One option that seem to be really good is Aqara G4 doorbell, which doesn't require subscription unless you want some advanced features like face recognition through apple homekit for which you need icloud subscriptions. Aqara G4 is currently on sale down to $149 from $240.

    • Did you see Eufy in your research? What did you think of them?

      • +2

Yes, I did and a lot of people complained about Eufy's getting caught with sending data to the cloud without consent and therefore they don't trust Eufy anymore whereas other believed that because they got caught, they are now under limelight therefore Eufy is very likely now to fix their shit.

        • Thanks. I have Eufy cameras and the doorbell. I was somewhat aware of their prior failings but reluctantly accepted them over the ease of use.

    • Is there anything that record to a microSD and/or a local NAS? (or free cloud drive). I know someone could just take the unit, but I think in most cases they would probably not as they would assume it had a cloud backup.

      • My understanding is that Aqara G4 lets you do that if it's hardwired. It has both the hardwiring and battery options.

  • +3

Ring has jacked up subscription prices several times and IMO is now taking advantage of its customers. Expect to see more of these sales using "the razor blade model." Cheap hardware to get your buy in but expensive subscription fees to milk you over the long term. Without a sub you can not record or review videos captured by Ring's video doorbell or security camera.
