That backplate bugs me. They lost IP dust and water ratings just so you can change the colour?
I hope Ifixit figure out how to make it super repairable because currently you cant even replace the battery!Tell me about it! I remember watching videos showing removing the back and then "tamper protection" stickers over the battery… WTF
It's quite easy to replace the battery. But there's tab that, once broken, voids your warranty.
I don't see it as an issue though since a battery failure during your warranty would be fixed under warranty. If the battery fails after your warranty ends, then it doesn't matter if you remove the tab at that point anyway.
Those stickers are flat out illegal in the US, and in Australia don't negate your statutory rights - they just make the argument more difficult.
I've long since been out of the loop, what's the point of these "Nothing" phones? I thought they were like that touch screen dumbphone thing, Light Phone or whatever it was called, but it seems not. Is this just a normal Android thing orrrr?
Normal Android, their own launcher
What's to stop someone cloning the launcher and putting it on any other phone that could run it then, if that's all it's got that's a selling point?
I've been meaning to Wikipedia the phone for years tbh, this is as close as I've ever come
What's to stop someone…
Nothing. (I'll see myself out)
Not quite. Pretty goddamn against Apple 9 times out of 10 and even if I wasn't, you wouldn't catch me paying half the price for their stuff.
I don't keep up with phones anymore because for the most part, there hasn't been any real innovation in the last decade. Cameras are great, 5G is cool, so what? The last big worthwhile thing I remember phones doing was NFC. I love NFC. This phone doesn't even have that.
But living under a rock? I'd say 95% of the country, minimum, has no idea the Nothing Phone exists at all, so I'm at least ahead of that, though honestly, I mostly commented to say your silly comment is the kind of thing that drives the Apple fanatics further into their rabbit hole. Apple suck because they're expensive. Samsung suck just as much, if not more, because they are also expensive as shit. The day either of them has a decent value option I'll care, but to blanket hate Apple is silly, unless you at least blanket hate similarly priced things like Samsung and the sort.
For better or worse, Apple have a history of actually innovating, and damn well invented the entirety of the modern smartphone landscape. So even this phone here, using Android, which was reworked from the ground up to compete with iOS in the day, wouldn't exist as is if not for Apple. So. That. I guess. idk lol.
Sorry can you name two things apple "innovated".
"Invented the modern smartphone landscape" is a bit rich. They managed to get capacitive touch working well and that's about it. Phones that were big slabs existed before the iphone. I phone just did things a little bit better - and then merged the phone with the iPod.
@nitens: A little? Thats being disingenuous. The difference between an iPhone and any other phone in 2007 was like comparing a Prius to a Ferrari. Obviously not the same today, but back in the day… nothing came close.
@zubzub: They took away our physical keyboards… that get's a neg from me.
And it took an age to get their apps sorted.
And forced carrier contracts onto people.
It wasn't the rosey start that everyone seems to think. They eventually got there and Gen 1 did innovate, but it certainly didn't invent anything much at all.
@nitens: My big hands do hate the touchscreen keyboard at times but I don’t think a physical keyboard would be better.
There’s a lot Apple does I don’t agree on.. I’m not ignorant to their scummy tactics and exorbitant prices but they are no different to many other businesses. I think Samsung is probably the worst in the smartphone world with their shit build quality and bloatware but they don’t seem to be slowing down.
@zubzub: @zubzub Some devices had both software and slide-out hardware keyboards, so best of both worlds.
With the miniaturization in the component business, a device with a hardware keyboard that used to be 22mm thick could now be under 10mm (for ref the S24 is 7.6mm)
@nitens: Except everyone switched to the “slab” after the iPhone came out.
@smartazz104: So… noticing something isnt a metric for innovation or invention. More likely a measure of brand recognition and advertising prowess. But like mentioned below by BinaryPirate apple swept in and took credit for a move that was already happening. They just accelerated it.
"Apple have a history of actually innovating, and damn well invented the entirety of the modern smartphone landscape"
I'm going to have to disagree with you there. With their ELI5 'smart'phone & walled garden, Apple condemned us to the modern smartphone market.
Samsung drove the nail into innovation with its hEyLoOk-iMaNiPhOnEtOo Galaxy S.The smartphone space pre-2006 was a wild west of innovation. I sincerely miss the trackpads/balls of early android devices. I would love to see where companies like HTC could've taken us had the mediocre majority not demanded rounded corners & non-existent frames.
@BinaryPirate: Have a +1
TBF - they did innovate us into this app store nightmare
@BinaryPirate: “Innovation” that didn’t affect most people.
@smartazz104: @smartazz104 innovation rarely affects "most people". Innovation occurs on the cutting edge which is, by definition, a fraction of the whole.
Also, wyd miss, "most people" is the reason we regularly get stuck with the lesser option, particularly in the tech space. I want the better option.
ps Everyone was already transitioning to the slab because that was direction smartphone makers were already headed.
I think it's the original created of Android or Nexus phones or something something and he feels Google lost their way, wanted to go back to vanilla Android experience he original intended and a company that is ethical toward in it's treatment of customers. Probably butchered that but you get the idea haha
Thanks for nothing
Could have been a pretty good phone, but was a no deal as soon as I heard the no NFC.
no wireless charging too
No NFC is a deal breaker.
I didn't care about wireless charging, but NFC got me through losing my wallet for a few days.
Even slightly old mid range phones have NFC.
It has a built in wallet attachment so I guess you are expected to put your cards in there. In your case losing your wallet means losing your phone too. So no better!
Nfc is my wallet. Haven't carried cash or cards for years
paying card surcharges for years eh? hand over your OZbargain badge
@wintersnow911: At Coles and Woolies? It is free!
@serpserpserp: Not gonna ask why you shop exclusively at coles and woolies, but not using gift cards? you sir, need to hand over your badge too.
@wintersnow911: Most places I go to dont have a surcharge these days
@Boioioioi: lucky you
How phones are still being made in 2024 without NFC is surprising.
Watched the videos, was really tempted, but no NFC is a deal breaker. Can't believe they didn't add it in. Do people in the US not use NFC much?
I guess it's a budget phone for those that still use their physical card in stores and aren't fussed about tapping their phone. Other than no NFC, it's pretty good for the price.
I have the Nothing Phone 1 and it's brilliant.mainly target for indian market
So Australia?
Lol
It is targeting a demographic of users like old people and young adults that prefer design and looks over functionality.
Those demographic especially in India (no offense intended) and other developing countries don't use NFC as retailers don't accept it.
If you want NFC just get Nothing Phone 2(a) or the upcoming community edition
Awaiting all the 3G decommissioning zealots to speak up and tell us 'phone might not work after September'.
this wait for community edition 2a
qr code payments are all the rage in other countries
Australian network bands all good ordering from Amazon UK?
Worth $140 more for 2a? https://www.amazon.com.au/Nothing-Storage-capacity-Unlocked-…
Nothing to see here
Pretty good review here… Don't usually like this bloke but it certainly peeked my interest.
A2 has lights on back, NFC, 2 lenses
CMF has slightly better CPU, 1 camera (other "camera" is just a depth sensor), no lights or NFCCMF is designed for India
incorrect, 7300 is not faster than the 7200 CPU.
dumb naming on mediatek's end…
plus cmf lacks OIS, slower charging
It annoys me how we got a replaceable back phone, but the battery isn't replaceable. I bet it's simply because there's no one out there making phones with it anymore so there's no readily available parts for it.
That being said, I'm tempted to buy it even if I won't daily drive it. I really love the design language, I love having screws back, I love plastic back, I love the accessories eco system that doesn't need a proprietary plug to work), and I love that a 200usd phone isn't skimping on bloody $2 cables and charging bricks.
FairPhone 5 has replaceable battery. In fact, many of its components are replacable, including camera, screen, speaker, USB-C port, …
Will this phone better than G54?
I have Nothing. Nothing. Nothing… If I don't have you… Or if I have you..
As a current Nothing smart watch owner
This brand is not far different from low cheap random Chinese products.
No nfc no deal What the hell were they thinking
Yeah so maybe if this goes to $199 then will be a good buy
Anyone know if this phone is carrier unlocked?
Does it come with the extra covers?
The covers appear to be an accessory which is an extra $40 or so
This is a Nothing deal.
