Sure, not the current model, but still up there in terms of a metal housing (vs plastic on the G5).
Overseas Amazon import, still half the price of domestic sellers but with Amazon warranty.

Good price for this camera if you're already invested in the Ubiquiti ecosystem.

These bullet models are best suited for narrower fields of view, for example an entranceway or corridor.
For wide areas such as whole front yards or driveways you'll prefer a Pro model (yet I still use mine for outdoor- sometimes the Pro doesn't quite cut it for the space needed, so more is better at the lower price point).
However, at more than twice the price, the Pro is an expensive bit of kit.

It's a massive discount on RRP, but wow - that's a very high price for an unremarkable camera.

The joys of being locked into the Ubiquiti ecosystem.

        Prosumer circlejerk.

      • Added bonus of the entire product line possibly going EoL and being left up shit creek, like the last time they did this to cameras. Looks like this happened in 2021, but I thought they'd discontinued another line around 2016 as well.

It is more like a upgrade/switch. Protect is much more superior and the newer g4 cameras are so much better/cheaper than g3.

          • @max900: You think it's an upgrade when your existing products just stop working?

            That's certainly… a point of view.

      • Getting locked in with the Apple of routers is a really bad idea. I have their APs, and they a great, but I absolutely refuse to go any further than that. A router company should not spend so much time on a slick gui. Any time spent on a slick gui is time not spent on real features. Mikrotik have a decent gui which would fit right into the 1990s but so many more features.

        • Agree that their network gear is excellent - it's expensive, but still decent value considering the quality, features and reliability. Their cameras are equally expensive, but without any justification considering their middling performance.

          • @klaw81: I was saying I strongly dislike ubiquiti network stuff. It lacks features and flexibility.

        • Ubiquiti wants to be the Apple of routers. But they only manage it so far as the gear looks pretty and has glowy lights. Quality firmware releases, documentation, product roadmaps… all a miserable fail.

Ubiquiti cameras are so expensive compared to other brands… crazy

It wouldn't be so bad if their cameras were actually really good, but they often get outperformed by cameras less than half the price. Their only real selling point is Unifi Protect, which is effectively a proprietary lock-in to a camera ecosystem that's no better than mediocre.

    • So so true. I had a single camera a while ago, it was mediocre and ran out of support after a period of time. I had to throw a working camera in the bin.

    • The added bonus of no subscription linked to them. I'm tempted to replace all my Nest cams as the yearly sub is getting ridiculous and updating is so slow.

      • +1

Reolink is my choice, heaps cheaper and they never drop supporting the product

      • There are plenty of alternative systems out there that don't require a subscription, and have decent performance but don't cost the earth.

    • I kind of like that they charge for the software within the hardware cost and don't demand a business model from subscription services. Each to their own. The bloody things just work too, which is refreshing and a massive saving of my time.

      • There's no doubting they work, but at what cost? A kit of 4 late-model cameras plus doorbell and compatible NVR would be upwards of $2000, which is about double the price of unquestionably superior systems from Dahua or Hikvision, and close to triple that of an equivalent Reolink system - all of which "just work" in the same way and have no subscription costs.

Granted the NVR system is also a decent router, but on the downside you're locked into an expensive ecosystem as well, whereas the 3 brands noted above are cross-compatible to some extent.

The G4 is the last generation.

For wide areas such as whole front yards or driveways

I think the new G5 Turret Ultra is where it’s at. It’s much cheaper ($179), the form factor is better for residential use, and there are many more mounting options than the bullet camera including on corners.

    • That's what I have my eye on but I'm holding out for Black Friday for a (hopefully) improved price.

    • I'm waiting for the G5 Turret Ultra too, doing a big upgrade on my current system when I get my hands on a bunch of them …

    • Turret

Wait we're allowed to setup turrets to protect our homes??

    • These aren't in stock anywhere. My order with PCCG just got cancelled due to supplier stock issue :(

      • They aren’t released yet. Coming out later this month.

        • Yeah I know. But preorders are being cancelled at PCCG.

  • It is not a massive saving, better off paying a little bit more and get the G5 Bullet.

  • "Supports 802.3af PoE for power" - how about data? I'd like to keep my WiFi as clear as possible so only mobile devices are on it.

    • +1

"Power Over Ethernet" - inclusive of data. Your wifi will be fine.

You might be out of your depth with these.

Question says a lot doesn't it.

    • +1

Just get reolink or dahua cameras.

  • +1

I was going to go with Unifi months ago for home security, but ended up being able to get a full Reolink system with NVR and 4 camera's for cheaper than this camera alone lol.

    • +4

Except it's not alone it has 2 buddies.

      • +1

You're right, I missed that. Even so the camera's I got with the Reolink have far better specs than this.

I'm considering the AI Pro with enhancer - colour night time vision to help me ID those little night-time louts and their car numberplate.
