Was $288 everywhere pre-EOFY and shops have for over $330+ now. So this is lowest I've seen at least.

    These are supposedly great

Why not just buy an Apple TV at this price?

Because it's a completely different device with a different purpose, lol.

This is a high-end audio-streamer for integration into an audio setup. An AppleTV is a set-top box for primarily designed for consuming av content with somewhat average audio components.

      • somewhat average audio components.

What does this even mean! It's all digital nowadays, there is literally no DAC in the Apple TV.

An Apple TV 4K supports Dolby Atmos and is known as a high quality streamer, not to mention supports Airplay 2. Given that it also supports passthrough audio, how would this device be any better?

Everything is software nowadays and the Apple TV 4K has support for pretty much everything under the sun including lossless passthrough audio.

Please advise how Apple TV can
          - play audio without having a TV on
          - connect to an amp

If not, don't suggest an Apple TV as an alternative. Apple, meet Orange…

tbh Apple TV is probably fine for you. If you don't know the benefits you probably don't need them and there's little point discussing the finer points if you're OK with plugging an HDMI into a receiver. But for audiophiles who might use the wealth of different audio formats and integration protocols it supports, or its extra I/O options, or its multi-room audio synching, or its integrated app etc. it's great device.

@zfa: your argument for this device is super confusing. 🫤 Why would audiophiles go to all the lengths of high quality audio to use airplay?

            • @peep20011: Some foodies love a burger every now and again, what can I say.

If you want to whack a bit of party music on across your synched up devices for a house disco then why not have the option of people using Airplay to queue tunes? You don't have always sit in the dark equidistant from your speakers and listen only to Tidal to enjoy your set up. Having a high-quality system that can 'play the whole piano', as they say, is great.

Just to make it absolutely clear to potential buyers who might be looking at older YouTube videos and reviews - DO NOT buy this if you're expecting it to do AirPlay casting, e.g. casting from a record player to homepods. WiiM removed that feature on the quiet in a recent firmware update and they've worked overtime deleting threads on their own support forum about it, and basically scrubbing whatever traces they can that the feature even existed. I ended up getting a full refund because I bought it solely for that purpose. It was an otherwise great little unit.

    • Wow, good to know. Not something I ever used but was an awesome feature to have. What a shame.

    • Anything you can recommend to cast (preferably Google Cast) from a turntable to assorted wireless speakers?

      • I'm now using a Behringer UFO202 and my iPhone and iPad in conjunction with an app called Quanta. If Android has an equivalent app it'd work the same way.
