MonsGeek M6 Mechanical Keyboard (Barebone) QMK Purple/Black $109 Delivered @ PC Case Gear

Please note that this is a barebone model, and you would need to buy switches and keycaps separately. If you are out there for keycaps for this keyboard, please note that this keyboard has two Bs (one for each hand). I found AKKO keycap sets to cover the layout most of the time, but double check if the keycap you are getting has all the right size keys (this has different sized CTRL, ALT, WIN, FN, Shift and spacebar keys compared to conventional tenkeyless keyboards)

It's a 65% Alice style layout aluminum keyboard that supports QMK/VIA. Alice layout is supposedly more ergonomic (as it's split and slanted accounting for natural hand position).

Alternatives are more expensive (i.e. Keychron Q8 (barebone) cost $199) or you lose out on some of the features (AKKO ACR Alice Pro is $99 from PCCG, but it has plastic body and does not support QMK/VIA). The fact that it's rectangular in shape would also make it easier to source a palm rest.

    This sounds like a nightmare

      wdym?

    • The layout is alright imo, it's not too difficult to get used to if you are used to touch typing.

Whether this layout is actually ergonomical… I am not 100% sure tbh.

      • I’ve found it definitely takes some strain off my wrists - not as much as a full on curved/raised ergonomic keyboard, but an improvement none the less

        • I'm assuming the more relevant benefit is if you have the ability or the cause to switch keyboards throughout the day, the RSI risk is hardly lower, but you can spread it out over more ancillary muscles..?

        • While I found this layout to be nice to type things on, I feel like for it to be truly ergonomic, you need that adjustments on the height of the each halves.

Alice layout feels like it's not also taking the movement of the fingers into account (i.e. ortholinear), though, as someone without a proper qualifications on ergonomics, I am basing this more on other cool looking keyboard (that I don't own) like ErgoDox.

keyboards are different and is a customised hobby. most of the work is done with this, but you get to really make it perfect by choosing the right switches and keycaps.

I'd take this + parts over any keyboard you could get at $109 with subpar keycap and switches.

      • Any recommendations for quality/price keycap from AliExpress?

Nice find OP. Plastic based Alice boards are usually more expensive - and aluminium ones are even more so.

Just a shame it’s only wired - otherwise I’d upgrade my plastic Alice base

One thing that piqued my interest is VIAL, apprently you can set "Combos", and have say Alt + 4 function like Alt + f4.

      • +1

Correct! They call it "layers", and you can set the keys you need to hold to enter a layer as well as whatever keys are in that layer.

        • Not layers, rather having specific combination be corresponding to something else. i.e. Fn layer on 65% would allow you to use say number row to function row, so you would need to press alt-fn-4 for Alt-F4, I have heard how VIAL works, it allow you to use it so that you can just press ALT + 4 for ALT-F4.

  • not a bad deal, but i hate this ugly layout, but still a great deal if you like alice layout. great find.'

MonsGeek M1W is pretty darn good if you can get it on sale, but i would buy elsewhere for a better deal.

It's like AUD$60+shipping for the barebones kit in China (Compared to like 100+ here), but that's technically a different model altogether because they use a different PCB/Controller/Firmware in their Chinese versions. (Which also end up never supporting QMK/VIA)

Now that there are finally QMK versions of the M1W, it's not so great a deal anymore.
