if you want to go to that extremes you probalby dont want to carry anything more deadly than pillows

btw. all these SUVs should come with a sliding cargo blind that contains everything below window line

          • +1

@tonyjzx: That's a little melodramatic.. Lol.. albeit there is an element of truth. If you do any defensive driving courses, they will often cover paying attention to what would become a projectile which is a great way to think. Many things will be a issue in an accident, but a tyre is a heavy mass, that's why they're always secured properly by manufacturers. I can't imagine a cargo blind doing anything against that force, but I am considering getting one in the next car anyway. Still plenty of options with full size spare, so no concerns there, but I had considered an X-Trail otherwise. Getting away from a CVT on the other hand if that is someone's preference, does seem much harder, so I'll probably end up with one of those.. haha..

@mrbargainz: mate… in the real world i'm bringing home stuff from bunnings ikea 9kg gas cylnders and building supplies inc. pipes and stuff

              i dont think about it

my kid is in the center seat with my partner

              it is what is is

a fitted tyre and wheel is like 25-30kg

get a bungee tie down netting

      • +1

        solveable with a little money

People with money aren't buying an x-trail.

      • +2

Towing a car for a flat?

And carrying a full size spare in the boot all the time?

So your gonna buy a second hand spare, stick it in your boot for x years losing a significant amount of storage space, on the off chance that you have a flat that occurs in a rural location

    • I'm willing to bet 99% of X-Trail owners take their vehicle off road maybe once per year. At most.

      • I'm not sure that would quite be the stat, but many wouldn't for sure! But even out of the ones that don't go off-road, a reasonable percentage will still do long country drives, which may, or may not, include unsealed / gravel tracks. Temporary spare tyres are intended for limited distances which are often much less than the nearest town in many parts of the country. But even worse, is if you're on 110Km/h roads and driving on a bike tyre only rated for 80Km/h and holding everyone up. Not my idea of a great relaxing holiday when it's so easily avoided, by just choosing another model / car manufacturer.

  • Is this 7 seat version

    • +2

You will need to go for the AWD if you want 7 seats. $41990 drive away.

      • Thamks Nick

  • if you don't mind haggling around and buying stock off the lot then a CX8 can be negotiated down to 40k drive away,

    • +2

i like the cx8 too but the problem i have with this is that its over 1,8 ton over this thing which is 1.5 ton and you dont have that much to show for it

sure its a bit longer load area but you're going to pay at the bowser

for me i'm only a two person, one kid household and something Outlander Xtrail RAV4 size is perfect

if you really need 7 seats then yeah go for it

  • +1

Its almost like corporate greed was fuelling inflation all along.

    Whowouldathought /s

    • +1

As opposed to all those periods of low inflation where corporations… weren't greedy?

It's weird how the inflation happened immediately after a period of extreme monetary expansion.

  • The Renault Koleos which is the same under the skin also has a promotion, $3000 off + 7yr warranty - from $38,700 driveaway

    • How heavy is this car?

      • 1558kg, bit lighter than the X-Trail

        • +6

the 'problem' is this Koleos is a based on the 'old' T32 Xtrail

so you get a 10yr old platform, 10yr old engine, 10yr old CVT and 10yr old safety

my feeling is that if you are paying 2024 dollars get a 2024 car, not a French skinned 10yr old xtrail

          • @tonyjzx: IMO the Koleos drives worse than the T32 X-trail too…

          • @tonyjzx: Fair call, I'm not such a fan of either because of the CVT. The safety isn't exactly 10yrs old though, it has modern radars and sensors. And the platform is still the CMF-C/D for the "new" X-Trail.

    • The Renault DOES NOT share a platform with this generation of X-Trail (T33). Only the previous T32 generation.

      • The platform has not fundamentally changed. It's called the CMF-C/D.

  • This, or keep my 18 year old subaru shirtbox

    • +4

But where will you keep your shirts?

      • In the brand new shirtbox being purchased

    • Must be one big shirtbox.

Wonder if they store ties in there too?

  • This or the Outlander brains trust?
It's hard not to go down the Chinese built car path!

    • +1

      Outlander for me

    • +1

They are both the same car. Just choose which one you like the look of and the included equipment.

      • +1

Surely the 10 year warranty on the Outlander wins out?

        • +3

Dealer service required for the full 10yesrs.

          • @Chinese: The first 5 years are $199 each.
It gets a little more expensive for the second 5 years.

I would do it for piece of mind for any CVT issues that may occur. (I’d also change the CVT fluid every 30K kms personally.)

After 10 years, it won’t owe you much.

    • +1

The interior storage is so much better on the Xtrail than the Outlander. Go have a look in the showrooms and you'll see what I mean.

Nissan service has been jacked up since T32 though. CVT Nissan dealer service is $600 every 70,000km

      • At least they are recommending the CVT be serviced. Not “sealed for life” like some manufacturers.

  • +4

I have driven this one, it's like driving a tractor, slow af, and no comfort

  • +1

I have a 2020 koleos black edition. 3 and half years of solid driving, currently 70k on clock, mil issues. Good cars.

  • +1

Post Covid after the supply shortages, the redesigned Mitsubishi Outlander (MY22 onwards) had a price hike of $10K.

Has anyone able to score a sub $40K deals on the Outlanders LS lately which should be feasible as they seems to have built up unsold inventory

    • +2

They look to be amazing value on the used market for a 2022 model ~$30K before negotiation. Still 8 years of risk free motoring (provided Mitsu services are used for the warranty).

      • +1

You will not finder a cheaper place service than the capped price service at the dealer

  • This may be just my opinion but you should be buying a hybrid a minimum if you want a good resale.

    • +2

The problem is inflated purchase price of hybrids(new or used) at a time of high interest rates.

If you are a short term car holder (3-5 years), then I agree.
If you plan to keep your car long term (8-10 years), then resale isn't a big concern.

    • Xtrails never really held value, traditional the models have lasted 10 years, with a refresh half way though, refresh always kills the older models.
Sometimes there was mini refreshers like when they killed the 2.0, which meant you were forced to buy a car that did 13l/100km instead of 10l/100 on highways

    • Any good options on a hybrid card with reasonable budge you can recommend?

      • +3

I need to go off topic from Nissan sorry.

Hybrids are apples and oranges. The best ones are from Toyota. Honda are OK too.
Subaru have them, but they don't save much fuel. Subaru have ditched their own hybrid tech to use Toyota's tech in the next Forester.

The big advantage of Toyota Hybrids is they are proven tech since they have been making the Prius for years, also the transmission. They use an eCVT which is a much simpler transmission than a traditional CVT (and more reliable).

If you are wanting an SUV, a RAV4 Hybrid is the best there is, but they are not cheap. Honda hybrids are 2nd place and are still up there in price.
If the budget is tight, then a hatch/sedan will be much cheaper. Check out a used Corolla Hybrid. In 2022 they upgraded the engine with more power and performance. They can be had used from ~$26K.

If you can get a novated lease through work, the BYD Sealion 6 PHEV looks to be great value.

        • +1

I agree on the Toyota hybrid option. The Corolla hybrid is a solid choice. Not to mention Toyota upgraded the 90kw 1.8L engine to an upgraded 103kw since November 2022 onwards mid refresh cycle. Not to say the 90kw version was bad by any means, but I would spend a little more for the 103kw refresh version. The battery on the refresh version is the newer lithium-ion type that Toyota claims reduced overall weight compared to the nickel metal hydride(NiMH) used in previous “90kw” Corolla hybrids.
Also the mid refresh hybrid has more magnets in the e-CVT transmission.

    • +1 hybrids in this day and age are what everyone is going for

  • +1

I still prefer the size and shape of the T31 xtrail. So much more boot space.

  • -2

Absolutely wild to me that anyone is buying a beige petrol SUV appliance car like this new these days, baking in another decade or two of petrol use when EVs are comparable in cost now.

    • +1

Which mid sized EV SUV is under $40k drive away?

      • Thats basically saying "why buy a heat pump hot water system for $4,000 when you can get a resistive element how water system for $2,500?"
Need to factor in the costs over the life of the vehicle.

        • +1

Ok. There isn’t one. Got it.

          • +1

@Brick Tamland: there isn't anything EV SUV under $40K. the X-trail is still good value.

            • @yellowfever: That was my impression too, was surprised too see an EV suggestion for this price and segment.

      • The MG ZS EV is as close as you will get to that price at $42,936 driveway in NSW. No fuel, no CVT, 7 year warranty are advantages.

It is classed as a compact SUV however. Not mid-sized.

        • It's a complex comparison.

You'll need an additional $10K+ to pay for fuel and servicing on the X-Trail, but you'll also need to be able to charge at home to be able to consider the EV, and not be planning any regular long road trips.

Absolutely an EV makes sense if you can meet those two conditions - but there will always be some smaller percentage of Australians who can't charge at home and/or need to make regular long trips. They're stuck with petrol for now.

          • @Nom: Yeah agree. MG ZS EV is worth the comparison but it's an old Chinese platform vs a new Japanese car. MG is an old EV platform and will be worth very little in a few years time. But for people changing at home and not needing regular road trips its a consideration if you really really wanted an EV in that price range

  • o. still remember that I bought xtrail st-l, it was 28k drive away in 2015.

    • +1

      BS Show us the invoice

      • my fault, it is ST…

    • I'm pretty sure a good deal for the ST-L was $32,000 back then.

  • Shares the same platform as Renault Koleos. Good Car

  • For anyone interested, there might be a refresh design language very soon on its way. The Qashqai just had its refresh. The new designs look a little like Chery but makes the car much nicer than the current look.

  • Japanese car companies are laughing all the way to their banks. Exchange rate plus COVID gouge ( Chip shortage) gave high profits on lower sales volumes. Prices here for Japanese production should be 20% lower.

    • That doesn't matter. Nobody is going to pass on a 20% reduction based on currency when automakers from other countries can charge roughly around the price range now.

You don't see Sony dropping prices because the competition can get away with higher margins. So why should they.

Once prices increase, it'll take for some very silly company to try to bring them down again.

  • +1

Seems like decent value considering the price 22 years ago in 2002 was $33,990 plus on-roads. Equivalent Nissan Rogue in USA starts at $42,700

  • Never buying a Nissan again, owned 2 Nissans previously (thinking quality Japanese cars), both had major cvt issues. The worst part was dealer support and Nissan customer service was the worst ever experienced.

    • How many km did they do before they had issues?

  • +1

As a counterpoint: I had CVT 4WD X-Trail for a long time, 2011-2023, since new. Did about 230,000km before I sold it. City and bush driving. Not a single problem with the CVT, ran like a dream. In fact, no significant problem with the vehicle at all, was a great purchase. But that's just one person's experience of course…

Replaced it with a new e-Power X-Trail. So far so good, only bummer is the lack of spare tire in the e-Power version (I made my own from a wheel from the wreckers, and take it in the boot when going long distances).

    • +1

Still drive a 2012 T31 4wd apart from 1 cv boot kit at 160,000k no issues at all
And nothing similar compares for boot space . Take out the rear draw and false floor and fold the back seats. Is why i am keeping it after looking at recent mid size vehicles

      • +1

Agree, that model had amazing usable cargo space. Subsequent models, and direct competitors, are not even close.
