My parents signed up to the senior plan to start next week. Why is this deal better than the senior plan they signed up on!?

  • What’s browsing like at 25mbps? Unnoticeable?

    • +1

25 is way more than what is required for browsing so yes absolutely fine. Remember even ADSL was fine for browsing and even streaming and that was slower at say 1.5MB/s (+/-) depending on your connection speed back then.

    • +1

Ads makes up a substantial volume of a website. Blocking ads will make everyday browsing a lot smoother

  • Anyone know the cheapest 100 speed nbn plan ATM?

  • +3

25/10 broadband in 2024 should retire. I have lived in a small town in China, the broadband starts 100Mbps and costs around 41 CNY per month (around $9 AUD). This is with China Telecom, their most expensive provider yet. And the service goes up to 1000 in that area, and pretty sure some other bigger cities offer up to 2500Mbps.

    • +1

The cheaper broadband is Asia is often associated with high density housing and comes with quality of life setbacks such as air pollution and traffic congestion, etc

      • +1

New Zealand has entered the chat. FTTP everywhere, 300/100 for $59, 1000/500 for $72,

$112 for 2000/2000 but you can run up to 8000/8000 if you inclined.

Stop spreading lies and nonsense as an excuse for a horrifically mismanaged national broadband network. It’s an absolute disgrace in a country as rich as Australia and with the density in inner capital cities that it’s so atrocious.

    • Australia tax.

  • +8

Why all the ridiculous comments on 25mbps? Ive streamed multiple devices for years on it no problem including 4k. It’s fine for video. I even watch all the free to air tv via without an antenna.

Unless you’re downloading a lot, it works fine for most peoples use cases.

    • Most users don't monitor their bandwidth usage patterns so they don't know the lower tier is sufficient

For example I know for a fact I can make use of 50mbps for work purposes but the general video streaming and YouTube by other household members are fine on 25mbps.

The only time where I can make use of 50+Mbps is when installing large games or updating Linux distros. But can just leave them on overnight

    • Yep, 100%. If you live by yourself and just watch Netflix/Prime, Zoom or Teams 25mps is ample. Netflix only stream at about 15 mps, so why are people concerned? Because the companies want your money, from the uneducated or uninformed.

I joined 4 days ago and it has been perfectly fine. No hassle connection. They give you a 14 day guarantee, any problems just cancel.

      • the rare occasions when I wish my connection is faster is when I need to download a game, or game updates.

for streaming, agree, that people usually have more bandwidth than they really need

      • +1

I joined up yesterday and accidentally signed up to the "seniors" plan which is 12/1, and with a 2 person household, it is still ok! Watched prime in 4k last night etc. And no probs browsing. I had to contact them to upgrade to the 25/10 plan which is the plan I meant to connect to, but they said it will take 24 hours to kick in. I can't believe I am excited about getting 25/10, it will seem like quite the upgrade! haha

    • Ditto.

  • +2

Flip charge an extra month in advance. I am currently paid to 13 August with another payment due now for Sept. If I want to cancel or move I need to cancel for Sept or lose my money as they do not refund.

    • ah i hate that. i was with TPG and they did that too but fortunately they would give a credit if they charged and you moved out as long as you gave them months notice

    • What this means? If we need to cancel, we need to cancel 30 days ahead?

      • See my comment below here

  • Spintel gave me $10 off for the cheapest plan to keep me..

    • How did u get that?

      • +2

He prolly just contacted em and said im gonna flip for $39 a month unless u offer me something to stay

    • it's not enough tho.. they charged me 60 this month for the same plan.. like you i came over for their 6 month deal but this plan with flip is 20 a month less now. I will continue my nomadic voyage through NBN retailers.

  • I'm considering NBN for the first time.

Been mostly happy with phone data but now want to up my home security with a camera or two.

Any reviews or recommendations for a DSL modem router?

    The D-Link DSL X1852E is $199 +delivery in this offer, $300+ elsewhere.

    Cheers.

    • What sort of NBN do you have? If you have the good stuff you only need a router; the fiberoptic modem will already be permanently affixed to your wall.

      • Will be first time nbn for an older property too. Fttn and an old school telephone connection.

The deal is byo modem router or buy theirs. Can I do better than the D-Link DSL X1852E at $199 +delivery?

Thanks for your interest, hope you're having a good one.

    • +1

Pick up a used Telstra Sagem F@st 5355 from ebay for $20-$40. Rock solid VDSL connection. I've binned more expensive modems, kept coming back to this.

      • +1

        Thanks for that @Its4me.

I did a whirlpool lookup and it seems to tick all the tech boxes. I'll double check with Flip because I'm less the tech minded and more the box headed.

        BargainOn

      • No go for VDSL2, according to Flip.
        Cheers.

  • +1

Double check if this join by 31st July and can schedule anytime after for this $39 offer?

    • I want to know thw same but too lazy to call (to date). Will call before 31st if nobody here reports back.

  • +1

    Thanks for sharing OP

  • Note the new customer promotion terms and conditions.

Promotional Pricing: This applies to new customers connecting for the first time only. Customers and or
householders previously connected with Flip at any address are not eligible for promotional pricing. Plans
    come with a promotional monthly price discount per month for the first 6 (six) months of connection only;
after which, the price goes back to the standard price as shown in the table above and it is not in conjunction
    with any other offer.

  • thanks OP, will sign up with your referral link….moving away from ABB which raised my plan to $79……what is the best process to set up? sign up with flip and wait til its active..and then cancel account with ABB? we have FTTC with a TPlink mesh… will our mesh system also work with Flip?

    • +4

When Flip is connected, they'll send you an email, you'll have to pull & plug the router cable in the NBN modem UNI, I.e. if ABB is in #1, Flip will be #2, then enter the username & password from email into router.
If you get stuck, plenty of other ISPs have instructions, youtubes.
As explained during signup, they recommend not cancelling current ISP until Flip is connected.

      • awesome! thanks for the advice @linoc66…NBN technology confuses me

      • +2

Those instructions are for FTTP, not FTTC.

        No need to pull cable.

        • +1

          Thanks @Its4me!

  • How does this compare to Belong? I'm on Belong 25/8, it disconnects all the time and I get outage emails at least once a month.

  • How long does it take to provision after your order is placed (FTTP)? Been waiting a few hours now.

    • it was 1pm for me on the day of activation

      • Thanks, mine ended up being connected around the same time.

  • I signed up in June when promotion was $39 for NBN12 (Value plan), only to see this is now $39 for NBN25 (premium). I called Flip asking for an upgrade but they refused - no room for negotiation. I was upset so requested to cancel the service in the same call. They showed no willingness for customer retention. Moving to Felix Unlimited.

  • Do they charge the card on signup or after the service is connected?

I want to be connected sometime in August.

    • +1

      They charge when it's provisioned/connected.

  • Thank you OP.. this post has finally motivated me to move away from my current ISP.. hopefully I can use the same modem..

    • +1

Should be fine, as long as your current one isn't firmware locked to the current ISP (possibly ways to unlock).
Flip should send an email with the new details to enter into the router interface
      E.g;
      Order Summary
      NBN Plan: Premium
      Modem: BYO
      Installation Address: Blah Blah Blah
Modem Username: Blah Blah [email protected]
      Modem Password: Blah Blah Blah

  • clicked on referral above link and hope both of us gets $15 :).

    • Wonder if they are like Leaptel whereby one is not entitled to Referral bonus while on special pricing.?

    • +1

Having seen the referral in this deal, I contacted flip about getting one, when I couldn't find anything about it on their website.
Response = "Unfortunately, we are not offering a referral program at this time."

  • How do I find my referral code? Can't seem to find it online.

    • Having seen the referral in this deal, I contacted flip about getting one, when I couldn't find anything about it on their website.
Response = "Unfortunately, we are not offering a referral program at this time."

  • I don't think referrals work anymore. I am a customer and can't find option to refer anywhere.

  • This hasn't expired and they have removed the "expires on the 31/07/2024" so is more an "Ongoing" thing for now by the looks of things.
Update: Now shows as 31/08/24. Flip must have just updated their site.

  • In Melbourne, closest server is Sydney, so went from 10km total trip for one PC to another between two houses to 2,000km trip making Plex not great.

  • Anyone else noticing a lot of packet loss with Flip? It seems the moment you have a couple of things happening (e.g downloading updates whilst trying to browse), the packet loss will spike up considerably, up to 10% or more, which sucks to use. This on the 25/10 plan, despite having QOS setup properly on my Opnsense box (I did not have this issue with TPG or Leaptel).

  • How long does it take to connect?

My existing provider plan ran out last night. I signed up at 8:30am and at 3:30pm, I'm still not online.

  • I've prob had 1/2 doz suppliers since getting FTTP, this is the first that left me wondering why I'm without connection for so long.
    When I signed up, ~20days prior to switch request, they sent me an email with;
    Order Summary
    Modem: BYO
    Modem Username: xxxxxxxxxx
    Modem Password: xxxxxxxxx

I believed like previous suppliers, I had to enter the username & password into my (BYO) asus router, no other info led me to believe otherwise.
Waiting… decided to try deleting username/password, select auto, apply, and away it went.
No idea what the username/password is for, sent an email asking 2nd Aug, still no reply, even a simply "can see your connected, any issues let us know".
Anyhow, for $40>$60 per month, it's doing the job I need it for.

  • Does Flip connect has 30 days notice to cancel service like exetel?

    • My understanding is: Their billing/accounts system generate new invoices for all accounts on the 01st of each month and emails them out a few days later. So if canceling ensure you let them know well in advance to the 01st. That way they can prevent it from auto billing the following month.

  • They did a credit check.

    • came here to say the same thing.

annoyed that I missed your comment.

      • Curious why it would matter? (don't mean in a private sense)
Their providing credit, natural to wanna make sure anyone's a safe bet.
Guessing any future lender doing a check would identify it's a telco that did one.
I find it odd they don't require prepay, like mobile.

        • Guessing any future lender doing a check would identify it's a telco that did one.

would be good if that was the case, but we will never know.

all I know I that enquiries stay on file for 5 or 7 years and my score went down ~50 pts as a result. When I get a new card a take roughly the same hit to the score, but get compensated a minimum 50k frequent flyer as a result.

hence given the credit hit, the benefit of this deal for me is questionable

      • @rzg or @powerhead, can you please advise which credit reporting agency does the credit check? TIA

        • +1

I noticed mine on GetCreditScore which I believe uses Equifax

  • Just signed up. Did everyone else have a quick connection? Is there anything special you need to do for activation? The email didn't indicate how to activate it.

    • About 2pm on the day set for activation. They use PPOE in your router, and you just update with the usernname/password. You will receive an email once it's activated.

      • Thanks for that. I actually set 26/8/24 as the date to sign up. So i supose it won't kick in till after lunch then if that's how they do their activations

        • That was just my experience. Of course your results may be different. The email you received once activated will contain your username/password. That can also be found if you login to your flip account.

          • @Kustard King: Got the activation email in the early afternoon. Had issues setting up because we needed to connect through a phone line and not an ethernet connection. Found a phone cable and connected it up. We are online and getting 26/9 speeds - which exceeds the 25/8 we paid for :-)

  • How suitable is 25/10 for teams / zoom?

    Thanks

    • +1

You mean video meetings? Could use dialup for that.
      I'm watching 1080p streaming atm

    • +1

I really hoped and wanted 25/10 to be good enough for our 2 person household….as $39 is a great price. But it simply was too laggy and too slow. And we don't download or upload big files. Struggled to watch Amazon Prime in 4k, would pause and need to buffer. Browsing sites like AliExpress was quite tedious. Kept doing speed tests on fast.com and Ookla and it only ever peaked at around 20mbps and hovered around 8 or 9 at night. I've actually signed up to the Dodo 100/20 deal at $64.80 per month.

      • Mine seems fine..and always around 25Mbits.

      • +1

Guessing FTTN? I'm FTTP, near midnight Sat WA, getting 23/9, 4ms, with vpn.
        Make enquiries with support?

I had issues at the start where it kept disconnecting ~ every hour for ~30 sec, but it sorted itself.
Got sms from them last week advising an am shutdown for NBN work, never noticed.
Also the only supplier from 1/2 doz who's ever sent an sms to advise.

I'll keep DoDo in mind though. I remember they had a terrible reputation years ago, somehow survived

  • Thanks OP, about to finish up third month of Optus NBN offer so perfect timing to churn!

  • Just connected to flip today on 25mbps plan, I was on Leaptel 50mbps plan.

2 people household here: It's just 1 desktop (ethernet) and my phone and my mother's phone connected to wifi. My TV is connected via ethernet but we rarely use streaming services.

Upon first comparison, streaming youtube on 1080p and browsing on my phone feels exactly the same.

I had trouble connecting to the internet upon setup with their username and password sent to me to my BYO modem but I called tech support and they did something on their end and I was online.

Leaptel bumped up the price to $74.95 for 50mbps…. bruh

    • PPPoE type connection needing to add username and password, correct?

      • +1

Yes, from whirlpool you can change to DHCP.

I take back what I said about my initial feedback…… Wifi and pages constantly won't initially load, its like it's not connecting to the server……and waiting for a response…… apparently this provider has alot of packet data loss and changing to DHCP may fix it.

I tried to send a whatsapp message and constantly theres the clock icon trying to send and im like FFS….. so I have to turn off wifi and make the message send through cellular data…. its messed up…

Edit: I just changed from PPPoE to DHCP in my modem settings, if this doesn't fix it, I am churning…… and I haven't even used it for 1 day. Tired of pages not initially loading.

      • +1

Update: I suggest to switch to DHCP, all my pages a loading and whatsapp messages are sending fine. I had no pages stuck on loading and everything seems to be as normal.

It's crazy how PPPoE is making customers have major packet loss.

        • Hey mate, mine was activated today and I'm just trying to set up (HFC), tried PPPoE with username and password from email, didn't work. Changed to DHCP and didn't work either. I'm on a modem from MyRepublic. Any ideas?

          • @Craze: I had the same problem, my username and password didn't work on the activation day. I had to call tech support, they did something on their end and the username and password worked.

Then 1 day later, I changed to DHCP and still working.

You may need to call tech support.

            • +1

@hasher22: I didn't configure my modem at all. Just left it as set up from superloop and it reconnected once flip connected me. Had been pretty solid this far. For $39/month I'm happy as. Wish this was the normal price for a 25/10 connection. Works fine for our needs and nearly half the price of what I was paying.

            • @hasher22: OK thanks I will ring up tech support then. Thanks for replying!

            • @hasher22: Thanks @hasher22, it was indeed on their end as I rang up and got it fixed now. Is there a reason to change to DHCP vs leaving as PPPoE?

              • +1

@Craze: Alot of people reporting packet loss from other forums.

For example, read my comment above, pages weren't loading, whatsapp messages weren't going through (stuck on the clock icon)…… when I switched to DHCP, the problems went away, all my pages loaded and whatsapp messages going through, instagram comments and facebook comments were loading properly…..

If you don't have that problem, then you're fine with PPPoE

                • @hasher22: It's been a three days now and seem to be OK, YouTube sometimes have a slight lag but everything else is OK.

Can't complain for the price, but good to know that I can switch to DHCP if I experience packet loss.

  • It says on their website that the deal expires on 30/09/2024. Do they extend this deal month to month?

    • You can order by 30/9 but put a future date for activation?

    • Seems like it but no way of knowing.
