I bought and I love it for ~$900 (combined cashback and discount on GG gift cards) Didn't realise I would love the Google/Android TV built in but I do. Sound is much better then some of the other TV's in this price range.

    • How did you find the 60hz refresh rate with Sports and movies?

      • Has been fine, I've watched cricket and AFL and hadn't noticed anything off putting.

    • +3

Geez I've hated the built in, so slow! A firestick solved it though and I love the rest of the tv :)

      • I agree, the built-in system is very slow. I also use the Firestick 4K instead. However, it's quite inconvenient when turning on the TV. I use the Firestick remote to turn on the TV, but I have to wait for the built-in system to load the screen, and then wait for the Firestick to load its screen.

Is there any way to turn off the built-in system completely and use only the Firestick?

    60 hz is so 2005.

Funny you should mention 2005. In that year I bought a Sharp Aquos LC-45G for $2,500, discounted at Myer from $6,999 RRP.

At the time, someone had "hacked" to be able to play native 1,080p via DVI without the huge A/V box (the size of a decent AVR) - needed a source scaler to 1,080p 60Hz IIRC. It lasted us a long time in a home theatre system, 45" was huge back then…

Old Sharp had great products. I bought a Sharp LC46LE835X in 2012 for $1592 and its still going strong now - no issues with the panel and the remote. Only using it in the spare room after upgrading to a Sony X90L a couple months ago.

        • +1

          I have a Sharp VCR which I use with a S90C :D

        • That range is legendary. I got the 70" around 2013 for around $1500 on some ridiculous jbhifi scam deal from here.. Had a 100hz mode, was legendary for sports and gaming. Upgraded to a LG G3 77 only last year, and honestly, aside from the obvs 4k upgrade in a lot of respects the sharp was superior, brighter than a 1000 suns.

I couldn't get rid of the Aquos, even giving it away to friends, and trying to sell it for 2-3months, nobody wants a 1080p set. Pained me, til someone answered the ad at like 11pm at night urgently and came and collected it, cause they had a son with severe autism and his tv died and he'd be up all night analyzing it freaking out.

Best possible retirement home for it, Sharp's probably still going strong, with some gamecube kid playing smash bros on it 24x7.

    Damn that seems cheap.

    • +4

      Be careful, it's sharp

  • +11

Sharp today isn’t the same Sharp as the old days is it?

    • +1

Not as sharp as they used to be, or maybe just a little bit more blunt.

    • +3

Owned by Foxconn which is arguably a positive.

      • Agreed. Its seems to be more reliable than a lot of known brands

    • +2

Still the same Sharp, panels from Japan, but it's owner is Foxconn now, who also make iPhones.

      • Foxconn makes a lot of crap too. Not everything gets the iPhone treatment.

        • As do all manufacturers, including Samsung and Sony. It depends on what price point they are targeting.

  • Strange, Good Guys website says you can click and collect from stores but its "out of stock" for click and collect via eBay…

I bought this TV and stacked with the 20% cashback through TCB which was paid about a month later. This TV is about what you'd expect for a 70" that is obtainable for $900 give or take. For built in speakers the sound is quite decent.. Goes very loud, rarely have to turn it up any further than about 10-15. The remote is terrible. The signal is very directional, the physical design of the remote is strange and the buttons are not nice to use. I don't use any of the smart functions and turn off any picture post-processing. The picture for me is fine. I haven't really noticed any ghosting in dark scenes for example. My unit has some banding noticable on the bottom half of the panel. Don't notice it most of the time or only if I'm looking for it.

If I had to buy again, I'd probably spend $2-300 more on a slightly better TV at the expense of say 5" or so.

    • I like the remote, find it quite decent and comfortable to hold with the bend in its design. Each to their own :)
Picture a sound is impressive at this price point.

  • I know it’s anecdotal but I will never buy a sharp 70” again. Got a bunch of dim sections all over the tv after a while. Very annoying as it was just outside of warranty.

    • +1

how old is it? have to checked ACCC?

      • -2

        Yeah no luck there unfortunately.

    • +1

Same, bought 70" sharp for around $900, and later started to notice lots of "shadow" bands all over the screen. They are pretty noticeable on grey backgrounds or dim scenes.
But hey, at least panel is made in Japan, right

  • This feels like a moment from the Grinch "are you two still alive?".

  • Arghh doesn’t post to Canberra? Not sure why…..

    • Do you have Good Guys in Canberra?

      • +4

If we ever managed to get "Good Guys" in Canberra this country would be in a lot better shape, but sadly, still just politicians :-p

however in seriousness there is - e.g. Fyshwick

    • +2

That's because there are no good guys in Canberra 😜

Shame, just how CHINA has trashed the nsme MG. This has trashed the SHARP AQUOS name, Which was a great tv.

  • Sharp Aquos? I swear that's the name of my previous phone…

    • +1

Ahead of their time too, particularly the Sharp Aquos Crystal from 2014. Still makes them for the Japanese market.

  • How about TCL 75 Inch C655 QLED 4K Google TV $947 Delivered
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/852742

    • Is this still available? I am kicking myself for missing it

      • Yes but I believe its now $969

  • Long gone are the days when Japan made quality appliances…

    • FYI: Sharp’s TV manufacturing business is no longer owned by the original Japanese Sharp company, nor are these TVs made in Japan. Therefore, Japan has little relevance in this context.

      • The panel in this TV is made in Japan, go take a look in-store.
Although nowadays, I'd argue Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese made tech is all on par if the QC is there.

        • Panel is made by a robot whether made in Japan, SK or China. Panels are reliable - when is the last time you saw a TV with dead pixels.

The unreliable parts of a TV are everything else, the board, the ribbon cable connection, the backlight. compared to this TV made by a low cost manufacturer in Malaysia, I would prefer a chinese made TCL.

          • @greatlamp: Ewwwww TCL, no thanks. Wouldn't consider TCL in my home, that brand is known for being cheap crap. Take a look at the reviews online.
May as well buy Kogan branded TV's if you are going that low.

            • @SimAus007: I bought a bottom model P735 a couple of years ago and I can't fault it. Current models are going to be much better.

TCL no longer make garbage, old reviews are not relevant.

              • @greatlamp: Sure ;) It's a bottom of the line brand.

                • @SimAus007: Who cares about knowledge when we have stereotypes!

                  • @greatlamp: How do you think Apple commands the largest margins of tech in the world ;)

                    • @SimAus007: Not really relevant is it? They sell phones for $2000 that cost $200-$300 to produce

                      • @greatlamp: Much more than $200-$300, screen and processor alone (which is not made by Apple). But it's an accurate comparison that brand and stereotypes, AKA what people are prepared to pay, for certain brands, is based on perceptions.
Positive (and negative) stereotypes mean a lot to people.

                        • @SimAus007: Like I said before, I don't get your point. Brand perceptions and stereotypes have little to do with build quality.

You should look up estimates of Apple's build cost, you are relying on retail prices of parts.

                          • @greatlamp: Nope, wholesale (estimated) prices are readily available.
TCL has a stereotype for a reason, I am not saying they can't make good stuff, but it's unlikely as that is not their segment in the market (value proposition), they are after the low-hanging fruit in the market, people who don't care about a quality brand. A brand in itself has a certain perceived quality.
Anyway, agree to disagree, I guess. Have a good weekend :)

                            • @SimAus007: They aren't making exclusively cheap products based on their product range. They are cutting margins to gain brand recognition overseas. It's marketing.

I purchased one unit 2 days ago and so far its been great. I had the local store match the eBay discount. It might not be for everyone but if you like me and upgrading from a 10yr+ TV, it will suit you fine.
