    Looks cool.

    Travel router aye?

If anyone is in the market for one of these, just letting you know for $20 extra you can get the GL iNet Beryl which has a 4.6 rating on Amazon from some 1800 votes. Similar price can be found on Aliexpress, but obviously with a greater wait.

  • Would this be the option for me to establish my own wifi network in a hotel room, hotspot internet from my phone, and then stream via a chromecast hdmi dongle to the tv in room?
Is there a better option anyone knows of?
Sick of not being able to watch Netflix on a tv when im travelling for work!!

    • +2

Get a firestick. Load it up with your netflix account then just take it with you and plug it into any tv.

      • I'll look into this! Much easier option by the looks of it. Thanks!

They are on sale for prime day too.

Get a GL.inet instead of this Asus travel router though.

Yeah I've taken a spare google TV for this use in hotel rooms, you may still have to hotspot your own wifi as you don't always have access to hotel wifi depending on their setup (or there was no way to scroll to the password box during setup).

A lot of places have built-in Chromecasts but doesn't take up much room to bring your own anyway.

You seem to have a lot of free time while traveling, you must be a politician ?

          • +1

@tony09: Fit it in, between the long lunches and girly bars ;P

      • I left mine on my last trip to Japan…

    • The GL iNet devices are ideal for this though as they're very compact and allow you to use devices like the firestick without using your own data (assuming they offer some sort of free wifi at the hotels). But of course that's two devices extra instead of one (just depends how important your data is to you I guess, or how poor the reception is where you travel).

    • I carry my glinet router and a cheap Chromecast with me all the time.

      • Which one, Beryl AX as mentioned above?

May keep an eye out on Prime Day. I think you'd want one with a sim card port perhaps.

Easy enough to hotspot your mobile anyway & noone goes on holidays to sit in the room watching Netflix all day.

Yeah I have berryl AX, bought it for $115. It doesn't have a simcard but you can plug your phone in it for wifi.

These days it's easy to get an eSim so I got myself a Motorola G54 to use as a travel router. Not a bad setup for a total of $265 that I cluded a physical router and a phone.

          • @abs898: That sounds like an ok setup, do you use that phone instead of your main one, or carry all that around?

Guess the main benefit is you aren't running your main phone hot using hotspot I guess

The router idea is mainly to try and connect to the hotel wifi then use for multiple devices. Otherwise chromecast and hotspot works ok if you have enough data and or esim.

            • @G-rig: I carry the spare one as hotspot in my backpack and the two of us use our phones to hotspot off it.

Router makes it easier to connect and price and extra later of security to the hotels public wifi. Have our VPN setup and DNS

              • @abs898: Cool that sounds good can't go wrong with some extra security at the router level.

If you already travel with an iPad, I just use a USB-C to HDMI adapter to plug directly into TV. Can watch downloaded shows or hotspot from phone.

      • I travel with my phone, no iPad :(

  • Am I correct to assume that these devices allow for secure access to public wifi, hotel wifi, Airbnb wifi etc, without necessarily needing to have a VPN connected?

Or do you still need to have a VPN connected once you are piggy backing off the host network to ensure everything is secure?

  • What is the best option with SIM card options and built in battery so can use when travelling. Need to connect work phone to receive wifi calling using when overseas.
    Anyone have any idea?

  • +2

Handy for those that have other ASUS routers at home and can utilise AiMesh support when not travelling.

  • Got one when they were in stock, thanks OP.
