"Anyone here use Aeroplan and have feedback on how their awards availability stacks up against Velocity e.g. when booking Singapore Airlines long haul?"

Some useful data points: AP redemptions can be quite good either far in advance (e.g. 355 days) on long haul routes to/from Europe, or to/from North America on carriers like EVA. The best redemptions come from flying anyone BUT Air Canada, based on a generous partner redemption chart. For instance, can fly Australia<->Europe for 220K on Singapore; Taipei->Canada for 70K on EVA, all in business. United redemptions can be plentiful at T-30 days or so. There's lots of articles out there on Australian Frequent Flyer / Point Hacks. But even with these bonuses, have to spend a lot of time to get good value. Have used it for both routes mentioned above. Seats.aero can be helpful for finding availability.

    • I can hardly find business class from MEL to SIN leg, and found SIN-LHR leg for 80K business class certain days for 4 ppl. Can we convert aeroplan to Velocity without converting to KF? I found Velocity has Qatar Air to Europe as well using points, but not aeroplan. Yea seems like going Canada for 75k is best deal. Thanks.

      • no you can't

        • Yeah, wonder with 125% Bonus if worth to buy and convert to KF. Reckon more business seats booking through SIA compared to aero.

    • By taipei to canada I assume you mean only from taipei to canada. I wonder if there are any decent value redemptions around AUS=>Asia => Canada

      • In principle it should be about 100K; in practice, there is very little availability (in business at least) on EVA. Singapore does pop up on occasion but as mentioned above, can be tricky.

        • yeah EVA is hard all around for redemptions…

  • +12

The best redemptions are Australia to SEA (one stop through SIN) in business. 45k each way plus taxes.

In the case of this deal, CAD$2800 gets you two people return in J to SIN, HKT, PEN, SGN, BKK, DPS, +++ on Singapore Airlines from Melbourne. Bargain if you see the availability you want.

That’s just A$1500pp (plus minimal taxes) return J on SQ.

    • +3

In terms of pure bang for buck, business class flights to North America can be even more effective (up to 14 cents per point vs. 8.2 cents per point for SEA).

For example, MEL-SFO on UA can be had for 82,600 points + $189.20 CAD, which would set you back upwards of $10,000 AUD if you paid in cash. Availability is not as good as SEA though, so YMMV.

      • Yes I was definitely taking into account availability.

      • Availability is not good. You mean there is no availability. I can’t find a single business class rewards seat for that route over the next 11 months.

        • +1

There's quite a few available 2-4 weeks out

Never heard of AUS-SIN-SEA for 45k in biz. Just checked on Aeroplan too and there was nothing remotely similar (for either close-in dates or nearly a year out). Do you have more details for such a redemption?

      • Curious too

        • I booked MEL-SIN-DPS for 45k in biz (early November 2024) around 2 weeks ago, and there were plenty of dates available at that time. I recommend searching with seats.aero.

          • @Ozybargdias: Yea ur right, plenty of biz class to DPS but unfortunately none to Europe worth mentioning. Thanks

            • +1

@Bargain-er: Arghh - just realised that SEA was for Southeast Asia and not Seattle :D

              • @smokeymr: Haha yea Seattle for 45K will be too good to be true.

                • @Bargain-er: Yeah! In true ozbargain spirit, I was considering booking such a trip just for the hell of it :)

      • What’s your origin city? It’s calculated by miles, so may be stretching from SYD (and others) to some SEA ports.

Having said that I’ve also found MEL-SYD-SIN for 45k on VA and then SQ.

      • I booked the NYE ticket to bangkok in Apr, one way by SQ

Question from a points NOOB haiyaaa:

Looking to travel do the UK in April/May, getting 65k+taxes each way - considering flights are about $1500, its not really worthwhile using points for economy, right?

    TIA

    • +2

That cash price is pretty good. Best bang for buck for points is always premium cabins. But last min economy sometimes worth it. At $1500 return, I'm stumping up the cash.

      • -2

The cash price isn't amazing tbh, when Cathay are doing $1260 atm, but it is what it is… Thanks for sharing your thoughts :)

  • each point costs approximately 0.0179 AUD if 2800CAD is spent

    • +1

That makes Sydney to Vancouver return via SFO just under 1k in Economy (AUD $786 + CAD $174.60) or around AUD $1606 direct in Business.

  • Do you have to buy your tickets using CAD when booking award flights with points?

  • +1

I was able to buy 60k + 75k bonus points for CAD $2100 just now, the tiers may have changed?

Seems to be the sweet spot to reach 180k points, for those who got the HSBC 50K Aeroplan deal to redeem the 4 * 45k business class tickets.

    • whats this HSBC 50K deal you speak of?

    • Nicely done. Spent my 50k bonus, but four 45k J tickets for ~A$2300 is unreal

    • Did it bump your 50K status to the next tier? Which destination did u get with 45K points? Thanks

      • Not sure I haven't booked any flights yet.
The flights eligible for 45k business class is anything under 5k in miles (SEA and Japan)

        • I ve been looking at the aeroplan app… Kinda hard to find biz class for 4 ppl.. Makes me wonder if it's worth it to accumulate aeroplan points… 🤔🤔🤔

          • @Bargain-er: 4 people on the same flight all in business would be difficult for sure as airlines don't tend to release that many award seats unless its close in to the fly date

            • @peekamoo: True, just looking at Mel Tokyo via app but can't find 45k biz class. Something wrong with my search skill. How did you find it? Via website?

              • @Bargain-er: seats.aero can help.
But also MEL -> HND is over 5000 miles so it would be 60k points instead.
Also for ANA flights, you need to call Aeroplan to check availability/book as it does not appear on the site when searching.

                • @peekamoo: Yea, i was keen to buy aeroplan points with this 125%. However, the difficulties to find seats makes me wonder if I should use other FF points. Thanks

                • @peekamoo: Did you have any issues calling ANA and booking and do you know if you can use VFF with ANA? Thanks

                  • +1

@svanaut: I've never called ANA to book, only Aeroplan to check availability on their end.

VFF also works but at slightly more expensive e.g. SYD to HND 78K VFF + 155 tax

    • The threshold for 125% bonus seems to be targeted. It is 60000 miles for some accounts.

      • Interesting, I'm Aeroplan 50k Elite status that could be it. Or I'm just lucky…

  • Tried to login as was interested in buying some points (saw a business flight from BNE to SIN) but my account has been de-activated and need to call them to sort out the issue.

A search online appears to show this happens quite often to people and those who are complaining it can take three months for them to re-activate your account.
