Has anyone actually paid $100 for this and found that it was beneficial? Not having a go, genuinely curious

    • +5

It's always been free! I gave it a try (for free) a couple of years ago and it was another waste of mb for me. It's just a guided meditation app with a diary

    • +5

It's good to try to see what works for you. If it does work for you, the RRP is a bargain, let alone free. Personally, I prefer (and benefit from) keeping my mental health tools offline. I do this by setting an 'anchor' each day, something that I do daily which will remind me to perform deep breathing, gratitude, etc. This might be after brushing teeth for example.

    • +2

I use it. I really recommend giving it a try.

I use Calm for sleep, and it's been a game-changer for me. The sleep stories have been the only thing that have ever reliably helped me sleep more quickly - sleeping tablets, melatonin, pre-sleep routines etc never really stopped racing thoughts and insomnia. (That said, I can't see whether this app has sleep stories, or just sleep-focused meditations). My Calm subscription was $25 or something, and I have never once even considered not renewing.

      • what's a sleep story?

        • +5

Something to listen to so you don’t have to listen to your own thoughts.

          • @WhyAmICommenting: are sleep stories not available free anywhere else? podcasts, youtube?

            • +1

              @fredblogs: Yes, they are.

            • +2

@fredblogs: They are, yes - but I got Calm about 8 years ago, and they weren't as readily available then. Erik Braa, one of my favourite narrators from Calm, now has his own sleep story podcast now, for example: https://sleepytime.thebraacast.com. I also use the meditation component of Calm as well, though, so it's very simple having everything in one place.

Yes, I purchased the Lifetime pass after a free 1 year trial. I was so glad to have an alternate to Headspace, which had become greedy and lackluster of late. The straw that broke the camel's back was when they introduced a "Privelage Check" meditation.

The Balance lifetime pass cost $200ish but I'm happy to support the few app developers left in the market that aren't consumed by corporate greed.

    • +5

I did the free trial last year and signed up this year with a 50% or so discount. I like the app and have a few go-to meditations but mostly it was to support the developers.

    • +5

I've paid for the lifetime pass and it's one of the best apps I've ever used. They're also constantly adding new techniques and soundscapes to it which has been invaluable for me.

    • +2

      Bought the lifetime licence. Yes.

Compare the cost of this to a visit to a psychologist.

    • +4

      Very very useful app.
I also bought the lifetime subscription after using it free for the year.

I'm impressed with the updates they continue to provide.

One of the best features I like is the focus sounds for work and getting into the zone/flow. I can easily do an hour's work and the time flies by.

The sleep sessions are great too and use regularly too.

Highly recommend and encourage to support the team as they do great work.

I got the free subscription for a year and bought the lifetime subscription after that. I rate it

    • +1

Yes. I did the year and just paid for a lifetime subscription. It's a very good supplement to therapy.

    • I did the free trial and then bought the lifetime plan. It's easily better than any of the alternatives and not by a small amount. I tried just about every single one someone recommended.. and the majority were underwhelming, very basic and annoying apps, or the meditations just weren't as good.

After spending so much time with it, if I had to make the choice again, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

    • My partner and I were on the free trial for a few years. After, I thought it was only fair to support the developers. We got a lifetime pass and have had no regrets since; we continue to benefit tremendously from this app. I've said this in a similar thread but this app saved our lives during COVID times especially when help for mental health was scarce. It helped us start a meditation practice where other apps failed (including Headspace and Calm). A lifetime sub was a small price to pay for a number of features I couldn't find elsewhere: professionally-produced content with consistent branding and quality, regular content updates, a way to personalize our meditation, Plans that gently help us start and build up our meditation practice, Singles for specific types of help, Sleep to help wind-down for sleep or rest, and tracking meditations and related mindfulness skills over time. It's simple, very easy to use and navigate, and every single meditation has been consistently useful and well-made. If you haven't yet, give the trial a go, because even THAT had such tremendous value for us in the long term.

I tired the this free time a couple of years ago, I wonder if I can sign up again for it given that?

I found it useful but not amazing…

I only used it for a few weeks before in stopped but that's more my fault maybe, I was not in a good state…

    • +1

Use a different apple id account or playstore account as afaik the free trial is tied through respective google or apple accounts

  • I am currently on the 1 year free trial can I renew with this for free? Or can I save my progress and sign up again for the trial

    • No and no.

    • Not through same apple or google account. Use a different store account

  • If you tried it already and used your appleid you cant do it anymore, so never sign up using the appleid

    • How do you sign up on an apple product without using an Apple ID?

      • Use email

  • +3

This is actually one of the best meditation apps I know of, maybe on same level as Headspace. It's clean, to the point, has fun little level-up mechanics. I think its perfect for beginners or casual users. Has kids stuff too. High recommend from me. Although, my free year expires this oct and paying $100 for it is a bit scary..

    • +2

I’m waiting for the lifetime discount

  • +2

Can you sign up for free trial, then cancel? or do you need to cancel closer to when trial finishes? (to avoid getting charged if you forget)

    • +4

Yes you can sign up then cancel and it is still valid for the year.

      • +1

        Perfect. I hate setting reminders.

        • Yeah sometimes i forget to set reminders too.. a meditation app might help.

  • Thanks OP

  • I just bought a vibrating and heated eye massager with soothing sounds (or bluetooth if you prefer). It only runs for a 10 min cycle but I often wake up with it still on.

    • links? :)

      • I bought it from the op shop.. but you can find them on amazon, just search vibrating eye massager. Mine looks like this but has sound and bluetooth:
        Amazon

    • never used this kind of massager, do i always need to sleep on my back? can i turn my head?

      • I haven't tried it sideways, mine runs for 10 mins and I normally take it off but lately I've been falling asleep before the 10 min cycle finishes.

I'll try it on my side tonight and report back.. but info may be of limited use as my model won't be the same as whatever you acquire…

      • It's perfectly comfortable while lying on side.

        • you are awesome

  • Thanks. I'll give it a go.

  • Use smiling mind app from AppStore instead. It’s Australian govt funded and is pretty decent. Fee for life. I also got notification that they are going to have new app soon so looking forward to it. My kid loves the kids mode.

    • Smiling Mind is absolutely great for free, but there's really no comparison. It's almost as stark as a kids drawing versus a Picasso. The Balance application itself is so much more enjoyable to use and well made and the meditations and meditation paths are so fluid and better quality. I did the free year and during that I tried Smiling Mind and all the other popular ones and then signed up for the lifetime plan with these guys. It was way better than any of the others and actually makes you want to use it more which is worth it in itself. I did wait until lifetime was on sale though.

  • +2

You have to add your credit card details to get the free trial, I think I'll pass.

  • use zippay one time card for this kind of payments. if you forget to cancel the subscription it cannot charge from you.
