LG Neochef 42L Black Microwave MS4236DB $206 in-Store ($9.99 Delivery Fee) @ Stan Cash

480

Need a new microwave, this one seems to get good reviews and Stan Cash has it for a good price.
Note: Appliances Online won't price match with Stan Cash, but they will price match Betta Electrical (same company - BSR Group), which has it listed for a similar price including deliver ($219).
The advantage of Appliances online is they will take the old appliance and packaging of the new one - so just depends if you want to save a little and pick up for $206 (if a store is near you) or have the full service for $219 (via Appliances Online).

This is a similar model to the one we have. I quite like it but just be aware it might have the same issue with wifi 2.4g cutting out when this is in use lol

    • +1

“Reheating dinner kids, turn off your devices and come to the table…”

    • +3

Same microwave and the exact same issue but as stated only affects 2.4ghz network. Everything connected on 5ghz stays online.

        • +8

If that were true 2.4ghz wifi everywhere would be giving people cancer m8

          • -4

            @turkz1: It is - slowly.

          • +1

@turkz1: It is also why you can cook your food next to your wifi. You should try it out

        • +3

Please support such claims with proven factual research, otherwise you will considered yet another ignorant fool spewing misinformation on the internet.

            • +1

@jimmej: how mature. So have you adequately researched, tested and identified a correlation between particular radio waves, microwaves and cancer?

Please share your knowledge. Which radio frequency does this microwave operate in, why does it cause interference with 2.4ghz and how does it present a risk health.

              • @Captain Cheapskate: I can help with starting your research. ARPANSA is the best pace to start.

You could also try the FDA which clearly states you should not be using a microwave with a defective shield.

                https://www.fda.gov/radiation-emitting-products/resources-yo…

Lots of keyboard warriors willing to down vote my personal opinion which if they took 5 seconds to google, is based on facts. They are more willing to back someone who suggests that wifi outputs a similar power to a microwave. I will save you the googling, one outputs 10000 times more power.

                • @jimmej: I’m surprised these lg neo chef models are allowed to be sold still. They all interfere with 2.4ghz indicating the shield design is defective.

                  • +1

@evasive: LOL! You really think LG is the only manufacturer of microwave ovens with this issue?
Have a read around on the forums. Other brands such as Panasonic, Sharp, Samsung all have the same problem.

                    • @DoctorCalculon: My panasonic microwave had my samsung tablet for testing purposes right above it while i microwaved popcorn and i was streaming a 4k video off you tube. Didn't even skip a beat.

For reference the router is just behind a wall beside an open walkthough passage to the kitchen where the microwave is.

Not saying this is not a problem. Just not for me.

                      • @xoom: I bought a Panasonic inverter microwave to avoid this exact LG problem. But it still happens and disconnects my wifi from my computer when it's on, so it definitely affects other microwave brands not just LG.

For reference the microwave does sit in the middle between the router and my computer though but I have ai mesh set up so it could technically connect to the other modem..

                • +2

@jimmej: I use mesh wifi instead of central heating. Love it!

Thanks for the link, although nothing on that site supports your claim, if anything it is even more unsupporting, in fact.

It states microwaves utilise a non-ionizing radiation, which it claims does not cause cancer. The Cancer Council also claims that the only non-ionizing radiation that can cause cancer is UV light.

Both sites claim the only radiation that causes cancer is ionizing radiation, like that found in x-ray machines.

It needs to be mentioned that the FDA have a reputation to be sellouts and validate the narrative of those that provide financial backing, so take their narrative with a grain of salt.

What info do you have that supports your opinion that radio waves that interfere with wifi is a health risk? So far, I have not been able to find any credible information on the internet.

    • Same - coffee reheat yes - monkey video no.

    • Oh so u only experience the 2.4g frequency issue when the microwave is in actual use/on

    • Doesn't that mean the microwaves are leaking out of your microwave… I would get a new one…

  • Any other deal on 25-30L microwave?

    • +3

      kmart

      • +1

Yep, had one of these…had problems and then got a kmart one for half the price which is just as good.

        • +1

I've had this lg microwave for 5 years. Still sweet. MIL has gone through 2 Kmart ones in the same time.

          apples and oranges

  • Does having an inverter make a noticable difference?

    • +2

I feel food is more evenly heated. And the noise is less jarring

      • +3

        Until the jingle kicks in

        • It's only a 3 second jingle

        • +2

haha yeah my LG dryer does this.

I'm guessing it's more annoying on a microwave, that's one of the reasons I went with panasonic

          • @andresampras: My folks samsung washing machine plays a jingle too. Not long till one of them plays a kpop song. Just saying.

        • You can turn it off

    • +1

Yes upgraded to this model for more even heating and while not perfectly even there’s definitely no more weird cold spots.

    • Just changed from an old aldi stirling model to this, it heats up food way quicker, like we are almost halving our heating up times. Granted the Aldi one is several years old at this point.. Also much more evenly heated and its much much quieter too.

  • +1

Great unit, just disconnects Bluetooth and WiFi 2.4 when using. Told my wife not use it when I'm on teams.

    • Great for when you need the kids to disconnect.

    • +1

Doesn't disconnect my Bluetooth completely while on teams, but apparently I "sound like a robot" according to my co-workers.

Another thing that I'm not a fan with is the lack of tactile buttons

Be aware that lots of people have reported that the magnetron dies in these. Had one myself and it died as well. Check ot the comments in this thread for more info.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/853010
No doubt it is a great microwave, but for me, they just do not last long enough to warrant purchasing another one.

    • +1

Mine started flaring flames before I shut it off… (for good)
Aside from that it’s had terrible interference with my Bluetooth (couldn’t use AirPods anywhere in the kitchen when using it) way more then my new Panasonic inverter which cooks food far more evenly and doesn’t have a carousel to clean.
Happy to have moved on from this.

    • +1

I would've thought not breaking would be a key criteria to be classified as a "great microwave".

      • Your standards are just too high. 😜

    • +1

      magnetron

      I read this as Megatron

    • Yep our magnetron died after 12 months. Thankfully got it repaired within an hour of taking it in. But if it keeps happening will request a full refund or just get a Sharp or Panasonic. It's a shame, they look nice and work really well; when they work.

  • This always has terrible reviews when it gets posted here

  • +1

Why does a product that seemingly has so many drawbacks have so many upvotes? 😭

    • It looks nice.

The Wifi interference seems to be due to the use of the inverter (not microwave leaks AFAIK), but the unreliability seems to be due to the design. Panasonic seem to have a better reputation for their inverter design.

  • +3

We have one… and have no issues related to the WiFi or Bluetooth.

There's this short 'song' that it plays when the countdown ends as opposed to loud beeps. It was kinda weird at first but now i like it, cuz it means my food is ready. I guess i've been Pavlov'd.

FYI you can turn off this sound. And also this microwave looks awesome, just so sleek.

    • I had one for 2 years with no issues either. I sold it to downsize to a different brand just because of space after a move and wish I had it back. My Panasonic is nowhere near as good.

  • +2

I've had two of these replaced under warranty in the past six months. Both magnetrons died.
It's been a month with the third replacement, and I'm already noticing that food doesn't heat up all the time. I wouldn't be surprised if this one fails as well. If it does, I won't bother with the warranty and will just get something else.
If you do decide to purchase, go with a reliable retailer that would be the least painful to deal with warranty issues.

    • I've no issues with mine, touch wood, my experience with LG microwaves in the past has been amazing, with our OG one lasting over 10 years, and hoping that this one also lasts at least 5 years.

Anyway I've had issues with a Breville microwave in the past. You should demand a full refund probably.

My experience with the Breville - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/830752

    • I bought this from TGG and after 7 or 8 months of use, I had to put more time to get it to the desired temperature. Sometimes it took twice as long, but not always. I took it to TGG to have it fixed. Three weeks later, they called me to pick it up and said there was no problem. So there is no reliable retailer. After that I bought a Sharp flatbed microwave and have had no problems ever since, very happy with it, the microwave popcorn is much better than the popcorn made by the LG microwave and it is very easy to clean too.

      • Yeah that's cool. I'm just saying we should like stand up for our Australian consumer rights. 8 months of use for a microwave is unacceptable in my opinion.

Anyway its $200 or $250 at the end of the day whatever that means to us individual consumers.

  • Mine failed after 5 years

It does say 10 year warranty on the magnetron - what do I do with that warranty?

    • Check with Ozb customer support

    • Only the parts are covered as far I know, if the internal surface is still good you could check the labour cost

  • Don't buy one, go Panasonic or Sharp.
I have the one in the link below and it is not very intuitive to use.
The magnetron died after 9 months and it took 2 months to get it back.
It is now making a 'scrambled' tune and the child lock automatically turns on, particularly after 10+ minute runs.
    https://www.lg.com/au/microwave-ovens/lg-MS4296OBS

    • Any specific model recommendation for the Panasonic? I have not seen a new model since 2020

I assume Sharp is now manufactured by Foxconn?
I got a good deal for a Sharp tv and refrigerator via TGG commercial and it works fine

  • would not recommend due to magnetron issue, mine also died after 18 months

  • Can confirm this kills wifi and the jingle is terrible.

    • +2

You can change the jingle but the way to set the clock is the most stupid thing about it IMO

      • I'll let the dude I yeeted it off to on MarketPlace know, cheers. Love my replacement Sharp.

  • +1

My dad microwaved a pair of button batteries in this for 5 minutes and neither he nor the machine died, seems sturdy.

  • +1

Also be aware that the interior finish is not durable so you need to ensure that theres no liquid pooling otherwise it will damage the finish and start rusting pretty quickly.

LG (same as others i can imagine) doesn't cover rust in the warranty.

Regretted buying this microwave to be honest.

  • I've had this for 10 months, it's a nice microwave. Unpopular opinion, I like the jingle, I often do like a little happy dance when it plays. It also means my food is ready, so might be a Pavlovian response.

  • Ditto to basically everything above, been rocking this thing for about four-ish years now, had the same one one for a year or so before that which died. Doesn't play nice with 2.4ghz wifi depending on placement. Seems to heat food like it's supposed to. Jingle good, lack of tactile buttons bad. Won't get another one if I can help it but the price was right for the limited selection at my local HN last time…

  • +1

Seeing alot of negative reviews on the LG, alot of people are recommending Panasonic microwaves. Any in particular? if so, any deals currently out? cheers

    • Just get a Panasonic one, this one just look nicer.

  • Ive never been a huge supporter of LG before though I can say I've had this model since 2019 and it works an absolute delight. Seems well constructed and easy to use with nice even heat

Highly recommend and unsure of why all the negative comments

    • Have the same model, it has a fire risk, looking for a new one

  • I have a Sharp microwave and I can’t even remember how old it is now. Mostly 11+ years old. Still going great!

    • My sharp just started throwing out sparks after 3 yrs and on the look for a new one now. Every brand seems to have some that last long and some that dont.
